By far and away Operation Mindcrime! I like Images and Words but don't think it holds up as well 20+ years down the road. Of course Operation Mindcrime is essentially my one "desert island" cd so I might be a bit biased.
I have to agree. While I am not a huge Queensryche fan this album is a timeless clasic. I have it on vinyl and actually played it sometime over the winter.
Images and Words. When Mindcrime came out, I was completely bummed by it's whimpyness. They were great on that tour opening for and blowing away Metallica, but I never got into the album. It didn't hold a candle (or take hold the flame) of their earlier works. A few years ago I rebought it on CD to give it another chance as time has made me appreciate a lot of albums that I didn't back in those days. Time didn't help this one for me.
Images and Words is pretty whimpy too, but it was expected to be so. I prefer their debut to this one, but, like now, being asked which one I prefer, definitely Images and Words. Saw the tour and they were quite the bore.
I go with Images and Words. I just didn't care for Mindcrime. A friend raved about it, but I just couldn't get into it. I should revisit it though. Its been a long time and I should give it another chance.

Gotta go Queensryche. Way more legendary
ReplyDeleteDream Theater. Images and words has aged much better than Mindcrime. I can't even listen to Mindcrime anymore.

ReplyDeleteBut for now ... Dream Theater
My first thought when I saw this was, "Mark put this one together just to get me to pick Dream Theater." Well, it worked.
