What are the chances?

I have tried to avoid talking about Axl Rose for most of the summer, but I am still wondering about the "album". Axl and his band have toured Europe and even though there have been several "incidents", they pretty much made it through alright. He says there will be more tour dates in the U.S. coming soon. Yet there is still no release date set for Chinese Democracy. So are the chances of this album being released any better know than they were earlier in the year? Or do you think he just did a tour to keep his name in the news and has no intention of ever releasing an album?

  1. I agree with Ben that he's kind of a joke now, but I think that the album will make it out eventually. At this point, I'm not sure if I'd even care.

  2. I agree. I used to be a huge GnR fan, but I wouldn't ever buy the album, if it did come out. How can he be taken seriously anymore after 10 years of promoting the same album without it being released?

I think it will evenually come out. I think that he's afraid of the negative press that will ensue. It's been so long that critics seem to be lining up to tear it apart. In all fairness, nothing can live up to that sort of hype.

  4. Back in late spring just prior to starting this tour, I think Axl said the album would be out in late fall. They completed the tour in decent fashion by Axl standards. Yet now late fall is not far away and no release date has been set. The people at Geffen have to way past being mad at him for the amount of time and money they have probably sunk into this project. The critics would be all over it if it came out, but that's the way it is. We they began the tour and things went okay, I really thought it might come out this year, but now I just don't know.

It's sad, really. G&R was so huge back in the day. I remember waiting outside Record Bar for the 12:01 release of Use Your Illusion and hainging out with a whole bunch of fellow metal heads and being so exited.

No matter what comes out or when, it won't really be a G&R album. It will be some kind of strange Axl solo album. I think I read somewhere that this was the most expensive album ever.

  6. It's a shame really. When Appetite came out it was so great and just a welcome change from a lot of the stale hard rock that was coming out. Then the Use your illusions albums were big despite the shift to grunge. These guys were one of the few hard rock bands to survive the grunge movement. Yet they had internal problems and now it's just Axl and he doesn't seem in any hurry to do much of anything.

  7. I agree with Mike - wouldn't get it even when it does come out, their public will get sick of them jerking its chain eventually.

The problem with rock bands is that, with the exeption of the Rolling Stones still rocking in their senior years, the members look better unwrinkled and spritely. Axl Rose is past his prime and maybe he knows it but just won't admit to it.

At this point, I really could care less. Axl's been a non-entity to me for a very long time.

  11. Axl Grease is a total waste. I lost all respect for him when he was at that basketball game when he was supposed to be onstage performing. Chinese Democracy will never see the light of day, not with him alive, anyway. It'll surface after his death, whenever that is...or maybe it'll be like Brian Wilson's "Smile," redone and released officially when Axl gets over himself.

  12. Well I'm am so sick of hearing about Axl rose, and I as well tried to avoid posting about him on my blog. I remember when a few songs from "Chinese Democracy" leaked I actually thought, WOW, this is really going to happen. But instead as time goes on I found that it's just as bogus as it was ten years ago. I probably wouln't buy it regardless.

GNR has 2 good albums: Appetite For Destruction and all the good songs from Use Your Illusion 1 & 2 on one disc. The rest was all filler or covers.

I like GNR just as much as the next fan but the band is not as legendary as the hype machine makes them out to be. 3 studio albums, 2 with a ton of filler, does not a legend make. Sure, they were great live but that went downhill fast.

I saw the last U.S. tour and it was good but nothing like classic GNR circa 1987 opening for Aerosmith. Axl seems to tour when he feels like it, makes some bucks, and gets the back catalog selling again. Will Chinese Democracy come out? Probably not. I hope it does.....it will either be a work of genius or the biggest flop of all-time.
