This week I am reviewing two movies that have record stores in them. Empire Records is almost entirely set in a record store and High Fidelity has a number of scenes in a record store. So I have two questions for you.
The first is are there any other movies that you can think of with record stores in them, even if it's just one scene. Do you know of any?
The other is what is the coolest record store in a movie?
Unfortunately the only other record store that's coming to my mind right now is the one that is breifly in the terrible "Pretty in pink". The one where Annie Potts works and everyone that comes there dresses like they are in UB40.
ReplyDeleteI probably like the store in High Fiedlity the best because it reminds me more of record stores I have gone to. Empire Records is cool too, but it just doesn't look enough like a real record store to me.
I believe Reality Bites has a record store scene, no?
ReplyDeleteSPINAL TAP! There's the great scene in the record store where Artie Fufkin (Paul Shaffer), the label's promotions rep, sets up the autograph session (in South Bend, Indiana, I think) where nobody shows up.
ReplyDeleteI can still see him bending over and telling the band members to "kick my ass" because it's such a disaster.

Mike-I have not seen Reality Bites.
ReplyDeleteDavid-I forgot about that, but it doesn't seem like you get to see a lot of the store.
I am surprised Wayne's World never had a record store scene. They went to concerts, a radio station and a guitar store, but no record store.
The record store in High Fidelity is easily coolest, but a second would have to be the one Rory and Jess visit in NYC on "Gilmore Girls"
ReplyDeleteIf you watch closely during the record store scenes in Pretty In Pink, you can see Alcatrazz - No Parole From Rock'n Roll on vinyl in the foreground. I believe it's when Blaine (Andrew McCarthy) is browsing while waiting for Molly ringwald. His bud (played by James Spader) comes in to bust his chops and you see the album.
ReplyDeleteYes, I have no life!
reel fanatic-I have never watched Gilmore Girls.
ReplyDeleteSteve-I noticed that as well.
The Kevin Smith movie, Chasing Amy had some scenes in an independent record store.
ReplyDeleteFred- I have not seen that either.
ReplyDeleteSorry, I'm a sucker for Pretty in Pink and that was what leapt to my mind with this question. Empire Records was good but not great. Chasing Amy does indeed have a record store in it. Or how about a front of a record store in Fast Times at Ridgemont High when Demone is schooling Rat on the fine art of the pickup using the cardboard standup of Debbie Harry? There's actually a lot of movies with record store scenes if we really try to hammer this one out...
ReplyDeleteThe Spanish movie EL DIA DE LA BESTIA have an increible record store in the movie. Pure metal/hc/death/thrash. Very cool. I think you can get the movie outside spain too. Their is lots of metal in that movie. Check it out metal fanatics!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeletethere is a cool scene in the movie "girl" that is set in a record store its a very cool movie
ReplyDeleteSome additional movies with record store scenes:
ReplyDeleteRecord City (1978)
Half Baked (1998)
Fast Times At Ridgemont High (1982) has one in a mall
some others I looked up but never seen:
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (2010)
Reign Over Me (2007)
Haggard (2003)
A Clockwork Orange (1971)
500 Days Of Summer (2009)
Record Store (2008) short
anonymous-Thanks for adding to the list. It seems like the one in Fast Times is just in front of the store with the Blondie stand-up, but you never really see much in the store. I like older films that show any kind of store-record, grocery whatever because it's like a time capsule of what it was like back that. Being old like I am it's cool to jar those old memories I had of stores back then as well.
