Battle of the bands

I decided to do battle of the bands early this month to make way for Halloween related topics towards the end of the month. This one may not get a lot of votes but here it is. Just pick the band you prefer and state why. So it's:

Anthrax vs. Megadeth

I will pick Anthrax as I think they had more great albums and fewer clunkers. I don't like how they treated their singers in their last two vocalist changes, but I still think they have been more consistent and I listen to their music far more often.

So who do you pick?

I know all I need(or want) to know about Mustaine and Megadeth, so I choose Anthrax.

Hi Mark, Just wanted to say hello, I like your blog even though I am not heavy metal enough to comment often.

I like whichever of these bands you like best :)

Anthrax was my first heavy metal band, so it'll have to be them.

  4. You may have a good point about Anthrax being more consistent, but I would pick Megadeth because I still believe they have done 2 of the most important Metal albums of all time.
    So Megadeth for me.

Tough one. Both of these bands have annoyed me to the point where I don't even bother with them anymore. Between Megadeth having "satanic" bands booted from bills they are playing on to Anthrax dumping John Bush to do the Vegas thing.

Looking at the music, I would probably say that Megadeth's music puts them over the top. Anthrax were to jokey in the 80s. And while I love the John Bush stuff, it still doesn't hold up against early Megadeth.

  6. I will pick Megadeath as Mustaines voice can send shivers down the spine. I have always wondered how Metallica would have sounded on many of their albums if Mustaine would have stayed with them.

  7. I've never been a huge fan of either. But three factors lead me to give the nod to Anthrax:

    1. The band has not been afraid to try different things.
    2. Scott Ian is one of the funniest metalheads around.
    3. Dave Mustaine rarely fails to whine.

I pulled every album from both bands and compared.....very close.

I think I'd have to go with Megadeth. It's hard to beat RUST IN PEACE. I'll say this, Anthrax have put out some great material with John Bush, very strong stuff. I'm disappointed they copied KISS and went "reunion". But that could mean we get more Armored Saint.

    Megadeth......

  10. I think that brings it to Anthrax leading 6-5. There has never been a tie at battle of the bands and the closest margin a battle finished with was 2 votes.

Next month will be the last Battle of the bands. In December I will go into my archives and post the results from all of the battle of the bands that took place during the year. In January I will replace it with "Heavy Metal Jukebox". I will more details on that in December.

  11. Wowzers, what a tough one, Mark! Given how much I love Joey and enjoyed chatting with Frank and Scott, and also how much I'm enamored to Spreading the Disease, Persistence of Time and Among the Living, I am going to have to go with Megadeth. After all, I was looney enough to "scientifically" find a way that Peace Sells beat Master of Puppets.

Peace Sells and Rust are definitely two of the greatest metal albums of all-time, plus I've been spending some time with Youthanasia and Cryptic Writings.

I would agree that Anthrax has been far more consistent than Megadeth, but when Megadeth is on, holy smokes....

  12. Anthrax in their prime still holds up. I can get out Spreading the Disease or Among the Living and I don't have to pretend it's 20 years ago to enjoy them. As a live band, I think they tend to focus on reliving the past, but they don't have to. Even the best best Megadeth albums struggle to hold up today. Peace Sells is hard to listen to now. The only other contender for greatness is Rust in Peace. It holds up better, but still not as well as Anthrax. So I vote for Anthrax!

I do have respect for Mustaine not being willing to play with "satanic" bands. It's a tough stand in his genre and he's willing to take the hit for what he belives. besides, I can't stand all that devil stuff either. Everyone can stick their devil horns up their asses.

  13. Anthrax, but it is VERY close. For me, it came to comparing each band's best work (Among The Living and Rust In Peace). I think Among the Living gets my vote for Anthrax.
