I think that I wrote on this topic last year, but not many people were reading it back then and I decided to rate a few songs.
AC/DC-Mistress for Christmas(1990)
Just another average song off of Razor's edge. Someone must have said "hey, Mistress rhymes with Christmas so let's write a song called that because it sounds kind of dirty". I seem to remember t-shirts of this with Angus holding a big bag with a woman's legs sticking out of it.
Venom-Black Christmas(1987)
An alright song from Venom, but just another their typical negative semi-satanic dribble as far as lyrics.
King Diamond-No presents for Christmas(1985)
This single was the first thing the King did after going solo. It's a good song, but a bit of a downer as far as jolly Christmas songs go.
220 Volt-Heavy Christmas(198?)
Probably the best metal Christmas song I know of as far as music and message. I assume they mean heavy as in heavy metal rather than "oh, that fruitcake made me feel heavy".
***What Christmas metal songs do you know of and what do you like?
I've only heard the AC/DC song.
ReplyDeleteQueen - Thank God It's Christmas
Jon Bon Jovi's done a couple I think.
Linkin Park - My December
Spinal Tap - Christmas With The Devil
I'm doing a holiday song meme now...I put AC/DC on it and don't forget Trans-Siberian Orchastra...If you really like "christmas music"!
ReplyDeleteI have not heard 220 Volt, but I do know AC/DC's, which is really quite lifeless.
ReplyDeleteI have yet to hear a good metal Christmas song, even though the new Twisted Sister one is kind of catchy.

I repeat ... Check out A Brutal christmas for some extreme metal renditions of the classics. Everything from thrash to Black/Death metal it's fantastic!
ReplyDeleteI also have a sickenly brutal cover of "Jingle Bells" that is great, but I don't know who it's by. One hell of a death metal tune.
I think Twisted Sister just put out a Chrismas album which scares me. Also it isn't metal but The Kinks Father Christmas is a great christmas song.
ReplyDeleteI don't really know any rockin' christmas songs, so to speak, other than I.Am.Santa.Claus. (instead of Iron Man) from a few years ago, which I found to be amusing for a while. And then there's that Billy Squier one, but I doubt it falls into your category. :)
ReplyDeleteI listened to some of Twisted Christmas and it's kinda funny, but in a way that I suspect would wear off on the second listen.
ReplyDeleteA much better new Christmas album (although maybe not of much interest here) is Bootsy Collins' Chistmas is 4 Ever. Bootsy brings the crazy funk as usual, but with his own brand of holiday spirit. it's completely bananas.
These aren't metal, but several good rock (or pop) Christmas songs are "Father Christmas" by the Kinks, "Christmas in Hollis" by Run-DMC and "Christmastime" by Blues Traveller.
Trans-Siberian Orchestra is one thing that makes me glad when Christmas is over! It never ceases to amaze me how incredibly talented musicians can even more incredibly bad music.
There is one Christmas CD out there called a Very Hairy Christmas or something like that, that has a bunch of 80's big hair bands doing X-mas songs. It is hard to find, and I hear its ok.
