Originally I was only going to show one cover, but I decided to show two because they are very similar. Both done around the same time, both depict bands on big vehicles, both are LA bands and actually both were originally released by Enigma records. So first here is Stryper's 1985 album Soldiers under command.
Next is Lizzy Borden's 1986 release Menace to society.
Do you like either album cover or both, dislike them or just think they are okay?
Both are just OK. I don't mind the band-on-the-vehicle motif, they're just a bit dull.

Stryper's poses make me think they were watching too much Miami Vice. Lizzy Borden have more of a pro-wrestling look on their cover. I prefer the Lizzy Borden one due to the bright background and using an angle. It looks they are coming towards you instead of just standing there like Stryper.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty forgiving of stuff which is obviously just a product of its time. I can't condone that crap though. I understand the whole machismo vein that ran through metal (brilliantly juxtaposed with lipstick and gay leather), but there's something terribly "dumb-jock" and uncreative about these. I hear Moose's voice from the Archie comics saying, "Duh, I know. We could get a car and like pose in front of it or something." If these were done today, in spoof of such mid 80's crap, I'd like it. Otherwise, flush it down the toilet where it belongs.
ReplyDeletethis cracked me up how you paired them off together...I think both are cheesy as hell, but Lizzy's cover is more what 80s metal was about, cheesy or not
ReplyDeleteI hate them both...but I'd forgotten about the ridiculousness of the Stryper cover. Even their little car is yellow and black! Ha!

I think they are both terrible :\
ReplyDeleteI think most of you might just be jealous that you don't have a bumble bee car like Stryper.
ReplyDeleteI don't like band shots on covers - it is a waste of space of what could have been a good drawing...
ReplyDeleteBoth feel dated, but they're not too bad. I like Stryper sticking to a colour scheme, but it's fairly dark and hard to see. Lizzy Bordens is not as posed and brighter. And the glam and tank look is exciting!
ReplyDeleteI like Lizzy's cover better.
You have to love the Bumblebee outfits of Stryper.
ReplyDeleteThey are not that good and not that bad. I agree, they are just ok. Although, I do think that Lizzy Borden's band logo is pretty cool!
