***So which one do you choose?
I have to go with KISS - 'Unholy' and not because I am a huge KISS fan. I thought HOT IN THE SHADE sucked and I didn't like the 2 new tunes on SMASHES, THRASHES, & HITS. When the boys did REVENGE, they got back to hard, mean Rock'n'Roll. 'Unholy' was Gene's best song in 10 years, you have to go back to '82 and CREATURES OF THE NIGHT for really good Gene tunes.
ReplyDeleteClose runner-up is Dream Theater. 'Pull Me Under' stills gets a lot of play here in RI/MA area. I remember thinking that Dream Theater was going to be the next huge band.
"Pull Me Under" was listenable (unusual for Dream Theatre in my book), but not particularly good. Pantera was always terrible. I never understood the hype around them. I guess that leaves "Unholy" to win by sucking less than the others!

ReplyDeleteDon't really know the other 2 songs but Pantera's Walk seriously kicked ass back then. The album it was on was their last listenable album for me, they seemed to go off track afterwards with Beyond Driven.

ReplyDeleteI love DT, but "Pull Me Under" is one of my least favorites. I have to consider it, though, because of the kick it gave to progessive metal.
"Walk" is probably Pantera's most approachable song, popular even with non-Pantera fans. A good, simple riff that still is great to play while running.
That all said, "Unholy" wins. As RIR points out, it brought KISS back from their late 80s crap and was good to show that not all the 80s bands (which I see KISS as for the purposes of this discussion) were void of substance.

Yeah, it's like I dig DT and I used to like "Walk" a lot, but given the choices, I'm not in the mood, so I too would go with "Unholy"
ReplyDeleteI'm going to go with Unholy for this one. The last KISS song I had paid attention to was Lick It Up, the time in between was pretty dismal, but then Unholy came out and redeemed them for such songs as "Let's Put The X into Sex"...

Unholy is a cool track too.

ReplyDeleteEven though I was an actual member of the KISS Army back in the day, I'm going to go with Pantera here. Simply put, I like the song.
ReplyDeleteGotta go with "Pull Me Under." This was the only Dream Theater song that MTV paid any attention to, and even at that it was only a little. Still it was just enough to launch what has been quite an illustrious career that continued on virtually without any MTV or radio at all. Really a remarkable band from all angles.
