I used to do a lot of lists here on my blog and I once did my top ten bands probably over a year ago. I thought that it was high time that I set down and grind out my current top 25 bands. Now when I say current I mean as of right not because it could very well change some next week. Here are my top 25 favorite hard rock/metal bands for what it's worth.

  1. We share the same #1 band. Nice to see Lizzy Borden and Pentagram on the list.

  2. If we're talking metal, I agree about #1 as well. What I can't figure out is the stinker at #16.

  3. Seeing Armored Saint in the top ten warms my darkened heart!

And Motorhead in the top five?!?!? Freaking great!

  4. Sean-Thanks.

    Bob-I knew that was coming.

Pope-I have long been a fan of Armored Saint.

  5. I will say there are several in there that wouldn't be in my top 1000. :|

I'll not mention them as I don't want Bob calling me deaf.

  6. If AC/DC is one of them I think it will dispel my deafness theory!

  7. While not one of my faves, I do enjoy the Bon Scott era. brian Johnson makes me want to saw off my own feet.

  8. Sean-At least Hanoi Rocks and Cinderella are on your top bands list I am sure. I agree with you about Brian Johnson though.

  9. I think I have to come up with a new theory about why you don't like Zep. Anyone driven to want to saw off his own feet when he hears Brian Johnson can't be deaf. Well, he is pretty ugly though. So, is it the sound or sight of him that causes the sawing compulsion?

  10. Both Johnson's and Plant's voices annoy me. Johnson looks like he's trying to pinch one out. he should join a band with Robert Trujillo. i'll have to post my faves soon...on my awesome blog. ha

  11. Hanoi Rocks? blech! I like Cinderella now but detested them back when they came out. seeing them live a few times over the last few years was impressive, except for Kiefer's speach impediment.

  12. Hanoi Rocks are brilliant, but each to his own.

  13. I neither like nor dislike them actually, just wanted to razz you.

  14. Sean-Oh, you need to get your top 25 list done so we can all check it out.

  15. you're not the boss of me! :)

  16. Nope, but I can hope for the list.

  17. it's up but it's not right. i could interchange several very easily.

  18. You wouldn't want a boss named Metal Mark?

  19. not one that listens to hendrix, zeppelin, hanoi rocks and gnr!

    *ducks*

  20. Sean-How can you not like Hendrix yet put Yngwie Mamlsteen in your 25 list? Without Hendrix rock guitar would not be the same. Then again without Yngwie Malmsteen there wouldn't be any 1980's overdone, self-gratifying, posing virtuoso wannabe's to make fun of.

  21. when i hear hendrix, i hear the blues. i don't like the blues. yes, i realize most rock/metal is blues based, but i don't like jimi. sure, pioneer, blah blah blah. so were elvis and the beatles but i don't want to listen to them either. i can't listen to stevie ray either. blech.

now, the stones are my #2 band of all time and are practically a white boy blues band...but it's different...it's the stones. :)

  22. Sean-Hendrix did so much, so easily in a very short amount of time.

  23. But Hendrix wasn't just the blues like SRV. There was that wild psych element. There was jazz. Sure, "Purple Haze" hasn't stood up well, because it's not a good song and the shock has worn off over the years, but stuff like "Burning of the Midnight Lamp" and "Castles made of Sand" show how expansive and visionary he was. To blow him off as just a blues player is short-sighted.

The Stones are the most overrated band in rock history, bar none (not even AC/DC or Eric Crapton). Sure they have a few great songs ("Sympathy," "Gimme Shelter," "Play With Fire"), but 98% of their even half decent material occurred over 35 years ago. Since then, they've just become a facsimile of themselves, a Stones cover band really. They're more famous for being oversexed and overdrugged morons than they are for great songs. I mean, their best known song, "Satisfaction," is only a riff. There's not even a real song around it. It's on par with the Human League's "Don't You Want Me." Same concept, only with synths instead of guitars.

  24. SRV was more than just blues too. But I don't like his style. I have heard all of hendrix's catalogue several times over. I don't like it. I also don't care how important or influential he was. Respect it? Sure. But that doesn't mean I should like it. I'm not saying Hendrix was a bad player, I'm saying I don't like his style.

I'm glad you guys like him. I just don't.

Who cares if the Stones are overrated and in general not that good of a band, especially live? Should I stop being a fan?

You're allowed your opinions, I'm allowed mine.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Of course you are allowed your opinions. We can respect opinions yet still disagree and debate them at the same time. At least I know that I do that.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I disagree about SRV. He was a very, very good blues player, but I never hear anything that really stretches beyond that. SRV just does it very well. Even so, I don't enjoy him either.

No one said you had to like Hendrix. You're in good company, because no less than Rick Rubin doesn't like him either. But your opinion is different than saying he's just a blues player, which isn't true. He's a lot more.

As far as the Stones go, you are entitled to like whomever you want, but that doesn't make them good. The idea that what music is good is just opinion is as crazy as suggesting you aren't entitled to like music that isn't good. While our perception of what is really good (or any other absolute truth) is usually quite flawed, dismissing attempts to discern that truth is just lazy. I love msuic and it is important to me to figure out the truths about it and I have found that it is worth the effort and enhanced my appreciation for music immensely.

I don't like the Stones, because the truth is they aren't good and their reputation as a great band lies on received opinion. I don't want to be so lazy as to just accept that. They're a bar band without the charm of a bar band. Why should I ignore that truth and accept the "opinion" that they're really great? I'm not talking about intolerance of your taste. It's okay to like bad music and there are good reasons even to do so (like songs that have personal meaning to you because of some confluence of events in your life or something). But liking it doesn't make it good.

  27. "It's okay to like bad music" - one of the most retarded statements i have ever read.

and nowhere did i say hendrix was "just blues". i said when i hear him, i hear the blues. he could rise from the dead and start playing Breaking the Law and i would still hear the blues.

    oh well. i'm over it.

    ReplyDelete
  28. If it's not okay to like bad music, why do you like the Stones? You have like five Paula Abdul records. It's fine that you like it. I'm just saying that doesn't make it good.

If you don't hear blues in like 90% of rock music, I think I might have go back to my original theory. Wasn't there a bunch of Whitesnake in your collection? What else is there to Whitesnake other than blues? Well, there is suck, so it's really just blues and suck. Hendrix was blues and psych and jazz and funk and folk and just wild abandon. And no suck (except perhaps "Purple Haze").

  29. Hey, you guys are sure helping my hit count. Thanks.

Do you know about Virgin Steele and Jag Panzer?

If you're into WASP and Maiden, you should love some of their albums.
