Tonk-Sister Switchblade

Photobucket
2007

Australia's Tonk strike me as a band who know a lot of the basics concerning hooks, rhythm and other mandatory elements. The also manage to use volume to their advantage as they crank it up and are never subtle. The end results sound like a mixture of AC/DC, 80's KISS, Zodiac Mindwarp and others. When the songs work it's like come at you with quick, but weighty punches as they hit at you with brief yet definite chops. They get points for their energy level, but where they fall short is in the creativity department. This is basic hard rock, but you still have to come to the table with enough ideas or something to sustain the songs for the duration of it's run. There were too many times where this band would begin track in decent fashion, but then they would run into a wall. The results were usually some parts that just kind sat there riding out the length of the song. The results of that were that my attention was quickly drifting elsewhere and my pointer finger was getting itchy to go and press the fast forward button to relieve me of the dull moment. Now the album is more good than not, there are some obvious gaps that really need to be filled before this band can move beyond just being a decent act.

I WANT THE BAND BATTLEFIELDS FROM FARGO TO DIE. EVERYONE HATES THEM SO WHY DO THEY DO IT? I NEVER SEE A GOOD REVIEW. THEY ARE NOT GOOD IN ANY SENSE WHAT SO EVER. I SAW THEM LIVE AND EVERYONE LEFT AS THEY PLAYED. THEY ARE RUINING MUSIC ALL TOGETHER.

  2. anonymous-I don't know what Battlefields has to do with Tonk or why your comment is all in caps. If this is the same Battlefields that just released "Thresholds of imbalance" then I certainly like what I have heard of that album and don't understand your hostility towards them.

  3. Weird that you didn't like this. All Access mag in LA loved it. See below. Disappointed Tonk fan Sydney.

You very rarely hear it anymore, an album that grabs you from the start and doesn't let you go. Listen up mates, 'Sister Switchblade' the debut release from Australia's Tonk is one such album. Bred on a healthy dose of Rose Tattoo, The Angels and AC/DC, these boys from Canberra, know how to rock and these boys rock HARD!! Riff upon riff, Tonk build upon their Aussie hard rock heritage and bring it screaming and stomping into the modern age! The band is fueled and powered by, Jinks on vocals, Steve Gray on guitar and vocals, Wayne Withers on guitars, Michael Rosser on bass and vocals with Tristian Davies bringing the thunder on drums. Not only will their music grab you by the throat it will put you in a stranglehold. 'Sister Switchblade' is exhausting, I mean that in the best way possible. It's brimming with swagger and raw energy. By the time it's over, you will have burned as many calories as if you would have run a marathon. After rocking out to tracks like, "Redback", "Libertine," " Ménage A Trios" and "Needle In The Red", you will understand where I'm coming from. The bottom line, this is good stuff, people. These boys come at you like a freight train. Pure hard rock fury! Period. ATTITUDE, POWER & PASSION, Tonk are the genuine article. I highly recommend this album to anyone who wants to be blown away by balls to the wall in your face rock and roll! I for one can't wait to hear what Tonk come up with next.

    Highly Recommended
