It's time for another round of battle of the bands. Two classic style metal bands are up in this contest. Both have made their contributions and both have had a few clunkers. It is...
It boils down to Accept for me, they have more of that straight up classic heavy metal sound happening with them, basically like a German Priest. Where as Saxon leans a little bluesier, but still very good and underrated in a more AC/DC like way. Both classic bands in their own right.
Now Metal Mark, bring on the main event, Judas Priest vs Iron Maiden!!!
Metalfan75-I remember one of the very first metal mags I ever read was a Hit Parader in late 84 or early 85. It had Iron Maiden vs. Judas Priest on the cover. At the time I thought that was seriously like heavyweight match-up of metal and at that point it may have been. However things have changed since then and it's not a close contest anymore. If you look at my site then you know which band I lean towards. Now those two bands will appear in future Battle of the bands segments, but not against each other. I have what I think are more appropriate contenders for each.
Now for this match-up I go with Accept too. It's fairly close and Saxon have some good albums in recent years too. However Accept's output from about 1981-1985 is stronger than Saxon's best work.
Metal Mark-If I read you right, I think we both agree Priest dropped the ball when they went glam on Turbo. But in context of material up to Defenders, I think they stood up pretty well to Maiden. But yeah, by 86 its pretty clear it was Iron Maiden who pulled ahead with their own artistic direction. Actually 80's Metallica vs 80's Iron Maiden would be a fairer match up musically, but you have your own ideas.
I'm going with Accept mainly based off the fact that Metal Heart is still one of my favorite albums of the 80's. I always regarded Saxon as overrated. I respect their contribution but it was hit or miss on their early stuff on whether I liked them or not. Interestingly enough I actually enjoy some of Saxon's more recent works better.
Restless & Wild is one of my all time favorite metal tapes, but Saxon have more tapes that I like than Accept. The first few Accept tapes are pretty spotty. I like Balls To The Wall but was never in love with it and don't know any of the tapes after that.
So for Wheels of Steel, Strong Arm Of the Law, Denim & Leather and The Eagle Has Landed I will go with Saxon.
I have to go with Saxon. I can name several classic Saxon cuts off the top of my head (Wheels of Steel, Denim and Leather, Dallas 1P.M., Crusader)but Accept (Balls to the Wall, uhhhhh...London Leatherboys) it's a little harder. I guess Saxon is more "commercial" than Accept. It's kind of like trying to answer which is you favorite sexual position. They all have their plusses and minuses.
Accept. First of all, they have the most "metal" names. "Udo Dirkschneider"?!?! That wins right there! Wasn't there a guy named wolf in there too? Restless and Wild STILL kicks ass. That and Udo is like the Patton Oswalt of metal. And, the "Balls to the wall" video is perfect in it's weird blend of cheese, confusion, homoeroticism, and pure awesomness. And Camo.
I'm going with ACCEPT. The "Restless And Wild" album just resonated unearthly Metal vibes with me when I was a young lad. That ACCEPT album picked me up, threw me against the wall... and I wanted more!!
Saxon I have and always will like tremendously, however, a Metal choice was asked from you. "Denim and Leather" is unreal great.
Much as I love Udo and the boys, I'm with Saxon on this. Their first few albums remain utter classics--Dallas 1 p.m. is an incredible riff assault--and though they lost the plot in the late 80s, their more recent albums have been superb.
Two of my favorite bands! What a tough call! I'd have to say Accept just because of power of their 4 albums Restless & Wild through Russian Roulette. Love Saxon and agree they have improved since the 90's. Metal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ReplyDeleteAnother toughie.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to go with Saxon, largely on the basis of The Inner Sanctum.
