Megadeth vs. Metallica

Remember the slight few "feud" between these two bands many years ago? The metal mags of the day were all too happy to print anything they thought might sell copies. Mustaine's time in Metallica has always connected these two acts despits the fact that hist ime in Metallica was relatively brief and a long time ago. Still today's battle is...

Metallica

Both have had ups and downs. They both contributed greatly to the early thrash scene, but both acts went for sounds that were much lighter by the 1990's. Megadeth have gone through numerous line-up changes and Metallica have gone through several changes in musical direction.

***Which do you choose and why?

Overall I'll take Megadeth. While Ride the Lightning is a masterpiece, I never got too into Kill 'em All and Master of Puppets. When Justice happened, I was out. I despise that album and everything they have done since.

Megadeth's first 3 are great with the first 2 being the best. I didn't care for Rust In Piece when it came out but can tolerate it now. Marty's playing never really impressed me except on his Dragon's Kiss album. I avoided them through the 90s completely. It was boring stuff. Their last 3 albums have been great, a wonderful comeback.

  2. As much as it pains me, I have to pick Metallica. The first three albums were far better than anything Megadeth did. Of course, Megadeth never made an album as bad as St Anger either. Still, the strength of the first three Metallica albums is hard to argue with.

  3. Prior to the last decade it would have easily been Metallica. It's gotten due to Megadeth adding on a couple of decent discs while Metallica released a turd and an average album. Still, those first three Metallica discs are hard to argue against. For Megadeth Rust in piece is their top album, but it and Peace sells fall below Ride the lightning and Master of puppets.

Megadeth have been slightly more consistant, but they have never reached the heights that Metallica did early on. So yeah it's Metallica for me.

Sean-I think Peace sells is very good and Killing is my business is solid despite poor production. However So far so good so what has it's problems. That being that almost half the album sucks.

I agree about So Far...it's got some goofy shit on it, but I'll listen to it before Kill Em All (most influential album ever maybe?) and master of puppets.

  5. I'd have to say, overall, if I look at their entire discography, I'm going with Megadeth.
The only Metallica I thought was brilliant was "Ride the Lightning."
Yes, it's a classic, but can I really pit one classic against an entire career of quality? Nope, I can't... thus I pick Megadeth.

Man, this is semi-tough. O.k., since Megadeth didn't "Load" and then "Reload" with "Some Kind Of Monster" near "St. Anger" with "One"... I'll go with Megadeth any day of the year. Plus Mustaine has been darn consistent over the years too. I always admired Bob Seger, the "Turn The Page" cover by Metallica was too artificial and forced for me.

I do incredibly admire Metallica and have unreal memories of seeing them live, the first 3 albums being my favorites too. Still... it all began with "One" and I will never forget how shocked I felt when I first heard that song.

    Do I have to choose?

They both have masterpieces that I had on vinyl and cassette back in the '80s...and on my I-pod even now.

But then there's St. Anger and The World Needs A Hero.
    I regret buying both.

For myself Metallica released probably the two best metal discs ever on the North American continent with Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. Then the 90s came with unprecidented commercial heights as music directions radically changed and quality fell, bottoming out with St. Anger in 2003. If one band ever had the best and worst albums of any genre, it would have to be Metallica IMO.

Megadeth have remained more consistent through the years, though never quite reaching the stratospheric highs or paltry lows of Metallica. But as things stand in 2010 I think Megadeth are the better band, with my preference of Endgame over Death Magnetic being the decisive factor.

  9. Metallica, simply for Kill Em All and Garage Days Revisited (on blue vinyl).

  10. Blue vinyl might be the only thing that can save Garage Days...

    no doubt here: Megadeth!
Marty Friedman is a great guitarist (I love Cacophony!!!) and Rust in Piece is a great masterpiece!
Metallica are good, but Megadeth are simply the best in thrash metal!
