As far as being a metalhead- Sabbath is all that is metal. Although for actual overall band sound/song quality, I have to go with the Led. 50/50 in my book
I have been stukc on this decsion for days. Zeppelin's upside was their diversity and the fact that they were so good at different styles. They were fairly consistant with the last two albums being the only shaky releases. Sabbath may have been more original as far as just with the run from 70-75 and their influence on just metal is stronger. I like the Dio era of Sabbath, but the last two with Ozzy and almost everything after Live Evil is average or worse. So that drags them down although many fans will say the period from 86-95 wasn't really Sabbath anyhow. In thinking of total career and impact on all of music not just metal I'll take Zeppelin.
Counting both the Ozzy era and Ronnie James Dio era Sabbath... my pick is Black Sabbath. Plus, I am a HUGE admirer of Ian Gillan and "Born Again" is an enormous Sabbath album for my ears.
And... "Cross Purposes", "The Headless Cross" and "Seventh Star" are three underrated and under-appreciated Black Sabbath albums.
Tony Martin was a great vocalist for Black Sabbath, IMO. Glenn Hughes is a living legend and on "Seventh Star" he shined... IMO.
Yes, the band lineup may not have been original... still, those albums will always say Black Sabbath on 'em!
@metalodyssey - you liked Born Again and the Tony Martin years? Jesus it sounds like an entirely different band, and not in a good way. Everything after Mob Rules is the end of Black Sabbath. Their only saving grace is that they stopped putting out new music after 1995.
20 years ago I would've laughed and said Sabbath, now shut up. I grew up, even though Sabbath is as critical a band as they come in rock evolution. But...Zep Zep Zep
Led Zep definitely, all their albums are good, not all of Sabbath's albums are good
ReplyDeleteOverall, Sabbath. Zeppelin were better musicians, but Sabbath was metal, and Zeppelin was more hard rock.
ReplyDeleteSabbath!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is the big one. There'd be no Sabbath without Zep, but I'm still gonna pick Black Sabbath.
ReplyDeleteSabbath.

If I am ever forced to listen to Zep, I want it to be their last 2.
