ReplyDeleteSorry Mark but this isn't even a fair contest. Appetite is one of the greatest hard rock/metal albums of all time. Every song flat out rocks. Yes, I can't stand Axl either. But this isn't about him it's about the band and where they were at at this stage. Shout is a good record but no way as consistant as Appetite.
ReplyDeleteSATD is a superficial view of the hedonistic LA scene that pretty much celebrates stupidity. Appetite has a darker view of the same scene a few years later and digs deeper. It present more of the ugly reality even as it is up to its ears in the same debauchery. That, however, gives it its redeeming quality. GnR had the guts to actually write a meaningful love song as well. Appetite has stronger, more relevant songs and better musicians (except behind the drum kit). There's really no contest here.

Shout at the devil is solid, but there were other bands doing this style at the time the Crue just happened to be one of the better ones at the time. G-n-R was more unique from what was going on in the hard rock scene at the time. Appetite certainly holds up better over time as well. If I listen SATD I always end up skipping through some songs. With Appetite I listen to it from beginning to end.
ReplyDeleteGnR are legendary and this is their best album. While they have come to shit recently, AfD is the definite article when it comes to mainstream metal. Motley Crue can't hold a candle to GnR, even with Axl being a prick.

"Shout At The Devil" impacted me and my buddies in such an enormous way when it was released. Both albums have the shelf life... only personally, I'll take "Shout At The Devil" over any GNR album, any day of the week. If you want "consistency"... it isn't GNR, not in "my" Metal past or present.
ReplyDeleteThis is ahard one, Appetite has a bunch of kick-ass songs, but so does Shout At the Devil, but I do prefer the cure over GNR, so it will be Shout At the Devil

ReplyDeleteAppetite - hands down. I love the Crue, but they've always sounded self-conscious to me...conversely this was the one moment in Guns' career where they didn't seem to try to be selling an image.
ReplyDeleteIt might be more interesting to compare AFD with Too Fast for Love. Each was a debut, each sounded raw compared to future releases, and each had a subtle element of punk rock to them (which -- oddly enough -- both band haplessly attempted to pay homage to/cash in on later in their careers, to laughable results).
