Angel Witch-As above, so below

NWOBHM pioneers Angel Witch have returned again with another offering. This marks their first studio album since 1998. This line-up consists of founding member Kevin Heybourne (vocals/ lead guitar) plus drummer Andrew Prestidge and Will Palmer on bass. Veteran guitarist Bill Steer will appearing live with the band, but he didn't play on this album. These guys are kind of an odd act. Depending on who you talk to they were either one of the most overrated or one of the most underrated bands of the NWOBHM scene. Either way I think it has to be said they had and still have their own style. If you get past the solid production values and the slightly more focused approach, these guys don't sound different than they did in the early 80's. I mean that in the positive sense. Seriously many veteran bands come out today and just sound old and tired. Like they should have stayed home instead of trying to get back on the stage. However Angel Witch surge back with instant classics like "Witching Hour" and "Brainwashed". These guys have found a way to retain their prime sound but also bring it today's metal scene. The result is a surprisingly impressive release. I am sure I will be playing this one quite a bit over the next few months.

  1. I have to add the more I listen to this one the more I like it. There have been some solid releases from NWOBHM bands in recent years like Saxon, Raven, Praying Mantis and Bitches Sin. However the new Anegl Witch really caught me by surprise. Hope this line-up holds together for a while.

    2. My only complaint about this album would be that I wish it had a few more tracks.

  3. Joshua-The vocals are amazing. A perfect fit. I have only heard this album three times and I expect to enjoy more once I give it a few more spins.
