What's coming up?

Photobucket

So we have a new president, the Super Bowl is just over a week away and the bad cold spell we had has seemingly snapped for now at least. I broke down and bought the Planet of the apes movie set on DVD when I saw it for a good price. I already own the underrated and short lived TV series plus the rather week cartoon series. I saw all of the movies years ago and used to have them taped on VHS. The first film is fantastic of course. The second has some good ideas and a dark outlook, but it's uneven at best. The third film is good, but just a reverse of the original. The forth film is perhaps the second best of the series. The final film is average at best, but still worth watching. Kind of funny how each sequel got a smaller budget and today the budgets seem to get larger on sequels. So much for the monkeys, this week I hope to have these topics out.

  1. The Apes series is awesome. I have always wanted to buy the limited edition set that came with all 6 movies (the re-make included), the TV series and cartoon inside the Cornelius ape head. There's one at the local record store for $100, when it came out years ago it was $175. Nothing beats an ape marathon, there was one on one of the Cinemax channels around New Years.

The first is a cinematic classic and the second is pretty good but the rest go down as the budget did. I agree with you that Conquest is solid but I slot Battle before Escape, it always seems like a more of a novelty instead of an important part of the story. Plus, would the ship have been unsalvagable being at the bottom of the dead lake? I'm not going to get into Ape semantics but its an underrated series.

  2. Steve-The ship in Escape is a plot hole, but it's a minor point compared to all the time travel that we are asked to accept. They painted themselves into a corner in some ways at the end of the second movie. So they had to stretch things to do another sequel. Battle was okay and some of the acting was decent, but I chuckle at the very scaled down battle scene. They use so many close-ups so you don't see how few people are really involved due to the low budget. I have always thought the tv show was underrated and it was improving as they went along. It's a shame that it didn't get to go at least a whole season.
