Convulse-Inner Evil EP

Svart Records
2013

Earlier this year Finland's Convulse made their long-awaited return by playing a few live shows in their native land. Despite being away for 18 long years, and seeing the death metal landscape change dramatically, the band were able to pick right back up where they last left off. Originally a speed metal band known as S.D.S., Convulse formed back in 1988. With the release of their 1990 demo, "Resuscitation Of Evilness", the band was able to attract the attention of the French record label Thrash Records. The band would go on to release two full-length albums, "World Without God" and "Reflections" (Released on Relapse Records), another demo and the CD-single, "Lost Equilibrium" (Not necessarily in that order) before things feel apart. That was then though and this is now. With this 2-track EP, which is admittedly way too short, Convulse find themselves pointed straight ahead despite having a release drenched in old-school metal. Recorded earlier this year in full analog (A much welcomed return to the past if you ask me), these two tracks are exclusive to this EP. While I should point out that both tracks are on the longer side of things, 5:55 and 6:05 to be exact, you are still left wanting to hear more. Since a full-length album of new material is scheduled for autumn of 2013 there is hope on the horizon for those of us who can't get enough of old-school/90's death metal. With the original vocalist, bassist and guitarist (Rami Jämsä, Juha Telenius and Kristian Kangasniemi respectively)
back together in Convulse (Drums on this EP are handled by Rolle Markos of When The Empire) fans of the band would be well served should checking out this new EP. If you've never heard of Convulse though, as they were a bit of an underground band back in the day, then this EP can serve as a introduction then. Due for release on January 25th, too late for Christmas unfortunately, this 2-track EP will be issued in the form of limited vinyl, CD and digital. There is one last bit of buzz-worthy news before I wrap up this review. In addition to a highly-anticipated new album, which I hope to snag for review, Convulse has also been added to next year's edition of the Maryland Deathfest. So, not only do we have a new album to look forward to, but we also have a chance to see Convulse on our side of the pond!
