Can there ever be enough death metal in this world of ours? Or is too much of a good thing a bad thing? Take Gatineau, Québec's Insurrection for example. While there's nothing present on "Prototype" that would suggest either a lack of talent or questionable sincerity, which are two very important staples of any good band obviously, is there anything at all to make them stand out or do they just blend quietly into the scene? There's no reason that you, the reader, would have any better idea then me, but I can't shake the feeling that perhaps this once underground scene is getting too crowded for it's own good. That's not meant to be a sign of disrespect towards this Canadian bunch as, by-the-numbers, their take on death metal is not all that bad. The one-time bassist turned lead vocalist Stéphane Jomphe (ex-Dissentient, ex-Mortör) goes all in on album number three for this group, which was formed in 2003 by the way, and his delivery suites Insurrection just fine. The same goes for the overall band and their "all for the glory of death and destruction" take on death metal. Nothing here gets too far ahead of itself for it's own good and the band never lapses into sloppiness. To get this far ahead you do have to have the talent and drive as well as loyal fans to support your journey. I hear nothing here that could hold back this bunch. Release number three for these Canadian death thrashers is fine. Why then is it that I can't muster more enthusiasm? Is it that I'm having a bad case of the Mondays? Or maybe it's just that as good as this band is there is nothing new or exciting under the sun to get all worked up over. The truth probably falls somewhere in-between all of that. So, if you can't get enough death metal then "Prototype" might be the fix you're needing. But, if you want death metal that's a stone cold killer then you might want to listen to this one first before you buy into the notion that any & all death metal albums make for must-buys.
