Over-Under

No, I am not referring to that skit from the movie Airplane, but rather something about music. I have asked about bands that you think are overrated or underrated before. However this is something slightly different.

Are there any bands that you liked years ago and now you listen to them and think they are not as good as you once thought they were?

The opposite would be to think of any bands that you didn't think were that good years ago and now you listen to them and think they really are better than you gave them credit for?

I can think of two for each category.

Two bands that I overrated are Exciter and Grim Reaper. Exciter are a Canadian speed metal band that I loved from say 85-88. I listened to them recently and realized they had some good songs, but a lot of average ones as well. I used to love Grim Reaper back in the mid-80's as well. Now I listen to them and although the guitarist was good, the singer was annoying and their writing was poor at times.

Two bands I underrated were Trouble and Cinderella. I never got into Trouble in the 80's because I was into a lot of speed metal and I thought they were dull. Now I listen to them and I like their Sabbath inspired music and they got better with each album. I can't wait for their reunion album to come out this summer. I thought Cinderella were weak glam metal in the 80's. While I don't think Night Songs is anything great, I do feel that Long, cold winter and Heartbreak station are fantastic albums. Tom Keifer has a great rock voice and they are strong song writers. Although they have as much to do with a classic rock sound as they do with hard rock.

Over - I'd say that my band for that would be Ratt. I really enjoyed them growing up, but as I've gotten older, You're in Love and Slip of the Lip just sound cheesy.

Under - I actually began listening to Megadeth more after I turned 20. For some reason, just never was interested, but now I love to listed to Peace Sells, Crush 'em etc.

To comment on one of yours, Cinderella always appealed to me, especially Long Cold Winter. I liked the bluesy tunes on that album.

Oh, man. There was a bunch of hair metal that I listened to that I hear today and wonder what I was thinking. My #1 choice would be Europe.

As far as under-rated goes (and this has nothing to do with metal), I HATED Duran Duran with a passion in my high school days, but really enjoy them a lot now.

Overrated- I'd go along with Ratt. Other than "Round and Round", there wasn't much else I liked.

Underrated- Judas Priest. It wasn't until years later that I truely started to appreciate them.

Mike and Bruce-I agree about Ratt. I thought Ratt were great when I was teenager, but now I think they are just good.

V and D- I agree about Ozzy except I think that No more tears was a great album.

Strutter- I don't think that I have ever heard a whole album by Duran Duran so I really can't judge.

Great question! Funny, my first reaction to your question -- on the under side -- was ... Cinderella! I had the same view that you did back in the day, and the same higher opinion now.

Unlike Mike, I didn't like Ratt at all back then and now I find them much more fun to listen to. Except for "Slip of the Lip." I'm with you, Mike; I'll admit that those lyrics are just painful to hear.

Also, unlike Vic&Del, I dismissed the first Frehley's Comet offering then, and now find most of it to be great, straightforward rock. Not "Dolls," though--I'll never like that schlock.

OK, my others ... I used to over-rate:
Annihilator
Post-Pyromania Def Leppard
Pantera
Sammy Hagar-era Van Halen

I used to under-rate:
Dokken
Blue Murder
Overkill
Jimi Hendrix

David- Def Leppard did albums after Pyromania? I will just say that I wasn't too pleased when I heard Hysteria the day it came out. I may give it a spin soon and write a review to see if it is any better.
I like Annihilator's first 2 releases and the rest are hit and miss.
I do think Panter were overated. However along with Metallica they did help keep metal alive in above ground circles during the 90's. I do think that was important in keeping metal alive.

Mark - I agree with you on No More Tears. That's one of my favoite Ozzy albums.

General comment about Ratt - I will admit that I still listen to Out of the Cellar occasionally, but that's pretty much it.
