Have you ever.....

I have not done an afternoon post in a while, but here is one.
Three simple questions that may or may not apply to you.

1)Have you ever stopped listening to a band based on something they did other than a bad album? Who and why?
2)Have you ever thrown out a cd or given it away because it was so bad? What was it?
3)Have you ever been unable to finish listening to an album you bought because it was so bad? What was it?

Great Questions, Mark!

1. I know I did once and I can't remember why but it may have been Def Lepard (I have to think about it) I do know that along those lines I refuse to listen to the "new" INXS because in my eyes once Michael was gone the band died and I don't appreciate them replacing him with some guy they found on a tv show.

2) I remember driving in the car with my son and he put on a Kid Rock CD that I thought was bad so I took it out of the CD player and tossed it out the window like a Frisbee and said "that's crap, you need to listen to real rock music" Then I put on some Zeppelin turned up full volume. His friends in the back seat nearly peed their pants in disbelief. I have a reputation for being a cool mom - a bit weird, but cool.

3. Yes, several, once again my bad memory won't bring it to mind.

I agree...great questions.

1. Anthrax for kicking John Bush out. This final move just put me over the edge with Anthrax and after all the trashing they did of Joey over the years! I also have found that it's hard for me to listen to Ozzy and Zack Wylde after the Iron Maiden egging incident. Ozzy's solo stuff in particular is hard for me to listen to since they released those remasters without Daisly and Kerslake.

2. Primus - The Brown Album. I had finally lost my taste for this band by this release. I gave it to my brother, who probably sold it.

3. Celtic Frost - Cold Lake. I don't think that I've made it through this once. Another contender would be Megadeth's Risk.

Hmmm...maybe I take music way too serious...

1-I used to love Kiss and Motley Crue and I still like the music, but I rarely listen to them anymore. Kiss because of all the merchandise and dressing Thayer and Singer as Ace and Peter. Motley Crue because Vince Neil is a mean, old drunk who caused a person's death yet he's still getting loaded and acting like an ass.

2-I remember buying a cd by a band whose name escapes me, but it was so bad I gave it to my college roommate. He listened to it once and threw it off the balcony of oour dorm.

3-Ratt's self titled album from '99 (overpolished crap), Ozzy's cover album from last year(truly horrible) and Bongzilla's Amerijuanican(really, really boring) all come to mind.

Layla-Good move on the Kid Rock cd.

Fred- I understand about Cold Lake and Risk. My jaw dropped when I saw Celtic Frost on Headbanger's Ball on their video from that album in 88. Risk was a surprisingly bad album coming after Cryptic Writings which I actually thought was decent.

John Bush is out of Anthrax? When did that happen, I really had no clue!

Strutter-That happened more than a year ago. Anthrax did a first tour with Joey last year. They did more touring this year and they have a new album planned at some point. John Bush is back in Armored Saint and they played a handful of dates so far this summer.

Rage Against the Machine- it just got to be to much about Zack and his political beliefs and less about the music.

As big a fan I am of Def Leppard, "Slang" was pretty much unlistenable, IMO. In fact, the only reason I bought it was because my lady browbeat me into it. Another reason I gave it away was because it just drudged up too many memories after we split up.

I'm sure I have, but none come to mind at the moment.

That should read "more about Zack", not "much".

1. no if I like the music I listen to it.

2. God no! I would never give a CD away even if it was terrible (to me CD's are like memories)

3.No, The beauty of Cd's is you can just skip past the tracks you hate ;)

It's funny you ask that.

I've just done an album review for a Prog Rock album by a band called The Mars Volta for my web site.

It received glowing musical reviews by almost everyone, and I just don't get it. To me it was some of the most self obsessed pompous crap I have ever listened to, and yet I still went through every track in detail 3 times in a row, and boy was it a struggle.

And I never throw an album away, however bad it is.

Mark: I didn't mention Kiss because I figured that they were a given. They now have Kiss Perfume and the Kiss Coffee house which has been well documented at David Amulet's site. When will the madness end?

I liked Cryptic Writings as well. Good solid heavy rock with some thrashers thrown in.

I just finished reading Tom Fischers autobiography on Celtic Frost. It detail everything that led up to Cold Lake. It's amazing what these guys endured between their label problems and inter-band turmoil. A great read for any metal fan.

1. Not that I can remember.
2. Kingdome Come - In Your face. I gave it to a friend that thought it was ok.
3. Yes. GnR Spaghetti Incident. I heard it was bad before I bought it, but I liked their version of "Hair of the Dog". I couldn't get thru the whole album though.

Bruce-I heard Slang once and remember nothing about it.

Pixie-I count skipping through a track as not being able to finish the album.

Ben-I have a friend who loves Mars Volta and I tried to listen to an albuma nad made it through three tracks. I know there are Joe Satriani and Yngwie Malmsteen albums that I have not been able to finish as well.

Fred-I might have to check out Tom G.'s book some time.

Mike-I am not sure I made it through the first Kingdom Come even though I have it on vinyl.

1. Great White -- I live in Rhode Island and I used to go to The Station in West Warwick for almost every show that came thru there. Met some great people there from the staff, audience, bands, and crew....had a lot of good times there.

Two weeks before the show, I mentioned it to my then-pregnant wife. We hadn't had a night out in a long time because I work 3rd shift and we have a daughter. I figured the Great White show would be a nice night out before the 2nd baby came. We decided to get tix the day before the show in case she wasn't feeling well.

We forgot about the show, I went to work that night. On the way to work, I saw all these fire/rescue/police speeding in the opposite direction on the highway. Didn't think anything of it.....until I got to work and the phones wouldn't stop ringing.

Since the Station Nightclub Fire, I haven't been able to listen to Great White. Maybe a song every now and again, I did listen to Jack Russell's solo album, For You, but I filed it away soon after. Lost many friends that night.

2. I have my fair share of duds in my collection but I keep every album because there was a reason why I bought it. It's a reminder of what NOT to buy and its a piece of my personal music journey.

There is one exception: I was given Nirvana's Nevermind as a joke gift. My hatred for Nirvana is deep and my friends all know it. I opened the package, saw it, and pitched it!

3. Iced Earth - The Glorious Burden -- I've been into Iced Earth since the debut in 1991 and I thought that adding Tim "Ripper" Owens would add a new dimension to the band. The songwriting kills this album. I finished it eventually but it took a long time.

Kittie - Spit -- I won a free copy when they were on Ozzfest 2000. It's awful, I've never passed the 2nd tune.

Metallica - St. Anger -- Another horrible album that I wasted 10 bucks on. I made it thru but it took a good year of trying.

Cherry Roxx - 1 -- An indie release from 2003 that got some hype on the collector's forums. A bad glam/sleaze album that took until last month for me to finally get thru.

Nirvana - Nevermind

Layla -- Kid Rock is awful, you did what any good parent would do.

Fred -- Gotta agree about Anthrax. Kicking out John Bush for a quick cash grab was a mistake.

Mike -- Kingdom Come! Another truly awful band. I had a buddy back in the day that absolutely loved them.

Steve-I listened to St. Anger once when I bought it, but have not listened to it since. Your mention of Cherry Roxx reminded me that I bought a cd from a band called Gun Shy. It was released a year or so ago, but was recorded like twelve years ago. I have had it for two months and still have not gotten through it. Just very average overall. Kingdom Come will be opening for Helloween when they come to the states this fall.

Agreed on St. Anger and The Glorious Burden. Each of those took me MONTHS to get through.

I gave away a Morbid Angel CD because it was so bad. I'm also considering giving away Isis, Panopticon. Parts of it were OK, but most of it was awful and I didn't see myself picking it up ever again. Mastodon's Leviathan is another one getting more dust than play in my house.

David-I liked the first two Morbid Angels, but some of the others were hard to take. I heard a lot of build up on Isis and just couldn't get in to them. However, I think Mastodon are great. I think they successfully crossed death metal with traditional metal influences and the new album is going to be really good.
