Theme weeks

I have just a few more theme weeks left this year. Next week is rock music week then I will do Black Sabbath week in October and Oh, Canada week in November. I don't do one in December because I am doing my top ten albums of 1986 countdown. So I am already thinking of themes for 2007 and I need 11 because I won't be doing one in December. Here is what I have so far.
Motorhead week
AC/DC week
Kiss week
70's hard rock week
Metal around the world week
Guitarist week
Underrated singer week
Slow as hell week (doom metal and stoner rock)
New wave of British heavy metal week

So I need two more, let me know if you have any ideas. I was thinking about doing a week dedicated to punk rock albums I would recommend for metal fans, but I am not sure on that one.

What about Grunge Rock/Seattle scene (Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, etc)?

I'm glad you picked up the around the world theme, that will be fun.

I'd love to see a "supergroup" theme -- which amalgamations (did I just say that?) worked and which didn't. You could do everything from the prog metal of Liquid Tension Experiment and other Dream Theater side projects to hard rock/quasi-metal like Velvet Revolver to the not-as-supergroups like Brides of Destructon.

Mike-Not on my blog. Although it's not out of the question that the topic of the rise of grunge and the fall of metal will appear as a topic or two at some point in the future.

David-That's a decent idea, I may use it if you don't mind.

Sorry I have not commented lately - I still read. Just left a comment for your wife, very sad news.

Can't wait for your upcoming themes!!

Keep rocking, Mark.

Mark: Please do. I suggested it because I knew you could do it justice! (Just don't forget casual mentions of Asia, GTR, and Damn Yankees.)

No problem Mark. I knew it was a little out of the 80's rock timeframe that you normally post about. Just an idea.

Mike-I like Soundgarden a lot and AIC a little, but I guess it still bothers me that this stuff killed of a lot of hard rock and metal bands.

I think I will take David's suggestion of supergroup week and I may do yet another rock movies week next year.

KISS week sounds good, I might have a comment or two for that.

Same with NWOBHM week. Hopefully, you'll dig deep for that one, past Def Lep, Maiden, and Saxon. I know of some obscure NWOBHM bands.....Tokyo Blade anyone? Fist?
Trespass? There are some great sites/lists out there as well.

I'm a metal fan, first and foremost, but regarding grunge, metal bands in the early 90s were not at the top of their game. Even metal bands that I really like were putting out subpar records. Something needed to come along and kick metal in it's ass. The funny thing is that most of the grunge bands were huge fans of metal. I remember reading that while Nirvana was recording Bleach, they had Celtic Frost in heavy rotation in the studio. Alice in Chains even had Tom Araya do a guest "scream" on a track on thir Dirt album. I think Dave Grohl is the most obvious metal fan with his Probot project.

Fred-I think metal was in some ways on a decline around say 1988, but a few bands with big hits like Metallica, Motley Crue and a few others kept it going for a while. I also think that the record labels were to fault for the fall of metal as well. Between say 1988-91 major labels were signing piles of bands, but didn't bother to think how to promote these bands.

Columbia Records nearly destroyed every act on Earache. They signed Napalm Death, Carcass, Godflesh, Bolt Thrower and a load of others to a major deal and dumped all of them after one record since they didn't know how to market them. Most of the bands almost self-destructed after that.
