Battle of the bands

Super Bowl weekend is a good time for one of these match-ups. It is...

Celtic Frost

Mercyful Fate

Celtic Frost came out of the ashes of Hellhammer and for most of the 80's progressed from album to album. They had one clunker, but rebounded well enough. They displaced a uniquely heavy sound and were not afraid to experiment.

Mercyful Fate emerged in the early 80's and progressed fast behind a duel guitar attack and one of a kind vocals of King Diamond. Unfortunately their first run was all too brief. They did come around again in the 90's.

Mercyful Fate only by the slightest of margins. I adore the early work of both bands but I seem to reach for Fate a little more often then Frost.

Good matchup.

King Diamond's voice isn't one of a kind. It's actually a lot like fingernails on a chalkboard. But the real reason I can't get into either of these bands is that I just can't stand all the devil stuff.

Close battle. Mercyful Fate's early stuf is fantastic. I think the big difference is that Celtic Frost progressed a lot and MF didn't as much plus their second run was hit and miss. So Celtic Frost for me.

Mercyful Fate. I really love their album Melissa. But I'm not sure if I'll ever try anything else.

Celtic Frost I've listened to online and think they're pretty awful.

But like Bob said, the devil stuff is a turn off. And I'm not even religious.

I'll have to with Mercyful Fate on this one. Mainly based on the 80's stuff from both of them. I didn't follow them in their reformed versions.
The song structures by Fate were better and it's one of the few times I preferred King Diamond's vocals over someone else. Tom Gabriel Fischer's vocals were horrible even by 80's extreme metal standards and killed any enjoyment I could have for the band.

Metal Misfit, if you liked Melissa than you have to get Don't Break the Oath. Those 2 go hand in hand.

I'm gonna have to go with Celtic Frost. I actually like the early Mercyful Fate tapes more now than I did back in the 1980's. I loved the music but hated Queen Rhinestone's screech. Now I just think it's kinda funny. Never had much of a problem with Tom G's death grunts.

On an overall level it would have to be Mercyful Fate, of course.... they influenced scores of bands to follow and created a genre all their own.
C.F. are also masters of their genre - so it's difficult to compare them to M.F.
