Interview With Bob Mitchell

Recently I had the pleasure of interviewing legendary heavy metal vocalist Bob Mitchell. In addition to singing with Alchemy X, Attacker and Vyndykator Bob is currently fronting a re-formed Sleepy Hollow. I want to thank Bob for taking time away from his busy schedule to talk with us here at Heavy Metal Time Machine and if you haven't already be sure to pick up a copy of Sleepy Hollow's new album "Skull 13"

Andy: Bob, thanks for taking the time to answer a few questions for Heavy Metal Time Machine. Let’s start off with the new album. Can you tell us how did it come about? How did the band get back together after so much time apart?

Bob Mitchell: It all came together rather quickly. Steve (Stegg, guitarist) had all of this great music written, plus, we had some material that was written back in the nineteen eighties when the band first got together, but, it never came together until now.Over the years the band has sustained its popularity and in recent years there was a renewed interest so it was suggested by several friends that we get back together again and it wasn’t even of matter of giving it a second thought. We knew that the time was right and now we are enjoying successes that should have happened years ago, but as they say, better late than never.

Andy: "Skull 13" really packs a punch. You must be thrilled by all the positive reviews.

BM: Thank you for the compliment, brother. Personally, I am deeply humbled and I know this feeling reflects the band as a whole as well as our producer Eric Fisher. A lot of love and work went into this album. Amongst ourselves, we are very proud of our new album and to now see the positive reactions from not only the press members but from the fans and our peers is just simply incredible.

Andy: You've had some line-up chances since the album was finished. Tell us what happened?

BM: Quite simply, our original bass player could not commit, in any capacity, to the band. As we were finishing up the recording of the album we had gotten some offers for live performances and we had asked our friend Mike LePond to join us as our “live” bassist. After our live commitments were fulfilled, it was at Mike’s high recommendation that we get Alan (D’Angelo). So without hesitation we brought him in and we are now a complete band. Alan is such an asset to us and he’s an invaluable member. He’s in our new video “Spiral Effect” and we had our first performance with Alan at the Gramercy Theater in New York when we opened for the Michael Schenker Group.

Andy: You formed Sleep Hollow back in August of 1989 correct? How did it all come about?

BM: Our guitarist was getting married at the time. So, Tommy (Wassman, drummer) and I were invited and during the reception we talked about jamming together and then the conversations got serious enough that we decided to officially become a band. So we did and the rest, as they say, is history.

Andy: Sleepy Hollow was short lived. What happened?

BM: Steve had decided to leave the band and we decided that we wanted to continue. Before that he recorded our self titled album that was eventually released by Azra records. We tried becoming a two guitar band but quite honestly, as hard as we tried, it wasn’t the same without him so after about two years, approximately, I retired the band and walked away from music for a while.

Andy: You've been in quite a few bands over the years. How does Sleepy Hollow stack up against the others?

BM: Well I’ve had tremendous success with some and not so much with the others. Each band was great in their own respective way, and quite different from one another, however. In my heart, I really believe that we can and we will surpass anything I have ever done and earn ourselves some great success. In the last month, or so, we have already read the great reviews to our album. At our live shows, recently, the response to our new music has been tremendous so it’s already happening and God willing, it will only get better.

Andy: “Skull 13" saw the majority of the original Sleepy Hollow line-up return except for Steve Brink. Does Steve still play music?

BM: I’m not sure to be honest. I don’t keep in touch with him. But knowing him, he’s probably doing well for himself.

Andy: What does the year hold for Sleepy Hollow? Tour plans for the US?

BM: We are currently performing and as of now, and it could change after this interview is published, we are booked through July with more offers coming in. I would suggest going to our official website for more details.

Andy: Hopefully "Skull 13" is not a one time deal. Please tell us Sleepy Hollow is back for good. Right?

BM: No it is not a one time deal. Sleepy Hollow is contracted for two more albums with Pure Steel. As much as we will be busy promoting “Skull 13”, we’re already formulating ideas for the next album. So believe me when I tell you, we’re here for the long run my friend. We’ll continue as long as the fans want us.

Andy: "Skull 13" was produced by guitarist Steve Stegg and Eric Fisher correct? Also, it was recorded in a very non-traditional way if I'm not mistaken with the guitars being recorded first followed by the drums, the vocals the bass and then more guitars. With such an unconventional approach one might expect "Skull 13" to sound artificial. That isn't the case at all however as the production is simply outstanding. How did the band achieve a sound that was both modern and yet classic in nature?

BM: Hmmm…. not sure how I could answer that since I am not technically inclined, (laughs). In your question you pointed out the main details on the making of “Skull 13” and I agree the results are outstanding and our producer Eric (Fisher) along with Steve brought their respective visions to light thus resulting in an album of tremendous Heavy Metal music tailored for the fans. I enjoyed myself during the vocal sessions and it was very much an easy process. I am very proud of this album and everyone involved with making it happen.

Andy: What is your favorite track on the new album?

BM: I would have to say that “Spiral Effect” is my absolute favorite followed by “Midnight” and “Eternal Bridge”. Actually, I love the entire album but those three really do it for me.

Andy: How is it that even after all these years apart the band sounds better than ever Bob?

BM: I believe it can be summed up this way, we are true to ourselves and we have tremendous passion for what we do. We also have a strong chemistry and friendship amongst ourselves. Those are the key ingredients that will sustain Sleepy Hollow for a long time to come.

Andy: Is there anything you'd like to tell your fans out there?

BM: I speak on the bands behalf on this so thanks to all of the fans for keeping us alive for the entire time we were gone. “Skull 13” is our gift to all of you. We look forward to seeing all of you on stage and we will continue to bring Metal to the Masses as long as you want us.

Andy: How about I give you the final word. Any final thoughts?

BM: Thank you brother for this opportunity. I always enjoy doing these interviews and I hope that it was informative as well as entertaining. Take care and enjoy “Skull 13”.

Saturday Singles: Snowy Shaw-"Fire" and Sleepy Hollow-"Bound By Blood"

It's been awhile since I last did a Saturday Singles feature so for that I do apologize. To make it up to all of my faithful followers (all half dozen of you!) I would like to present two songs that have personally been rocking my days and nights! First up is Snowy Shaw (Cans, Mad Architect, Notre Dame, ex-Illwill, XXX, Maryann Cotton (live), ex-Dream Evil, ex-King Diamond, ex-Nightrage (live), ex-Sabaton (live), ex-Scheepers (live), ex-Therion (live), ex-Mercyful Fate, ex-Memento Mori, ex-Colossus (live), ex-K2, ex-Loud N'Nasty, ex-Them Sluts! (live) and ex-Snowy Shaw and the Star-Spangled Banned) with his take on a all-time favorite of mine and then we will have a new cut from traditional heavy metal outfit Sleepy Hollow. Enjoy!

Snowy Shaw is pretty well-known within metal circles thanks to his involvement with King Diamond and Merciful Fate as well as Dream Evil. With "Fire" Snowy Shaw pays tribute to the one and only Arthur Brown and if you are old enough and weird enough like I am you might remember hearing the original version of this on Dr. Demento back in the day! Originally released in 1968(!), "Fire" was issued as a single and it also appeared on the album "The Crazy World of Arthur Brown". With the opening line "I am the god of hell fire and I bring you...FIRE!" becoming a well known catchphrase this dark and twisted psychedelic rock number would go on to be covered by everyone from The Ventures to God Dethroned! What I like about Snowy Shaw's version is how well this one-time drummer turned front-man captures the spirit of Arthur Brown while simultaneously giving it modern shock rock makeover that is part Rob Zombie and part King Diamond! The video version below was captured live in Sweden on Halloween 2012 and it is taken from the "Snowy Shaw Live DVD/CD Box, The Liveshow: 25 Years Of Madness In The Name Of Metal." which can be found here:http://shop.textalk.se/en/shop.php?id=25422

Next up we have traditional/power metal band (and Heavy Metal Time Machine fave!) Sleepy Hollow with their brand new single "Bound By Blood". This is first single from the band's as yet untitled 2015 release and since we last checked in with this band (http://metalmark.blogspot.com/2012/03/sleepy-hollow-skull-13.html) there has been a few changes in personnel. Unfortunately "Due to personal differences and scheduling" Sleepy Hollow and vocalist Bob Mitchell have decided to part ways. That's a big time bummer. Fortunately for Sleepy Hollow and their fans the gods of metal stepped right in and new lead vocalist Chapel Stormcrow (Altar Of Dagon) sounds downright killer on "Bound By Blood"! As does the band's new bass player Rich Fuester who is also of Altar Of Dagon fame! While the doom metal influences of Chapel and Rich's other band will fit in nicely with Sleepy Hollow's new direction it's a bit odd to consider that Altar Of Dagon evolved out of a melodic death metal band called Alazith! Credit has to go to guitarist Steve Stegg then as he was able to see the perfect picture that would be created by these new additions. Steve made the right call with Sleepy Hollow's new vocalist and bass player as "Bound By Blood" feels like empowered Sleepy Hollow with a tougher attitude and a darker edge! With Sleepy Hollow reportedly busy at Dirge studios in Newark, DE recording 11 tracks in all for their 2015 follow-up to "Skull 13" (an album that I will jump all over once it hits the open market!) one has to imagine that Steve Stegg and company will deliver a fantastic new album next year!

Sleepy Hollow-Skull 13

Pure Steel Records/High Roller Records
2012

Good things come to those who wait and that certainly holds true for Sleepy Hollow's long-awaited new album. "Skull 13" is an album I have been anxious to hear and from the opening moments of "Death of the Horseman" you just know that the long wait has been worth it! The instant Bob Mitchell lets out that first Rob Halford meets David Wayne shriek you know your going to be in for some great old-fashioned US metal of the highest caliber. Added by fellow (original) member's guitarist Steve Stegg and drummer Tommy Wassman and new bassist Mike LePond (of Symphony X fame) Bob wastes little time pulling you into the fire. These New Jersey power metal warriors blow things apart with tracks like "Facemelter" and "Bleed Steel". From the moment you turn this one on "Skull 13" has all the tools needed to make Sleepy Hollow into legends. With nods to bands like Saxon, Judas Priest, Symphony X, Grim Reaper and Metal Church this is one album that proves US power metal still has sharp teeth left. I can't recommend this one enough folks. If heavy metal runs in your blood like it does mine and you can't get enough of acts like Metal Church then "Skull 13" is a must-have. For the record Pure Steel Records is releasing the CD version while High Roller Records will put out the LP one. Also, if you so desire you can read my review of Sleepy Hollow's "Rest In Pieces" below.

Sleepy Hollow-Tales of Gods and Monsters

Pure Steel Records
2016

It's been a long-time coming, but U.S. metal band Sleepy Hollow has finally made their return to the scene in a big way thanks to the recently-released "Tales of Gods and Monsters". With a run-time that is close to the fifty minute mark(!), "Tales of Gods and Monsters" serves as the proper follow-up to 2012's "Skull 13" and finds Sleepy Hollow all settled in with their new line-up. Back in early November of 2015 I covered this album's insanely-tight single, "Bound By Blood", and I made a comment to the effect of "If  Sleepy Hollow had to replace vocalist Bob Mitchell with a new lead vocalist then they made a great choice by going with Altar Of Dagon's Chapel Stormcrow". Not only am I sticking by the assertion that Chapel Stormcrow is a excellent choice for the band, but I am going to go one step future and say that Sleepy Hollow's new front-man is the only choice for this band going forward! As crazy as that might sound please hear me out folks. On "Tales of Gods and Monsters" we find Sleepy Hollow moving back and forth between traditional/power metal material and a more doom-laden take on power metal. Given Chapel Stormcrow's other job (he still fronts Altar Of Dagon which is a doom metal band) he fits Sleepy Hollow's new directional change to a T! Obviously the addition of new bass player Rich Fuester helps the new direction out as well (seeing as Rich is also a member of Altar Of Dagon), but if ever there was a case to be made for a classic metal band drastically changing things up and then staying on the new course then this is it! Yes, Bob Mitchell is a legendary lead singer and he will always be one of heavy metal's all time greats. No one can deny that including yours truly. But with that said, "Tales of Gods and Monsters" is a absolute BEAST of an album! Sleepy Hollow's new album is arguably the best release from this classic metal band to date and a lot of that has to do with Chapel Stormcrow's dramatic style of singing! As others have so reliably pointed out (up to and including the actual promo material that accompanied this 11-track album!), Chapel Stormcrow brings an almost Candlemass-like vibe to the overall mix. And when you combine his dramatic voice with the unmatched skills of guitarist Steve Stegg you end up with PURE MAGIC! Or to put it another way, "Tales of Gods and Monsters" is not only a nice fucking awesome(!) mash-up of classic/traditional heavy metal, eighties-infused U.S. power metal, and modern doom metal, but it's one of 2016's BEST albums to date! For the members of Sleepy Hollow (which also features new drummer Allan Smith) "Tales of Gods and Monsters" proves to be the perfect follow-up to "Skull 13". Not only that, but "Tales of Gods and Monsters" proves that it's possible to bounce back after major line-up changes and actually improve upon what was already a damn great thing! It doesn't matter if you are a long-time fan of Sleepy Hollow or if you are just discovering this classic band for the first time. Either way "Tales of Gods and Monsters" is must have and it is one of those gems that you will be returning to time and time again!

Craving Angel-Dark Horse

Minotauro Records
2014

Originally self-released in 1987 and containing four tracks ("Match The Power", "Dark Horse", "Lust For Lust" and "Craving Angel") out of the thirteen that make up this recently-released career-retrospective from Minnesota-based hard & heavy outfit Craving Angel, the initial demo offering from this four-piece collective ended up becoming a bit of a favorite pastime for collectors of U.S. metal. Or at least that is what I would come to find out while I was doing my initial research for the collection "Dark Horse". Prior to hearing back from lead vocalist  Bud Hughes (with an interview to follow, Craving Angel should no longer be such a hidden secrete for many...or at least I hope so!) it was all such a mystery. Just who was Craving Angel exactly and why was it, despite the overall strength (and well-received nature of) of that initial four-track demo, that this U.S. metal act seemed to just vanish in thine air? While the previously mentioned interview will fill in a few more pieces to this puzzle (at least when I get around to posting it later today or sometime tomorrow) here's at least a brief rundown on the who, what, where and why of this White Bear Lake-based band. Formed back in the early part of the eighties by guitarist Scott Nelson, with bass guitarist Joe Zimilich and drummer Phil Coffman rounding out the ranks of Craving Angel, the band, at this junction now fronted by ex-Dungeon member (and all-around cool lead vocalist who sometimes sounds like a grittier Stephen Percy or, as an early review of the band's 1987 demo pointed out, a cross between Ronnie James Dio and Rob Halford!) Bud Hughes, hit the ground running with that 1987 demo. During this time other material was recorded and the band even did a video for the cleverly-named hard rocker (and somewhat Mötley Crüe-like) "Lust for Lust"! A move from Minnesota to L.A. became an essential strategy if this band had any hope at all of making it, but as to why they didn't in the end? Part of it would have to be the whole grunge-onset deal again while the other part, which is just my guess here, would have to be that when it came to Craving Angel they fell into that grey area where they were too heavy to really be considered a glam metal or sleaze metal band and they wee too light to be considered a full-fledged metal outfit. Too be fair to the band though, "Dark Horse" (or rather the material on this collection which was recorded between the mid eighties and mid nineties) is FAR from lightweight fair as the band drew as much from the likes of Dio, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Ozzy (both solo and with Black Sabbath!) as they did bands such as Ratt, Dokken and Mötley Crüe! Style-wise quite a bit of ground is covered on this compilation of course, but tracing this one track-track and recalling when and where each number was done would prove to be a hell of a chore so let's just hit "random" and see where the chips fall shall we? "Rein Again" opens this comp. though so we should try our hand at that one. Imagine a bit of Judas Priest/Iron Maiden eighties metal as interpreted by a young and hungry Dio-obessed four-piece and you would be on the right tack! "Match The Power" then carries a bit of the same energy although there are certainly a few hints here that the band might not have been that unfamiliar with the N.W.O.B.H.M. sound even if they were from a place like White Bear Lake, Minnesota! "Sorrows and Pains" for some reason reminds me of a more straight and narrow Twisted Sister while the ballad "Anybody Home" (as like "Say Your Prayers") comes across as equal parts (solo) Ozzy, Britney Fox, Kix and Faster Pussycat if (and only if!) they were more of a street-living, rough and ready rock outfit! Then there's "Suicide City" from 1992 or so where this act channels Hanoi Rocks and Guns N' Roses as much as they do AC/DC, but in a way more chilled fashion then any of those acts could ever be imagined indulging in! All of which brings us to what I LOVE about this collection. Under one umbrella (which we'll call "hard & heavy" and "L.A.-interested traditional heavy metal" just to keep things with an eye on the prize and all that jazz) the band Craving Angel created a ton of material that ranged from solid ("Green Eyed Lady") to down-right excellent ("Rein Again") and they did without anything really in the way of  serious financial backing! This collection (which should be heard in it's entirety to get the full benefit of everything this act had to offer!) showcases a band that had everything from actual skills to looks that would have been needed to take it to the next level. It's just that they seemed to show up at the wrong point in time. Still, it's better late then never when it comes to highlighting these kinds of (long-thought lost) acts and, as per usual, Minotauro Records does a bang up job when it comes to "Dark Horse". Sure, the album art does bare a slight resemblance to a few other albums I have in my collection (Sleepy Hollow's "Skull 13" coming to mind almost immediately!), but the way in which Minotauro Records has packaged this 13-track release speaks volumes as to the commitment they have to the bands on their roster. I'm going all in friends when it comes to recommending this one for all lovers of (eighties) hard and heavy acts! Especially as hearing is believing and "Dark Horse" has more then enough solid material to appease both fans and collectors alike!
