Heavy Metal Jukebox

Welcome to the debut of a new feature that I plan on doing monthly. I did borrow the name from Helloween's cover album from a few years back. Here's how it works, I list three songs and you just pick which of the three you prefer and add your reason why if you want. There will always be a theme of sorts to the three songs. So for the first month of the year, I thought of beginnings and that lead to me thinking of opening tracks. So here are three great opening tracks to choose from.

Iron Maiden-Aces High

Judas Priest-Freewheel Burning

Ozzy-I don't know

So which song do you choose?

I'm going with Judas Priest, Free Wheel Burning. I love this particular song. This is one of those songs that Halford really shows why he is the Metal God. Absolutely killer vocals on this one.

Yeah I agree, on Judas Priest... brilliant song to drive to, remember driving to 'varsity on this one. Second choice would be Ozzy but it is on a totally different rhythm so I don't know :). I could never really get into Aces High from Iron Maiden though... although I enjoyed the video they made on it.

Judas Priest - 'Freewheel Burning'

This is one fast album opener, the original speed metal if you will. Defenders is my favorite Priest album so I'm biased.

Let me just comment on the other two songs: Both are great tunes, especially 'Aces High', another great album opener. I am so sick of hearing Ozzy's 'I Don't Know' on the radio though.

Ozzy for me, love Randys killer riff, and always great when they played it live.
Priest second, Aces High's alright but I was never a great fan of the band.

I'd have to go with I Don't Know. I thought it was great when I first heard it, although they do play it a lot on the radio. But mainly because when I was in the AF people were always asking me what was going to happen, looking for advice, etc., and I just wished I could yell that at them most of the time. :)

I've gotta go with Maiden. A great opener.

I'm voting for Maiden, because I like Maiden more than Ozzy or Judas.

I like all three a lot and it is close for me to choose. However, I would go with Freewheel Burning largely because of Halford's vocals.

I'm going with Ozzy because I'm more old school.

My Vote: Aces High. I gave them all a new ear before making my pick. When I heard "Free Wheel Brunning" All I can see is the chessey Video (like the song) but cannot shake the video out of my head. I have to be in the right mood for Ozzy to give him a fair vote. DIF

Free Wheel Burnin'! Hell yeah! Great tune by Priest! The other songs, although good tunes in their own right, just don't do it for me the way Priest does.

I'd like to say I don't know, but then you'd wonder if I'm picking Ozzy or if I just can't make up my mind.

Oh, bugger. It's I Don't Know anyway.

Iron Maiden's Aces High gets my vote. Remembering seeing the video on Top Of The Pops as an impressionable 13 year old! A great song, great album opener and hasn't aged at all. Ozzy 'd get 2nd place from me in this vote.

Aces High because I am one of the few and far between who thinks that Maiden is better than both Priest and solo Ozzy.

This turned out pretty well. I may consider doing the Heavy Metal Jukebox twice a month if I can come up with enough themes. I will aim to do one in the first week of the month and one in the third week.

These are all great songs for sure, but Aces High is the winner. Tipton and Rhoads really shred in their songs, but the harmonies and interplay between Murray and Smith is more to my taste. Also, add the Churchill intro, and the subject matter and Aces High is the clear winner.
