Nation Beyond-The Aftermath Odyssey

2008

Sweden’s Nation Beyond has created a debut that combines elements of progressive, gothic and even classic style metal. They also aim to be as dramatic as they are powerful in their overall presentation. The high playing level contained on this recording is undeniable as are the lavish production values. However, the mix of styles is very smooth and the high use of keyboards no matter how competent the playing gives the album a rather glossy sound. I am sure that is what they were aiming for and it works enough for awhile. They largely avoid the falling into the all too common trap of individuals going off on self-indulgent tangent filled solos. There is no doubt that every piece and part played here is for the overall good of the song. Yet it just seemed like too many songs had the same approach and some of the tracks became a bit faceless as they sort of blended together more than they should of. Perhaps it’s a case of needing to control the pace more than vice versa. It’s a grand album for the most part and they have easily accomplished a great deal on this release, but I think that a little more attention to detail and taking their time would yield even greater results.
