Number 22

My top hard rock/heavy metal guitarist countdown moves on with number 22. It is...

Photobucket

Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King

Normally when you think of talented individuals in Slayer you think of drummer Dave Lombardo first. There is good reason for that, but this guitar duo contributed greatly as well. Not technically great yet they brought a much needed dose of heaviness to thrash and they built upon it. Thrash and death metal would not have been the same without their contributions.

So far we have..
25-Ace Frehley
24-Andy McCoy
23-James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett
22-Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King

I'll have number 21 out next week.

I'm not a big technical guitar guy, so I will ask the following question. "Is Kerry King that good?" Like I said I don't really know the answer, but to me it doesn't seem he is all that talented.

Martell- I think these two guys have to go as a pair. I think they added the heaviness, speed and a certain tightness to thrash that was very much needed in the mid-1980's. The technical ability isn't spectacular, but they did a lot with the ability they had and they impacted the metal scene with their ideas. So that's good enough for me.

So many people think technical skill is what matters, but anyone can practice a lot and learn to be fast. Clearly, you have to achieve some degree of proficiency, but creativity and feel are much more important. I really like that the list so far has reflected that.
