Weedeater-Jason the dragon

Photobucket

Southern Lord
2010

It’s been four years since the since last album from North Carolina’s Weedeater and in between 2007 and now they have toured a lot and suffered some injuries. In fact the injuries to the band members delayed the release of Jason the dragon by several months. Now it's a New Year, the bad luck of 2010 is behind Weedeater and most importantly there new release is upon us. Vocalist/bassist Dixie Dave leads the charge with his low rumbling vocals. The new album includes a variety of styles. We get full on doses of gritty sludge like Hammerhandle and the even thicker Mancoon. The oddly title Turkey Warlock will you down into a swirling pit of fuzzed out misery. We also get some change ups like the off kilter twang of Palms of opium. We even get treated to a spine-rattling drum instrumental in the form of March of the bipolar bear. Most of the tracks are relatively short, but the variety of this album definitely me feeling like I was getting massive doses of thick and edgy musical assaults. In fact this was one of those albums I took to right away and once the album finished I felt compelled to listen to it again right away. That was an urge that I followed several times while figuring out this review. Indeed it has been a long wait since the last album, but obviously it was worth it as Jason the dragon certainly delivers.
