Cold Blue Rebels-Blood, guts n' rock and roll

As a huge fan of Halloween and horror movies I get little down when my favorite holiday is past and next October is a long ways off. If someone can combine horror and music well I like that just as well and that kind of music frequently helps me make it through the year. Fortunately a few bands seemed to be at least partially guided by this mentality as well. So what we have here is a psychobilly band formed from members of glam/punk bands. Cold Blue Rebels feature Mickey Finn on lead vocals and harmonica from Jetboy, guitarist Joe Normal and upright bass player Danny Dangerous from the purple-haired band The Zeros, and drummer Spazz Draztik from Glamour Punks. The band brings their love of classic rock, rockabilly and punk rock plus as an added bonus it's all wrapped up in a horror theme. Some times I get apprehensive when I see a "supergroup" of sorts form and try a different style of music. Not that I am against musicians spreading their wings, but frequently this approach doesn't work out. Fortunately in this case the results are impressive. Imagine the Stray Cats colliding with the Ramones and the Misfits on a dark and stormy night near your local graveyard and that's a fair starting point. "Cold, blue and beautiful" establishes the bouncing groove that guides many of their songs. It's fueled by a toe-tapping beat and you'll be singing the chorus the first time you hear the song. Not to be a one trick pony "Hellblock 13" has a stronger early Misfits vibe pushed in with a skull nodding rockabilly gallop. The band proves their ability to handle slower tracks as well with the infectiously smooth sounds of the tale of a women who is live, dead then undead in the not quite a love song that is "Worm hole hooker". One of my favorites on the album is "Pumpkin King" which comes a cross as a Halloween type anthem that you could listen to year around. The juicy harmonica bits on that songs make make this big thumping monster even better. Seriously every song here is solid and what's more it's great fun. Their live shows are supposed to contain coffins, ghoulish girl dancers and lots of zombie make-up and blood. Their energy on this album has me thinking they would be even better live. So dig 'em up (pun intended) and check 'em out.
