Battle of the bands

It's time for battle of the bands. I list two bands and you state who you prefer and why. So this month it is:

Deep Purple vs. Scorpions

The Scorpions are probably one of the most consistent bands of all time. Yet I would go with Deep Purple as I tend to find them a bit more unique when they were in their prime and I think they have had a bigger influence on the scene.

Definitely Deep Purple, they've had a huge influence on music. They were original and increidible in their prime.

Yes DP have made a tremendous impact on r&r and I do like them a lot, but let's say if I were in a convertable and changing radio stations, looking for the perfect background song, if I had to choose between Space Truckin and No One Like You - I'd pick the Scorpions.

So, on average, Scorpions it is. :)

Deep Purple, not that I listen to them much but I would pick them over the scorpians any day.

I've noticed that the last few Deep Purple records have been receiving high ratings in the metal press. Have you heard any of their recent records?

I never cared for Deep Purple. Scorpions get my vote.

Both were/are influential, both are solid, great bands. I have to give the edge to band that helped create the genre, and produced one of the most important--and still most listenable--albums in rock, Machine Head: Deep Purple.

Extremely tough!

If you look at it from an influential standpoint, it's Deep Purple.

If you are looking at the most influential band for people who grew up with MTV wired to their heads, its the Scorpions.

Purple is an awesome band, a legend. Personnel changes may have scarred their legacy a bit but many of their albums are creations of perfection. Yes, their later albums have been very good, especially their last one RAPTURE OF THE DEEP.

The Scorpions have been around since the early 70s. Their early albums (Virgin Killer, Lonesome Crow, etc) get forgotten because of their MTV/headline success. Take a listen to TOKYO TAPES to get an idea of how great they were with Uli Jon Roth on guitar.

Now look at their success from 1979's Lovedrive (coinciding with the NWOBHM and the resurgence of U.S. Metal) thru Crazy World (1990), an amazing run of platinum records and radio hits. I was a young pup when I heard 'The Zoo' on radio and saw 'No One Like You' on MTV. They were huge in the 80s/early 90s. They get a lot of junk for being a "ballad band" because of the major success of 'Wind Of Change'.

I'll vote Scorpions.

OFF TOPIC: Metal, I never have anything to add to your music discussions so here is a recipe for peach cobbler:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Put 8 Tablespoons (1 Stick) butter in deep baking dish and place in oven to melt. Mix 1 Cup sugar and 3/4 Cup self-rising flour; add 3/4 cup milkslowly to prevent lumping. Pour over melted butter. Do not stir. Spoon fruit on top, gently pouring in syrup. Leave out the syrup if you want a dry cobbler. Still do not stir; batter will rise to top during baking. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes.

I think the score is currently Deep Purple-5 Scorpions-4 Recipes-1, hey, who threw that in there? Just kidding, Jim.

Love the Scorps but Purple for sure. The DVDs I have of Purple are full of improv and jam sessions that are out of this world. I know the Scorps did it sometimes too, and I know they rocked the Monsters of Rock in 88, but for sheer power, it's Purple.

I'd have to go for the Scorps, nothing against Deep Purple, but the Krauts put out some terrific albums...Lovedrive, Animal Magnetism, Blackout, Tokyo Tapes etc, they were also one of the first metal bands that I got into back in the late 70's

Hey Mark,

I hope I'm not too late, but I would vote for Deep Purple. I don't know a tonne of Scorpion's but enough to make that choice. Deep Purple influenced a lot!

That's two more for Deep Purple and one more for the Scorps. That gives Deep Purple a 7-5 lead. That makes it possibly one of the closest battle of the bands I have had this year. I think Kiss beat AC/DC by a two vote margin in the very first battle of the bands. All of the others have been decided by larger margins.
