Soilent Green-Inevitable Collapse in the Presence of Conviction

Upon first listen the overall sound of Soilent Green's new release is somewhere between death metal and grindcore . However, once I was able to sit down and really focus in I realized that there was even more to this album. There are a number of down tuned parts squeezed in here and there. Plus some mind-numbing heavy bits that remind me of mid-80's Celtic Frost for a few seconds. The vocals don't stay in the same throat searing mode as many of other bands because the vocals on occasion slip in some parts that are actually coherent (gasp!). There is also a plethora of riffs throughout this disc, but it's just that everything is flying and spinning so fast that's it's a little difficult to soak everything in at first. The song structures are tweaked just enough that they are a little different from the pack. I think the change is that the structures are a little less rigid, but that slight change sets them apart. Listening to this album reminds me of when I was like five and would go running down this steep hill behind my parent's house.Everything was going fast and even though their wasn't a lot of control, it was just very exciting partially because of the energy and in part because you were not sure exactly how it would end. Fortunately this album is more enjoyable than skinning your knees or falling and whacking your head on the ground. "Inevitable Collapse" is a bit of a grower, but it's certainly entertaining enough to warrant additional plays. After a few plays is when I think it will strike most people that this album is more complex and more spectacular than it seems at first.
