Lord Mantis-Pervertor

Candlelight Records
2012

This is another promo that has been sitting around the headquarters of Heavy Metal Time Machine waiting to be review. Again looks can be quite deceiving. I half expected this to be vile black metal of some sort. Instead we get really vile and greasy sludge metal. Lord Mantis hail from Chicago and are comprised of bassist/vocalist Charlie Fell (Nachtmystium, Von, Von Venien), drummer Bill Bumgardner (Indian) and guitarists Andrew Markuszewski (Avichi, Nachtmystium, Von, Von Venien) and Greg Gomer. "Pervertor" is the follow-up to the horde's 2009-released Seventh Rule Recordings debut, "Spawning The Nephilim". The band's new album was put to tape with help from Sanford Parker (Nachtmystium, Pelican, Indian) and judging by the unholy and filthy sounds coming through my headphones he helped the group unleash some very personal inner demons. Vocalist Charlie Fell floats something between a hardcore rasp and a black metal shriek while the band just oozes perverted sludge metal that would corrode most stereo equipment. This is what I'd imagine Venom would sound like if they were a sludge metal band. Sludge fans who are looking for some newer material would do well to check out Lord Mantis.
