What's coming up?

Well, I hope you enjoyed live album week. Now it's back to normal to some extent. This week I hope to have the following out-

Reviews for:
Axtion-Look out for the night
Def Leppard-High and dry

Plus-
-Battle of the bands
-It came from Hit Parader (or maybe Circus this time around)
-Heavy Metal Memory
-The re-name game

Here's a question for you. Have you ever bought an album and not been too crazy about. Then maybe a few listens later it hits you and then you realize how good it is. For some reason it didn't hit you at first. Has this ever happened to you? If so then what album or albums was it?

For me I would say that these albums fit in that category.

WASP-The last command
At first I thought it was toned down too much from the debut. Then about three years later it hit me how much better the writing was than on the debut.

Van Halen-Women and children first
I liked it, but it always seemed to contain too many fragments and odd bits to really be great. Took me about eight years before it hit me as to how energetic the album was and the songs actually fit together pretty well.

Cinderella-Long cold winter
I dismissed it when I first came out then about four years later a friend was playing it and it sunk in. It was more about blues rock and classic rock influences and it sure was tight.

Dio-Dream evil
The departure of Vivian Campbell and the two not so great singles made my initial opinion of this album not too high. Years later I came to realize that the album was actually the shot in the arm that Dio needed. Craig Goldie's playing is sharp and vibrant. Probably my third favorite Dio album.

Long Cold Winter is one of mine, too. Same with Heartbreak Station, which I felt was too country-tinged at the time but then came to appreciate much more as time went on.

I'll also throw in Ratt's Out of the Cellar and Bruce Dickinson's Accident of Birth. Both failed to catch me for a long time but grew on me.

Hi, Mark. I was wondering if we could get out of the way, what you and I thought was wrong with Metal(Now and then), and where we would like to see the genre go. I have jumped into the subject head long with my Tool post, and I option you to counter and post a reply and your version on what you have hated about Metal and where you would like to see metal go. As you will see I have called out on the floor the overall wrong path taken by Metal in general, the easily deduced (and Dismissed) path of "Devil music" that metal seems to revel in. I truly belive we can generate some serious conversation on the subject of music. Maybe this will also clear up my distian for metal at large, and your lack of continuing to seek out newer more advanced forms(IMO) of the genre. Happy Posting.

David-I always liked Out of the cellar, but Reach for the sky might fall into this category for me.

Webpirate-I will take a look, but I may be too far out of the loop to be a fair judge. As you can tell most of what I listen to was done between say 1970-1994. I keep up on news of current goings on in metal, but not like I did in the 80's and early 90's.

Not to pick but why would you let go of what is to come and watch the genre shape into more than it was? While there is clear evidence of past genius, I see far too much crap piled on it to say Metal can stand on it's own. When even members of the bands look back on the times and music and say "Dam, we were high as hell",and "What were we thinking?" maybe it's time to look elsewhere for points to be proud of. I love LZ, Sabbath, early Ratt, and Slayer as much as the next guy, but I can't say that to the general public as expect awe and admiration for my choice, for right off I have to explain away the shit that comes to mind of everyone I say that to. I hate to be sterotypical, but I assure you they will be. Wearing face paint(make-up) and spandex has made a laughing stock of the genre, and I can easily see why many, myself inculded and look back on those years and cringe. Sides get split and like the 70's disco movement, people either laugh, or they are with you. Even you, a lover of the genre have been in those sitations where you were the focal point of the conversation, maybe laughed at for long hair, or wearing a metal T, as I was. But now I can point to Tool and say, Look asshole all that you were brought up to believe in is a house of shit, maybe you should shut up and sit the fuck down for who is the dumber one, me who walks his own path, or a fucking sheep like yourself?

I think it all boils do what the individual likes. I enjoy the music because it's the style I enjoy. I am that interested in the artist's opinion of what they did, I go by my opinion. I don't care what others say about the music I like. I only have to prove it to myself and that's all that matters. If others don't respect it, so what?

I see what you are saying Mark, I do. But alas I carry the weight of the world on my shoulders, and I am more than glad to fight the good fight with more tools rather than none or a limited few. I am a died in the wool Atheist, while I am not here to preach, or to belittle anyone who does not share my views, I can not help but point out the constant pressures religion has placed on the world and what I see around me. I hate that the music I listen to automatically causes people to dismiss me as this or that. Metal has gone out of it's way to shun religion as a whole for trying to limit them as artist, only being against something does not mean you have to go the other direction(Devil Music) when you can run along side of what irritates you and point out the hypocrisies in the thing that is trying to limit or silence you. I don't know, you listen to metal for the pure joy of it, I listen for what it stands for, just different sides of the same coin.

I took a lot of crap for the music I like at time, but I gave it back to and never backed down on what I like. Anyone that judges anyone for the music they listen is really narrow minded.
