Battle of the bands
There were plenty of glam bands pouring out of America in the 1980's and many of them were lame, talentless or unoriginal. However there were a few leaders of sorts. Here are two of the top ones.

For myself its GNR all the way, in alot of ways they transcended the LA glam scene while being a part of it. Musically they drew from a far wider palette than the typical Hollywood glam act, while being generally better musicians. When "Appetite for Destruction" hit in the summer of 87, it took off like a wild fire.
Motley Crue were among the early instigators of the glam metal era. Their first two releases "Too Fast For Love" 81 and "Shout At The Devil" 83 were heavier and generally more metal oriented than most in the LA scene, but they would lighten up with a more typical glam release in "Theater of Pain" 85. "Girls Girls Girls" 87 took a bluesier direction, while modestly improving their sound. And "Dr. Feelgood" 89 brought in Bob Rock and higher production values, and is considered by many to be the Crue's best release to date.
I still love the first two Motley Crue discs, but after that it's a lot of misfires. Dr. Feelgood is decent, but nothing special.
Appetite beats out anything Motley Crue did. The Use your illusions had more filler than needed, but there are lot of good songs mixed in to. I would have to go with G-n-R on this one.
guns n roses is my most hated rock band ever. axl is the worst singer known to man although a great frontman. i'll take the shout at the devil album over any gnr shit any day of the week.
and for the record, vince neil is one of the worst singers as well, just not as bad as axl.
Sean-I think Vince Neil's vocals worked well with those early albums. He has a unique voice although not a great range.
I think Axl is a great singer and a good frontman. Although the latter oftentimes depends on if he chooses to give a good performance or not. I think G-n-R saced hard rock in 1987 with Appetite at least for a few years. However they killed off their own careers or at least Axl did by not putting out an album when they still had an audience.
I'm a 'Too Fast/Shout at the Devil" era Motley Crue fan. I just never got into G'nR.
Look, we can all admit both bands have talent/ don't have talent.
It just simply comes down to taste and I like early 'Crue!
This is actually a really tough question. So tough that when I first saw this post a few days ago, I didn't even bother to answer it.
Hm... GNR or Crue? I think I would give the edge to GNR.
