Abigail Williams-Becoming

Candlelight Records
2012

Becoming what? That is the question I pose to Abigail Williams. What started out as a somewhat melodic black metal/deathcore project morphed into a symphonic black metal affair. And now we have what? A lo-fi and raw form of black metal? At close to sixty minutes in length "Becoming" is a challenge even for the most hardcore black metal fan. This mental exercise is not just depressing mood wise. No, that would be justified given the very nature of black metal. It is depressing how truly tiring the whole affair is to sit through. With vocalist/guitarist Sorceron (Reign of Vengeance, Aborted), guitarist Ian Jekelis (God Dethroned, Abysmal Dawn, Artisan) and studio drummer Zach Gibson (The Black Dahlia Murder) it isn't like you don't have the talent. That much is obvious. Instead that talent seems wasted as it is stuck behind a wall of tiresome black metal sludge. Wait, is it sludge or slime? Either word is fitting as this six-song album leaves a lot to be desired.

Seriously? You shouldn't review genres that you don't like or obviously know nothing about. This album is a masterpiece.

Anonymos-It's called a difference of opinion. I am sure if you keep searching you will find reviews that agree with the view you want and you can breath easier and allow your blood pressure to go down. Thanks for stopping by and increasing our hit count.

Ok, by your logic Anoymous I should have nothing to say if I ever here techno or hip hop since I know really nothing about either genre. In reality what you have here with Heavy Metal Time Machine is two life-long hard rock/heavy metal/thrash fans just letting the world know about albums and how they feel about them. I may not know every band in every genre and I never claimed to be an expect. What I am though is 38 and have been listening to and collecting music since I was 13-14. That includes punk, hardcore, ska, rock, classic rock, older country (Johnny Cash is the man!), hardrock, heavy metal, thrash, power metal, speed metal, death metal, industrial metal and even black metal. Throw in alternative rock, new wave, metalcore, classical music and even some rap like the Beastie Boys. Pretty diverse so it isn't like I have lived a life with my fingers in my ears!
