King of None is a riff-heavy & beer-fueled band from Finland that just released it's second EP, "Troubles by the Score", back on November 1st. The five-piece group, which is lead by emotionally-rich vocalist Miiro and (sadly) appears to be relatively-unknown outside of their home country, first hit the scene in 2015 with their self-titled EP. That particular recording was apparently "stoner rock 101 for beginners" whereas this gritty four-song EP is seventies rock and hard rock-infused stoner rock with depth and a great deal of integrity. For these self-dubbed "waster rockers", "Troubles by the Score" is the right sound to get them noticed by not just fans, but proper A&R reps. Seeing as their new EP is a name-your-price download, King of None should have little trouble reaching either party....

Saturday Singles: The Ragged Saints-"Pretending Diamond"

Issued back in June of 2015, "Pretending Diamond" is the most current release from Finnish classic hard rock band The Ragged Saints. Members include Markku Kuikka (lead vocals), Tomi Julkunen (guitars), Toni Bite (guitars), Jukka Hoffrén (bass), and drummer Miikki Kunttu and yes, this is the same band that gave us "The Sound Of Breaking Free"*. Formed in 2011, The Ragged Saints hail from Helsinki and they are one of those rare bands that have managed to effectively combine elements of classic rock, radio rock, eighties hard rock, and melodic heavy metal into something absolutely magical! With a new album reportedly in the works there is still hope that the world will catch on to just how good this group is! Meanwhile a cool number like this should give fans a bit of cheer even if it does make you long for more...

Jess and the Ancient Ones-Castaneda

Due out November 14th, "Castaneda"  is the latest release from Finland's Jess and the Ancient Ones. Available as a digital download and on 10" vinyl only, "Castaneda" features two exclusive songs in the form of the title track and "As to be With Him". Combined these two tracks run just over 11 minutes long and for this female-fronted occult rock band it's once more all about the psychedelic scene of the sixties and early seventies! Having covered both their 2012 debut (http://metalmark.blogspot.com/2012/09/jess-and-ancient-ones-jess-and-ancient.html) and last year's EP, "Astral Sabbat" (http://metalmark.blogspot.com/2013/02/jess-and-ancient-ones-astral-sabbat.html), "Castaneda" is by far the strongest material of the lot. More consistent and original than previous recordings, "Castaneda" finds a unified Jess and the Ancient Ones growing as musicians and songwriters while playing up to their own strengths and natural abilities. And frankly-speaking that is nothing short of marvelous!

Graveyard Shifters-Brainwashed by Moonshine

"Brainwashed by Moonshine" is the five-track debut EP from Kerava, Finland-based Graveyard Shifters. Formed in the fall of 2013 by lead singer J. Matilainen and drummer/percussionist/backing vocalist A. Salmenoja, with V. Vainionpää (guitars and backup vocals), H. Kansonen (guitars) and J. Sumkin (bass and backup vocals) rounding out the current line-up, Graveyard Shifters list the likes of Mötley Crüe, Disfear, AC/DC, Kvelertak, Motörhead, Napalm Death, The Hellacopters, Skitsystem, Turbonegro, Satyricon and Nasum as influences. Crust punk 'n' roll is what they (Graveyard Shifters) call it, but with band's like Motörhead, Mötley Crüe, AC/DC and The Hellacopters showing up shit-faced drunk to the party and all ready to play "Old Time Rock and Roll" there's plenty of love to go around for punks and bangers alike! With it's inspirational title, "Chicken Cage of Terror" opens the show and from there on out all bets are off as this five-piece band takes the "savage sounds of rock, punk, punk 'n' roll and metal" out for a midnight stroll under the stars and into the minefields! For a debut EP this one packs a wallop with Graveyard Shifters looking to be another Finnish band to keep an ear out for! 

Crimson Day-Crimson Day

Formed in 2010, with the group's first moniker being Stone Rose before a change to SpeedInk in 2012 and then (apparently rather recently) turning towards their current name, the Finnish band Crimson Day just released this 6-track back in mid-December of 2013. Melodic heavy metal/rock might be the best way to describe this lot who, from what I've been able to gather online, also had a bit of a shake-up (line-up wise) this past year with new lead vocalist Valtteri was drafted into the fold. Along with guitarists Jyri and Ari (one of which is also new to the band according to the group's short Facebook profile), bass player Jesse and drummer Tuomas the group's new lead vocalist makes a heartfelt attempt to bring more attention to the Finish heavy metal/hard rock scene. Note the word "attempt" as this short, self-recorded and self-released, 6-track EP, which for some reason has an intro called "Prelude to Oblivion" flowing directly into the track "Into Oblivion" (a bit more variety would have been nice), doesn't exactly add anything to scene or break any new group. Instead it just is what is is. Nothing more and nothing less. While it's admittedly not a bad EP or anything like that, as the band appears to have to have some solid skill sets at their disposal, it never strives to be anything other then just average. Maybe with some stability (name-wise and line-up wise) this five-piece might be able to provide a bit of a spark to the scene. For now though I'd suggest spending a bit more time ironing out some of the wrinkles (and maybe doing a shot or two of enthusiasm) before hitting the studio again.

You'll have to forgive me when it comes to this one folks as there's very little information to be found within the confines of this promo's (brief) notes or, for that matter, online. That said here is what I do know. Besdies being celebrate for his outstanding artwork (of which samples which can be found online) Heikki Hautala is a member of the noisy punk-rock outfit Sokea Piste and "Pyövelin Vaatteet" (roughly translated as "Executioners Clothes") is his first (?) solo release. Despite the album's ghastly album art this is actually more in tune with natural, almost-organic, folk music. Recorded on a 4-track recorder (remember those?) in the woods of Kuru, Finland this release is surprisingly down to earth and very easy to become transfixed with. On a side-note everything is sung in Finnish I believe so, from the stand-point of an English-speaking gentlemen such as myself, it's more a matter of simply embracing the peaceful and enchanting tones of  "Pyövelin Vaatteet" then breaking-apart the lyrical nature of this recording. Even so, as peaceful and relaxing as this release was for me on a personal level, there is still an undeniable sense of sadness woven within these tracks. It's as if the narration speaks of some unseen horror that lies just beyond this world's comprehension. Whether it's a situation where we simply cannot see such misery or we choose to turn a blind eye toward it is a matter of interpretation. Either way this is a refreshing change from what usually finds it's way into my "To Review" pile and a release that warrants further listens.

The Ragged Saints-The Sound Of Breaking Free

There are "rock" albums and then there are albums that "rock". The Finnish collective known as The Ragged Saints fall into that second category with their new 11-track debut-album "The Sound Of Breaking Free". Having laid the ground work with their 2012, 3-track promo, which was also called "The Sound Of Breaking Free" and included not only the title cut, but tracks "Don't Let Me Go" and "While The World Is Burning", I was well-prepared for the notion that this release would be special, but even I could not have foreseen just how good the group's full-length debut-release would be! Formed back in 2012, with the idea of forming a band coming after the band's two guitarists, Tomi Julkunen and Toni Bite (Twilight Ophera), attended a Whitesnake concert, the band would become a reality with the addition of bassist/seasoned veteran Jukka Hoffrén and drummer Miikki Kunttu. The last piece of the puzzle came in the form of lead vocalist and Status Minor front-man Markku Kuikka (Kenziner/ Book of Reflections/ex-Grönholm/ex-Thaurorod/ex-TorneD) whose soaring delivery and stellar showmanship would put The Ragged Saints on the fast-track to stardom! With influences such as Cinderella, Ratt, Whitesnake and Def Leppard playing a part in their early development The Ragged Saints, who also released the track "The Sound Of Breaking Free" as a digital single, had a sound going for them that captured the finer moments of classic hard rock. With the new album though there has been a natural progression and while they were once solely identified as a Whitesnake-like band, which translated means that they indulged the listener's appetite for melodic hard rock at it's best, the new album also finds the band tackling everything from heavy rock ("New Beginnings") to modern AOR ("A Place Where I Belong"). As I first listened to the album I must admit that it seemed as if it was every other song that was really good. The title cut opens things up and it sounds as if the band gave it a spit-shine as I didn't recall it being such a epic rock number! But then it was "A Place Where I Belong" which, at least during the first run-through, came off as good but nothing special. Track three, "Don't Let Go", came up and it was back to killer rock for The Ragged Saints with track number four, the AOR-like "I'll Never Give Up On Love", again coming off as good if nothing special. So yes, I had the fear that this would be one of those records where half of the songs were really cool, but with the other half being, well, decent. But, something happened after track number five, "Love Won't Fade Away", finished up. Suddenly the album gets up and just runs away. The Ragged Saints tore through tracks six-eleven like they were the saviors of rock and roll sent from God himself! At that point I decided to "spin the record' a second time, which was followed by a third time and then forth time (all of which took place yesterday!) and it dawned on me hat stylistically The Ragged Saints were like bands such as Heart, Fleetwood Mac, The Rolling Stones and the Scorpions who wrote their material around the idea of creating a "rock album" and not just "rock singles". So, while there are some cuts that stand out more then others (the excellent "Never Walk Away" being a good example), it's the fact that the album serves as a total-package which makes it so special. Overall there are 11 tracks which do cover a lot of ground from classic hard rock to traditional rock and yes, even AOR, but taken as a whole this is a hell of an album and the sign of mature musicians who just get it. With album number one now out of the way, which (for the record) will be released towards the end of October, The Ragged Saints now can set their sites on new challenges like bringing their music to everyone everywhere.That said, will this Finnish 5-piece be able to capture the attention of both European and American audiences with their debut-album? Seremonia-Ihminen

Talk about perfect timing folks. Finland's Seremonia will be releasing their second full-length album, "Ihminen" (Finnish for "human"), just in time for Halloween!  All of you ghouls and goblins should appreciate that fact and embrace this release with open arms. Instead of being candy for the kiddos this Halloween treat is for all the grow-ups who have outgrown the costumes, but still long to celebrate All Hallows' Eve. What makes this album such a treat? Let's take a magic carpet ride with this female-fronted band and find out. Seremonia (Finnish for "ceremony") rely on the unearthly combination of (heavy) psychedelic rock (late 60's/early 70's style), prog rock, doom metal and proto-punk to do the "talking" as their uniquely-flavored rock is sung entirely in their native language! That need not be a problem though as evident on "Ihminen". The lead vocals of Noora Federley give the band a haunting and slightly ghoulish quality. Hence the Halloween association. But, to peg them as just a "seasonal" band would be a wicked crime as this band's creepy brand of psychedelic rock is easily something to be enjoyed all year long!  Now, the group's lead vocalist Noora Federley is cool and all (she has more of a raw, real garage rock and roll style going on) it's doubtful she could sell such acid-soaked rock all by herself. That's where a skilled band comes into play. You have Teemu Markkula who handles it all (or so it seems). He plays electric and acoustic guitars, delivers the goods thanks to his use of the synthesizer and (finally) provides backing vocals as well! That sounds like a lot right? Well, the guys that back up Noora are as good as they come! In addition to Teemu Markkula you also have Ville Pirinen (electric guitars, synthesizer and backing vocals), Erno Taipale (drums, flute and guitar) and last, but certainly not least, Ilkka Vekka  (bass and synthesizer). All of these fine gentlemen, with maybe the exception being Teemu Markkula, are veteran heavy metal musicians. The thing is the list (of who's who and where they played before this band and where they are also currently playing) is way too long to type up! As such I'll just leave that part as homework. If you are really curious just hit up the Metal Archives and they'll have all the info you need (and then some) as it's all spelled out there. Meanwhile this band, and their often fuzzy delivery, just rocks on and on and on and on. That's a huge amount of rocking I know, but that's the one thing you'll definitely take away from this Finnish group. They know how to keep things rocking even if the music throws in the occasional curve balls like Erno's spacey flute parts. Why it is that I always think of Jethro Tull, or more specifically Ian Anderson, when I hear flutes in rock music I do not know. Either way the flute playing here is cool while also different. It fits their style though so Seremonia knows how to make it work just like the rest of their instruments. Back to the album we should, or really must, go and it's worth mentioning  that after it's all said and done you might walk away from this album a bit hazy from all the smoke (if you know what I mean) and lost since your concepts of space and time have been thrown to the curb! First of all smoke-engulfed acid rock does that, but introducing some slightly ghoulish doom to the mix results in a serious head rush! On one hand Seremonia are one of those bands where it feels like you're having a flashback through space and time. That's cool and all, but what's funny is that while this same music invokes another time and what not it also has enough of a modern quality that it never feels as if it's out of place on today's stage. So, while you explore a band that is obsessed with the sounds of acid rook and 70's doom, which this band has down pat, you can simultaneously add this album to your upcoming Halloween playlist and make your party a serious happening since this album also comes packed with some fresh new rock riffs!  Everything about this band and album I love. And yes, that includes the skeleton on the cover which reminds me of the great Mexican rudo La Parka! Does that mean that I am possibly looking at another addition to my year-end best-of list? That might very well be the case.

Hebosagil-Lähtö

Something compelled me to check out "Lähtö" and boy am I ever glad that I did! The latest "full-length" from Finland's Hebosagil is 8-tracks long, but with a mere run-time of 26 minutes it's the old "in and out" these young "rockers". Sung entirely in Finnish, which does not prove to be a problem at all, this is the sound of anger as only a band with both Slayer and The Melvins (and not to mention Unsane) in their promo material can attest to. Even so this bunch isn't just part Slayer, part Melvins and part Unsane as this material is presented in the form of hardcore heavy metal sludge...or something like that. Picture not only the three acts above going at it in a bloody fistfight, but then Eyehategod stops by to deliver a few kicks to the crouch. By the time it's all wrapped up and ready to go it's like you've just seen & heard an interpretative punk rock/crust number performed by the reincarnated members of Superjoint Ritual and The Butthole Surfers.  This is one act I need to work my way back on as this new release hints at a more then promising back catalog!

Räjäyttäjät-Awopbopaloopop Alopbam RÄJÄ!

Räjäyttäjät, which supposedly means "Detonators", are a 3-piece rock 'n roll/punk rock n' roll outfit from Jytäskylä, Finland. Formed at the start of 2011, with their early releases ("Räjä & Roll All Night Long" and "Jytä Menot Päälläwere") being issued on cassettes, the band features in their ranks Rapa (lead vocals, guitar), Sisse (bass, vocals) and Muuni (drums, vocals). Somewhere between Iggy Pop and The Stooges, The Ramones, The Monkees, Die Toten Hosen and MC5 is where I envision this group falling, but the band is also said to be influenced by a couple of  80's northern rock bands (Radiopuhelimet and Jolly Jumpers) as well as a Finnish form of rock from the '70s called Jytä. With those last couple of influences I'll just have to take their word for it as my knowledge of classic Finnish rock and roll is a wee bit limited. For the record the promo also lists such bands as Sleepy Sleepers, Popeda and The Hurriganes (all of which apparently play Jytä) along with the likes of Faust, Dr. Feelgood, ZZ Top and "the odd surprise attack of The Fall". OK. Again, that's probably all fine and dandy, but to these ears it's some old-school punk and a toke or two of classic rock and roll that keeps these three going on the right track. To makes things simple on everyone involved though let's just say that 3-piece act, who the Finnish music press apparently believe could be the saviors of rock 'n' roll (OK), plays garage-like rock n' roll or, as they call it in Finalnd, "Räjä 'n' roll". Yes, it's doubtful that any of that simplifies what lies at the core of Räjäyttäjät, but when it comes right down to it aren't bands like this playing a universal tune anyway? Perhaps Billy Joel put it all in perspective the best when he sang (in regards to all the different nuances that make up what we call rock music) "It's still rock and roll to me". Even if it's not so easy for someone like me to follow along with lyric-wise (as it rocks out to a different native tongue) it's still easy as all get out to embrace a band like this if for no other reason then their high-energy style. These three really get into the swing of things and you can tell their having some serious fun tearing things up track by track. If punk rock and roll is your bag or even if you just enjoy 60's laced garage rock then chances are you'll dig what these three are laying down.

Death Trip-Pain is Pain - The Complete Death Trip 1988-1994

There's a better then average chance that the name Death Trip brings up nothing but shrugs or looks of confusion. Truth be told even I had no idea who these guys were or what they'd be on about when I clicked on the link for this promo. Surprises like that can obviously be both good and bad. Whatever mystery that I had allowed to build up inside of me (in regards to what sort of sonic sensation I would lay witness to) simply washed away as the music kicked in. Any expectations I had about this compilation just didn't matter as the music had swallowed me whole. What Death Trip did was quite simply and yet completely complex. Built upon a solid foundation of fuzzed over and wonderfully distorted guitars (courtesy of influences like The Stooges, The Birthday Party, and Spacemen 3) is a top level that splits time between gothic metal and the early stages of dark metal. This Finnish group helped pave the way for many underground groups in the homeland as well as being a sensation all there own. This compilation gathers Death Trip's three 7" singles (originally released on the legendary Finnish indie label Bad Vugum) and rare demos in order to create a set of explosive, post-punk in nature, violent rants/tracks. Within music that is dark, disturbing and dangerous you find a band that had set out to destroy rock and roll and rebuild it in their own graven image. At it's very core these tracks offer up revolutionary punk-tinged metal that is hostile while also offering up hope for a generation that often felt hopeless. It's not for the faint though as this LP is track after track of built-up frustration and pain so when you listen in to the despair at hand it's all too real. Still, there's something very therapeutic about music that spills it's heart and guts all over the floor. So yeah, any expectations I had about this compilation simply didn't matter in the end. For you see, what laid behind me was music that achieved so much in such a little amount of time. It had made me feel like I was drowning in a sea of darkness and yet, in a very surreal fashion, it had made me feel free as if it were ministering to me. This one is indeed dark and yet it has it's own inert power.

Soulhealer-Chasing The Dream

Finland's Soulhealer have come a long way since forming in 2009. While their last release, "The Kings of Bullet Alley", was a self-release, which I covered, the group now is signed to Pure Legends Records. A word of congratulations is in order for this 5-piece group. With album number two now here (there was also an EP released in 2010 called "Dreamcatcher") the band has added another notch on their belt. Being lead by a talented vocalist like Jori Kärki obviously helps, but the rest of the band are no slouchers either as evident by the 10 tracks on album number two. When done right melodic heavy metal can be fun and adventurous without being too light or fluffy. With guitarists Sami Mikkonen and Teemu Kuosmanen laying down fantastic leads, and a talented new rhythm section (bassist Pasi Laakkonen and drummer Jani Nyman) keeping the pace, this new Soulhealer album is justly-titled. With "Chasing The Dream" it certainly seems as if Soulhealer are living their dream of becoming a top-notch heavy metal outfit!

Cardinals Folly-Strange Conflicts of the Past

Cardinals Folly are a Finnish heavy metal/doom metal band. This is a collection of all of their early, out of print material arranged in one simple package. The band is lead by bassist/vocals Mikko Kääriäinen who, in addition to being the main songwriter/lyricist for Cardinals Folly, is the only remaining original member. Mikko Kääriäinenand is a former member of  Whorrornight (interesting name for a band eh?) and he also plays with black metal band Sathyricorion where, incidentally, he is known as Lord Santhyr. Alongside Mikko is guitarist Juho Kilpelä (who also plays with thrash/death band Intervention) and drummer Sebastian Lindberg. Sebastian Lindberg has played in indie rock band Murmansk and is also a visual artist. Just an FYI. As stated this collection gather's together a ton of material that was out of print. The track listing is as follows:

The first three tracks are from the 2008 "Heretic´s Hangover" EP. This was the first release for the band under the name of Cardinals Folly and is fairly solid heavy/doom metal. Prior to that, 2004-2007 to be exact, the group was known as The Coven. Track number 4 was actually featured on The Coven's 2006 demo, "Beltane", but this is a unreleased, re-recorded version with the Cardinals Folly line-up that was done in 2008. The "new" version of "Serpent Nights" is reportedly longer (I didn't check the details out for myself sorry) then the old one. Either way it's a cool song. The next 4 tracks are from the long out of print 2009 EP, "Orthodox Faces" which was originally well received in the doom community and it's easy enough to see why!. My favorite of the bunch is "Blood Axis Raider". It's a psychedelically-charged doom rocker that is evil spooky. Simply cool. Track number 9 is another unreleased song. "The Model" is Kraftwerk cover and a quite interesting cover at that! It's quite a different take on the song as Cardinals Folly takes this one-time electronic track and gives it a health dunking in Black Sabbath! And then we finish things off with another unreleased track in "Transmission From the Mad Arab". Again, it's some pretty cool doom material even if it is slightly off-kilter and, at under 2 minutes in length, way too short! Thankfully 10 minute plus tracks like "They Found Atlantis" make up for it. All in all this is a nice collection especially if you're looking for something "different" from the regular 9-5 doom. The only down side is that either Mikko Kääriäinen sounds really wicked and sinister ("Serpent Nights"and "Blood Axis Raider") or just "off". The first few tracks actually had me disappointed as I didn't like his singing, but it seems as if maybe he was just having a bad day or something then as I liked him more as the album moved on. The band certainly has their own take on the doom genre and I like that they were not afraid to twist and turn their own material around.

Known for their legendary 1987 debut EP, "Maailmanloppu" (reissued on Svart Records) this Finnish act cam together in 1982, "the year of the big Finnish hardcore punk explosion', as their promo puts it. While not the first Finnish hardcore punk band, as that honor would most likely go to Terveet Kädet ("Healthy Hands"), and despite releasing next to nothing (as far as recorded material), this band maintained a cult status within the scene. It goes without saying that hardcore punk, just like heavy metal, is universal in it's approach. That holds true no matter what language it's sung in. Terveyskeskus, which means "Community Center", offer up for public consumption a short, but ever so sweet, this 11-song album. It's the band's first new material in 20 or so years and, without missing a beat, it's just as raw and real their 87' EP. "Omat koirat puree" ("Your own dogs will bite you") is classic hardcore punk in the truest sense possible. The songs are furious and fast, like little bursts of pent-up rage, and come whirling out at you like a Molotov cocktail! The energy level is nothing short of insane on this 11-song sonic ear assault. It's really quite simple. This is just classic hardcore punk from a classic, if more cult then anything, hardcore punk band.Give Svart Records some credit as they have managed to add a lot of unique bands to their roster over time with Terveyskeskus being yet another check mark in their column. This one reportedly has a very limited run as it's a12-inch vinyl LP. You snooze on this one and, sure enough (just like the fact that the sun will eventually shine in Ohio over the next 12 months), you'll lose out. You'll lose out big-time. If classic hardcore punk gives you a reason to keep on keeping on (an why wouldn't it?) then this Finnish band needs to find it's way into your personal collection at any cost.

When any promo states that a band is "Heavily influenced by Scandinavian Metal like OZ, HEAVY LOAD, GOTHAM CITY and plenty of NWOBHM bands" chances are I'm going to like it. Sure enough this two-track EP is prime, old-school heavy metal with enough of a "I just found this dusty old single buried in the back of some record store and it looks as if there are only about a dozen copies that saw the light of day" appeal to make me feel like a giddy kid in a candy store! Gotham City meets Heavy Load meets any/every NWOBHM act that managed to release only one single is how I would describe this offering and I mean that with the greatest of respect. This one does not so much sound retro as it is retro. Somehow/someway this little beauty feels like 1981/1982 which is obviously odd since this it came out in 2012 and the "act" is only a few years old (2009). This Finnish sensation is sure to appeal to the old school crowd....and I mean REALLY OLD SCHOOL.
