Interview with Stiletto Farm

Stiletto Farm. I love them and so should you. 

Especially seeing how much their full-length debut 

album, "January Sales", kicks major ass! I want 

to thank the guys for talking with us today and 

(if you haven't already) be sure to check out my 

review of the band's (very cool) full-length debut 

below!

Andy: For our readers who might not be all that 

familiar with your band would you please introduce 

yourselves. Whose who in Stiletto Farm?
 
Stel: I'm Stel, I'm the bassist and singer.
 
Davyd: I'm Davyd, I'm the guitarist.
 
Newt: I'm Newt, I'm the drummer.
 
All: And together we are STILETTO FARM!
 
Andy: Stiletto Farm is "the last wish of a dying 

friend". If it isn't too uncomfortable to talk about 

could you tell us the story behind that 
statement?
 
Stel: Sure, it doesn't make us feel uncomfortable 

at all. The fallen friend is a guy called Jason White. 

He was a mate Davyd and I used to hang around with. 

He came up with the idea for this band. We planned 
the whole thing out together quite meticulously, 

despite the fact that none of us could play anything. 

His death came without warning and scared the shit out of us. 

Obviously there was only one reasonable course of action 

after that ...Learn to play, take on the world, get 
revenge!
 
Davyd: Jay was one of those people who could entertain 

a room without even trying, a true rock star!! Of course 

the only logical thing for Stel and I to do was keep on 

rocking for him. And we play so loud that 
I'm sure he can hear us wherever he is!
 
Andy: Musically what influences Stiletto Farm as a band?
 
Stel: Anything and everything, even things we totally hate! 

Even a crap song can have a chord transition or something 

you like the sound of ...and then you can swipe it! Hooray!
 
Davyd: We all have a massive range of inspirations. 

If it can make you move then it'll influence us.
 
Stel: But mostly Cliff Richard!
 
Andy: And as individuals?
 
Stel: Anything delivered with conviction, I wanna 

hear something that makes me believe that they believe it. 

You can't go wrong with Motorhead (Andy-You got that right!) 

or early Manic Street Preachers. Also I've got a real soft 
spot for the old Kings of Rock 'n' Roll, Little Richard and 

Elvis Presley. You can't beat that stuff.
 
Davyd: Motorhead runs through mine and all of Stiletto 

Farm's veins, but give me some Backyard Babies or 

The Wildhearts with their killer riffs and vocal harmonies. 

On the flip side give me some ear bleeding shredding 

and brutal drumming from the likes of Black Label Society or 
Pantera, I love it all. Though I can't forget the band's 

who first inspired me to pick up a guitar like The Beatles, 

The Who, Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters. Without these guys,where 

would rock be?!
 
Andy: Nowheresville! That's where! You are so right. Without

those early bands/artists (along with The Rolling Stones)

rock ass we know it just wouldn't be the same. 

Newt: I think for me personally stuff like Motley Crue, 

Skid Row.. etc... Old 80's rock/metal, its always been my favourite 

and helped me develop my drumming style to more of a personal one. 

But I'm also into my blues rock purely because of how sweet 

it all sounds! I'm pretty easy going, as long its none of that 

fake crap you hear on the radio!
 
Andy: I agree. Thankfully you can usually pick out the fake

crap from a million away! Otherwise (and again, this is one thing

that I really love about your band!) it sure as hell seems as

if all of our music collections have a similar flow. But anyway,

the 2012 single "Decimation Baby" was your first 

release correct? It must have seemed a bit surreal 

re-recording it for your full-length debut album. 

I mean you've come a long way!
 
Davyd: There was a little deja vu re-recording it, 

but from listening to the original and knowing it 

could be better it was a blessing in a way being able 

to do it justice this time and make it a real 
ballbreaker of a track.
 
Newt: I wasn't in the band when it was originally recorded, 

but I took a go at changing it up a bit, making it into 

something different so when we came to re-record it, it came 

back with the punch we wanted, and I bloody enjoyed doing so!
 
Stel: We reluctantly released the original in 2012. 

We weren't happy with how it turned out, but we 

needed something out there. It was a real boon to redo 

it bigger and better. The new version 
makes the old one sound weak as piss!
 
 
Andy: I'll agree to that. The updated take sounds beefier. 

There's more of an edge to it. You had the technology to 

rebuild it and you did. Kind of like the Six Million Dollar

Man! LOL! Back to the album though.

Besides the more obvious numbers what songs 
were written specifically for "January Sales"?
 
Stel: 'Dead To You' and 'Princess' were the songs 

we cobbled together just before going into the studio. 

We had a lot of ideas for extra guitar parts and 

keyboards and stuff for those songs, they were written 
to be played in the studio. The other songs were 

written with the live performance in mind, but we 

were always aware that they would have to 
fit on an album together at some point.
 
Andy: How has the reception been for the new 

tracks from fans?
 
Stel: Other than yourself and a select few others, 

nobody has heard anything yet. The album will be 

released early October. That said, we did release the 

song 'Adrenaline TV' as a little sneak peek and the 
reception to that has been overwhelmingly positive. 

I think people are surprised at how much better than 

our last single 'Bad Reception' it is.
 

Newt: My Mum likes it! 

Andy: Hey, as long as Mom is happy that's all that 

matters anyway! LOL!

Andy: So, tell me about "Princess". As I don't have 

the benefit of having a lyric sheet in front me could 

you break it down for us? It actually seems to be quite 

the departure from what (lyrically at least) lies at 
the heart of "January Sales"
 
Stel: 'Princess' is little uplifting number about 

how we live in a world that will allow someone as 

debauched as Nicki Minaj to show her face at the 

Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards. If I was a young girl 

in today's world, I would feel very lost and betrayed. 

The idea of doing a ballad was a bit of a risk for us, 

but we figured if we filled it with as much hate as 

the rest of the album we could pull it off.
 
Davyd: You know it's all gone to shit when little 

kids are singing Rihanna songs about s&m

and twirking along to Miley "chicken legs" Cyrus. 

Let kids be kids!
 

Andy: You're so right guys. Today's kids have to grow 

up way to fast and more and more if seems as if 

everything-TV, movies, magazine and music is 

overtly sexual. Like Davyd said, let kids be kids!

Andy: Staying on the topic of subject matter we have 

"Covered Bruises". Could you touch on this number?
 
Stel: Drugs, anti-depressants, self abuse, megalomania, 

and dragging yourself out of hell! All the good stuff! Haha!
 

Andy: Toss in some sex (for adults only kiddos!) and 

that sure as hell sounds an awful lot like rock and roll!  

Andy: One of the key things that I took away from an 

album like "January Sales" was how there was so much 

variety, musically-speaking. Was there ever a discussion 

about making "January Sales" as varied as possible or 
did things simply evolve in that fashion? Given your 

many influences I'm leaning towards the latter.
 
Stel: Lyrically we had an agenda. None of the lyrics 

deal with fantasy, they are all grounded in the real world. 

They all deal with some kind of harsh truth. However, 

musically it was pure instinct. It's just the 
way it naturally came out.
 
Davyd: The album just seemed to evolve over the last year, 

I don't think we ever said let's make a Punk song, then a 

Metal song, then a ballad. We just played and what you hear 

is what happened.
 
Andy: As you are smack dab right in the middle of it what 

is your opinion on today's rock scene?
 
Stel: There's a whole shit-load of these 'Metal by numbers' 

bands, bands playing it safe, because they know it makes 

money. Most record companies don't want to gamble, 

so the bands that get the recognition are boring as all 

hell! Also a lot of Hard Rock bands seem to be embarrassed of 

themselves, bands like The Darkness and Steel Panther. 

I get the feeling those bands are poking fun at themselves 

because they feel they have to. We got laughed out of 

town when we started, because we do what we do and we're 

serious about it, we didn't feel the need to turn ourselves 

into a 'joke band'. We just gave everyone the finger 

and carried on regardless. Not many bands dare to be themselves 

for fear of being torn down, It's a shame.
 
Andy: I cannot stand The Darkness and Steel Panther 

for that exact reason. What's more it just kills me how 

magazines like Metal Hammer just kiss their asses like 

they are the greatest thing every! Give me a break!

Davyd: Most labels are just too scared of originality. If it 

sold records last year, let's flog that dead horse this year! 

The amazing, original music seems to get left by the wayside.
 
Newt: There's a lot of good bands out there 

investing a lot of their own time and money into 

making music their career, but it all seems to 
be getting pushed out of the way by this 

new "Hardcore" scene which personally I'm not a fan of.
 
Stel: Basically, what we are trying to say is 

everyone is a smelly cunt ...except us! Haha!

Andy: I couldn't agree more! Haha!So tell me guys, 

what's next for the world's greatest rock and roll 

band? World conquest?
 
Stel: As soon as the album's out we'll be heading 

to the south side of England (we're northerners you see) 

That will be our first stop. Then I guess it all depends 

where the album does best when it comes to our 
next destination. We are looking forward to escaping 

the country though, that's for sure, haha! World conquest? 

Why not?!

Andy: Very cool. As an action figure collector I would 

proudly display your figures next to my Walking Dead, 

Star Wars, G.I. Joe and Universal Monsters ones!

Stiletto Farm-January Sales

Here it is boys and girls. Let me be the first to welcome you to the party that is Stiletto Farm's "January Sales"! This eleven track album is the cumulation of everything that is right about the rock and roll scene right now rolled up snugly into 42 minutes and 11 seconds worth of music and for members Stel (bass and vocals) Davyd (guitar) and Newt (drums) all I can say is well done lads, you've more than outdone yourselves! Featuring several numbers that I had previously fallen in love with ("Adrenaline TV",  "Strawberry Sundae Red" and "Decimation Baby") and a truck-load of new favorite moments ("Revenge", "Dead To You", "Covered Bruises" and, well, pretty much every other new song here!), "January Sales" not only continues the fine tradition of drawing upon this band's vast array of influences (everyone from Elvis to The Damned!) it actually one-ups the likes of Guns N' Roses, Mötley Crüe, Faster Pussycat and Poison in places! Those particular bands (as well as anyone else coming down the pipeline who might be looking to blend punk's "Don't give a crap!" attitude with classic rock's "It's all about the sweet licks ladies and gents!" outlook!) would do well to take note as this English trio knows exactly how to get it done! This album is a textbook example of how to get the best out your Dead Boys and Cheap Trick influences without resorting to dressing in drag like the twats in Poison! Furthermore there is no way humanly possibly that someone as lame as C.C. DeVille can claim that "Talk Dirty To Me" is the greatest punk rock song of all time when a number like "January Sales" exists! And yes folks, C.C. did at one point in time make that stupid ass comment, but to be fair how could he have possibly foreseen a cool as shit band like this trio? I know I sure as hell didn't! I mean here we are talking about a young band that could be punk's own take on Hanoi Rocks! Need proof? Try on "Charisma" for starters. That one's a real doozy! Wait, what is that you say? That's not enough for you? How about taking a stroll with the slick cut "The Redeemer" then? These two wicked little numbers pay homage to not only G N' R, Hanoi Rocks and Faster Pussycat, but punk bands that dared to break out of the same old song and dance routine. In a very real and very good way it's not just The Damned that a band like Stiletto Farm recalls, but two bands in which the late great Stiv Bators was involved, The Dead Boys and The Lords of the New Church. If you want to really get down to the bottom of what Stiletto Farms is all about then draw a straight line from those greats to this relativity young outfit. That speaks volumes about what this trio is packing talent-wise! But just in case you don't think this trio can get serious there's the number "Princess". Talk about a sucker punch! Unfortunately we all know that sex is used to sell everything these days and along the way it's selling out our youth. Here on "Princess" the band touches on the topic in sobering fashion. It's only after "Adrenaline TV" kicks in that you are shaken out of this cold brush with reality. Wow.  Anyway, "Strawberry Sundae Red" and "Decimation Baby" we're mentioned earlier and here on "January Sales" it sounds as if they have been given a tune-up as these too numbers rage! Straight-up rock and roll is what we're looking at and along with the album's "attitude is everything" closing cut, "So Yesterday", you're talking about swagger-worthy material that simply must tear the roof off of establishments when performed live! If they sound this good here on tape then why wouldn't they? Band's like Stiletto Farm are made for the live setting as is road-ready punk rock and roll music that explodes out of your speakers once you hit play on first cut "Revenge"! In case I have not been clear enough "January Sales" is a damn fine album and one that I'll becoming back to time and time again! Just as God gave rock and roll to you and I he gave us bands like Stiletto Farm to carry that beautiful message across the landscape for all to hear and absorb. So, if you find that your friends or family can't seem to appreciate the joy of real rock and roll anymore then simply slide "January Sales" out and tell them that they can thank you later!

Metal News: England's Stiletto Farm release "January Sales" preview track "Adrenaline TV"

"Adrenaline TV" is the latest single from English rockers Stiletto Farm. Taken from the group's upcoming full-length debut album, "January Sales", "Adrenaline TV" might have a short run-time (1:25), but it packs a serious punch with it's fast & fun take on punk rockin' heavy metal! Now, I simply loved the group's 2013 single, "Bad Reception"/"Strawberry Sundae Red", (review below) as well as their 2012 debut offering "Decimation Baby" (no review, but damn it's a cool banger anyway!), but both of those singles sort of pale in comparison to this new cut! Offered free at the link below (as are the other singles incidentally), "Adrenaline TV" finds this über-talented trio speeding through a three-way stop where Black Flag, Green Day and The Ramones meet to hang out and swap tales of glory and yes, it is more than a little awesome! If their long-overdue full-length debut is anywhere near as good as this single suggests then we could be looking at a sure-fire hit for Stiletto Farm! Madder Than A Full Moon Dog

Forget Bloodstock Open Air, the Download Festival or even the Sonisphere Festival. For my money there's only one festival in the whole of the U.K. that I now have on my bucket-list and that's the Full Moon Dog Festival! This 2013 film, which carries the fitting tag-line "A film more nasty than a dose of pox -- a 'moment in time' in British rock history", serves as a remarkable documentary of the 2012 Full Moon Dog Festival that took place at at The Cockpit venue in Leeds. This annual festival helps keep the memory of Asomvel founder/front-man Jay-Jay Winter (tragically killed in a road accident in 2010) alive while simultaneously highlighting some of the true heavy weights of the British hard rock and heavy scene and giving new, up-and-coming bands a chance to showcase their skills in a live setting. Directed and co-produced by the amazing Deborah Robinson (Winter's sister and the wife of Asomvel' guitarist Lenny Robinson) and featuring  live footage of not only Asomvel, but the one and only Orange Goblin, this documentary is filled with so much heavy metal goodness it's hard to know where to even start! As I just mentioned the live footage let's start there. Besides Asomvel (whose song "Full Moon Dog" was not only used as the title of this UK festival, but also opens up the live footage on this disc!) and the almighty Orange Goblin (who prove once more why they are true legends!) we're treated to live cuts from Mercenary, Dark Forrest, Eliminator and Stiletto Farm (just to name a few). Now, while the official trailer to this cool documentary calls this a "film that your parents will hate" I actually watched a good chunk of this film with my own teenagers and we all found something different to enjoy about it. When you stop and consider the fact that these are two teenagers who (these days at least) are more into Top 40 then rock music (I know, where did I go wrong?) then that says a lot about how well-constructed this documentary is! And with my 15 year old daughter now showing interest in the music of both Stiletto Farm (which incidentally feature's Deborah's oldest son Steven (aka: Stel) on guitars and lead vocals!) and Dark Forrest I consider it time well spent together as a family! Speaking of which, "Madder Than A Full Moon Dog" comes across as a real family affair not only in the sense of all of the various family members involved, but also in the way in which all of the other bands and the fans themselves come together to honor the memory of the late Jay-Jay Winter. There is an abundance lot of love and respect shown towards both Jay-Jay Winter and his band Asomvel and this documentary does a wonderful job of showing how much of an impact this sorely-missed musician had on everyone he came into contact with. That of course brings up another cool aspect of this film and that is the various back-stage interviews. It's a bit of a toss up as to which I enjoyed more, Orange Goblin's numerous backstage chats or the various cuts with Asomvel's own Conan. They both present different perspectives of Jay-Jay Winter's impact on the scene, but I'm actually going to give the nod of approval towards Conan as this (appropriately-nicknamed) big man/vocalist/bassist offers up great insight as to how Jay-Jay influenced him. This ex-Deathwing bassist turned formidable front-man is (more or less) the host of this whole event and if you thought he inspired fear and respect on Asomvel's latest release "Knuckle Duster" then you should hear him take full-command of Asomvel classic cuts like "Full Moon Dog" and "Stone Cold Stare" in a live-setting! Hot damn this guy is a mad beast on the mic! I've got no doubt that somewhere Jay-Jay Winter is smiling on in approval and content in the knowledge that his heavy metal brothers are carrying on the mission that he started so many years ago! Without giving too much more away (as there are more then a few neat surprises to be found within this documentary!) here is the track-listing for this DVD:

As I'm relatively new to the party that is Asomvel (I just discovered them this past year, but now have an overwhelming desire to acquire their whole back-catalog so any help from fellow fans/collectors in that regard would be greatly appreciated!) I can't really say they sound better then ever. Still, they absolutely killed it on their few live cuts as did Orange Goblin! Stiletto Farm are another band that just recently crossed my path (you can check out my review of their latest single at the link below), but their live cut, "Death before Dishonour", showed exactly why I find them to be one of the more new and exciting heavy rock bands out there! Mercenary, Eliminator and Dark Forest all prove more then capable of keeping the metal spirit alive and well and left me with quite the dilemma. How do I possibly go about adding all of these group's to my personal music collection without breaking the bank? And that definitely goes for Triaxis as well. Winning the "Where have you been all my life" award for best new female-fronted heavy metal band this UK-based act is lead by the stunning Krissie Kirby and provides further proof that "Madder Than A Full Moon Dog" is one hell of a cool DVD to add to your personal collection! Off-hand I can't think of anyway in which this documentary could have been made better although I do wish that the DVD set would have come with an optional digital download of the various live performances. That's a minor gripe though and takes nothing away from this fitting tribute to the remarkable Jay-Jay Winter. After watching this DVD I find myself more determined then ever to travel overseas. With the 2013 Full Moon Dog festival having just wrapped-up I now have a year to try to plan a trip over for the enviable 2014 event. Like I really needed another reason to visit the U.K.other then Dr. Who, but I digress! How I'll pull if off though is the real question, but with Asomvel and their extended "family" (Stiletto Farm and Stone Cold Kill) headlining the scene over there it's one journey that I'd move heaven and earth to accomplish! In the meantime I'll be doing my best to uncover new British hard rock and heavy metal bands to share with all of you our faithful readers and I wholeheartedly encourage everyone who loves British metal to check out this well-crafted documentary! Stiletto Farm-"Bad Reception"/"Strawberry Sundae Red"

"We are the propane kiss, the potent acid spray and we're burning it down, burn it all down. Decimation Baby". Those are the self-penned words of  Stiletto Farm and truer words have seldom been spoken friends. This UK-based 3-piece, having previously made their mark on the Europe's rock scene with their 2012, punk rock and roll/sleazy heavy metal single "Decimation Baby", are said to be "The last wish of a fallen friend...". In this case it's Jason White, the late friend of vocalist/bassist Stel, whose tragic death over a decade ago is still felt by all who knew him. This 2-track release is dedicated to Stel's former band-mate/friend and with the CD's suggestion to "Play Loud" (something you never have to tell me twice!) I sat back and took in what is indeed as fitting a tribute to a departed loved one as they come! Although the current incarnation of Stiletto Farm is relatively new* you would hardly be able to notice given the strength and intensity of this 2-track release. As Stel is up-front let's start with him first and then we'll take a look at the other two pieces of this hard and heavy punk rock(ish) act. Stel's street cred is on full display for all to see and hear on opener "Bad Reception". He comes across as equally qualified in both departments (as both a vocalist and bassist) and with his long time friend/band-mate Davyd (whose guitar playing bridges the same gap between punk and sleazy hard rock that band's like Mötley Crüe and Twisted Sister did back in the early eighties!) standing right by his side Stel gives off a commanding presence. The pair front another "young" band with nowhere to go but up as evident by the shear heart-attack, New York-infused**, rocker "Strawberry Sundae Red"! Together with drummer Newt, whose beats help to keep the pair from going too far off the "Crazy Train", Stel and Davyd take on the challenge of not conforming to life's expectations the only way they know how to. In this case that means keeping it all loud and proud! And on "Bad Reception" they do just that! On "Bad Reception" we find a band of brothers united in their desire to just let go and let it roll! Stiletto Farm, whose bio says that they are all about "Taking the best the past has to offer: Elvis, Twisted Sister, The Damned and everything in between", just do not conform to any set standards in regards to the style of rock music they choose to play. And of course that's a fantastic thing as rock and roll should never be forced to fit into a tiny box. It's supposed to remain dangerous and from the sounds of "Bad Reception" the gentlemen in Stiletto Farm get that! Are they punk rock or are they hard rock? Are they garage rock or are they sleazy heavy metal? Or are they all of the above and then some? I'd argue for the last point there, but whose to say for sure? Everyone will probably pull something different out of these 2-tracks and really that's fine. Actually, that's the way it ought to be when you listen to a band like this that offers up real rock and roll. ** Even though we're talking about a band from way across the pond and all (or at least for me folks!) the track "Strawberry Sundae Red" sure sounds as if it was conceived in and then born and raised in New York! It packs the same kind of energy and attitude of bands like Twisted Sister, Anthrax, Kiss and The Rods. It also helps the cause in regards to this group's claim of being "The most pissed off band in the world"!
