Children of the Reptile is a U.S. traditional heavy metal/epic metal band that has been active since 2009. Lead by vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist Ozzie Darden (ex-Death Machine Weapons, ex-The Disasters), this four-piece band is based in Wilmington, North Carolina and has two EPs and two full-length albums to it's name. Released in late-January of this year, the nine-track "The End" is the second full-length release from Children of the Reptile. It serves as the follow-up to 2016's well-received "The Four Weapons EP" and finds this U.S. metal band sounding better than ever! As with the group's last EP, "The End" features damn catchy material that should please not only long-time fans of the group, but anyone that appreciates true heavy metal. If your personal CD collection includes everything from Megadeth and Metallica to Thin Lizzy, Dio, solo-Ozzy, Manilla Road, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest then you are going to dig this outfit. You simply cannot go wrong when you mix Ozzie's tremendous vocal delivery with blazing guitar solo and the one-two punch that is this album's rhythm section! Having made their debut in 2012 with a 3-song EP, Children of the Reptile has grown into one of the most dependable metal bands out there. There is no reason why this band shouldn't be in your personal music collection and I have no idea why they are still unsigned! Just like the group's last studio album, "The End" is a A+ release in a day and age when far too many bands are just going through the motions.

Free Metal Monday: Knightmare-Wolves of Retribution

Active since 2010 (and not to be confused with all of the other similarly-named bands out there!),  Knightmare is a up-and-coming U.S. heavy/power metal band with two full-length albums to it's name. The forty seven minutes long "Wolves of Retribution" is this group's latest recording and it came out in late January of this year. For this Raleigh, North Carolina-based four-piece band it is all about (gritty and true) classic heavy metal with catchy choruses, blazing-hot leads, and epic overtones! Amazingly enough available for free by clicking here, "Wolves of Retribution" showcases a hungry heavy metal outfit that seems destined for much more than just local success. This is one talented American metal band that I would keep a close eye out for!

Interview with Alfredo Martinelli of Italy's La Bottega del Tempo a Vapore

Recently I had the pleasure of interviewing Alfredo Martinelli of Italy's La Bottega del Tempo a Vapore. I want to thank my friend Glenn from Mintotauro Records for not only making this possible, but for turning me onto this epic progressive rock/heavy metal band in the first place! Andy-Hey there, Alfredo.  Thanks for taking the time to talk to us about your band “La Bottega del Tempo a Vapore.”  I don’t speak Italian, and I’ve tried to come up with a translation of your band’s name into English.  What I come up with is “The Time-to-Steam Workshop”.  Given your bands progressive leanings, I imagine your band’s name is a nod to your country’s vast contribution to the prog-rock scene.  Can you tell us a little bit about how you came up with the name, and what it signifies?

Alfredo-I came up with the name for the band. In between developing musical ideas and organizing the band’s activity I suggested two band names: the second one was "La Bottega del Tempo a Vapore". Even if it's not a commercial/marketing rule-based name, it has the capacity to make people ask and think about it. Our musical approach is not common; we are something different from the norm, and we want to spread it out a bit. Moreover, we employee numerous different conceptual approaches that we think you’d find interesting. The Workshop (La Bottega) is something like "art and work", based on the concept of the Italian Reneissance, populated by Italy's  old masters, and a time when everyone was a significant part of the entire work. The present and future time (Il tempo) is a constant in our album. It's an important concept of life that flows. The Steam (Il vapore) is that natural element, deep as much as we can see it. It is able to generate strong forces, able to move trains, industrial machines, and, in the same time, to slip into each and every fissure.

Andy-On to the album.  “Il Guerriero errante,” or “The Wandering Warrior.”  Can you shed some light on the story that’s told for us? 

Alfredo-"Il Guerriero errante " tells the story of a samnitic warrior, who receives the responsibility to escort a Lady, engaged to the King, to the King's residence. The journey is characterized by adventures, ambushes and many events. Warrior and Lady bonded immediately, they are united by a strong sentiment and at last they fall in love. The King finds out about the secret relationship between the Lady and the warrior, instructs a Janara (samnitic witch) to avenge him with the damnation of the two lovers. There will be romance, adventures… but for all the details, you just have to listen to our CD.

Andy-As I mentioned earlier, Italy has made a vast contribution to the progressive rock scene.  Can you tell us how Italian prog rock has influenced you as a musician?  What are some other genres of music that have influenced you?

Alfredo-We are influenced by tons of genres and kind of music, as every prog band should be. Our influences could be summarized with Dream Theater, Liquid Tension Experiment, Porcupine Three, Opeth, Pink Floyd, Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, Premiata Forneria Marconi, Osanna, Epica, and so on. So genres like Prog Rock / Metal as a base, but also Epic, Orchestral, Folk, Psychedelic, Fusion and more.

Andy-Tell us about the band.  How did you form?  How long have you known each other? How did you meet? How has your music evolved since you first began playing music together?

Alfredo-I was looking for musicians to help transform stories into music, so that's where it all began. During the meetings we talked about the contents of various chapters and then we wrote the music and lyrics. A little bit later we added all the other members of the band. Most members already worked together in other projects, so we were all friends. Our artistic peculiarity is that our sounds, rhythms and arrangements are articulated and essential elements, with unusual lyrics.

Andy-Tell us a little bit about your experiences in the studio.  What were some of the challenges in recording such an intricate album?

Alfredo-The final recordings were so intense and needed concentration, which is why the final result of our work is characterized by honesty and consistency. At the same time, it wasn't easy to organize everything and contain costs. We considered our financial resources and managed everything firsthand. Edoardo Napoli from EPN studios of Genova oversaw the final mix and mastering, and he did a very good job, considering a great problem for us: work remotely. The power of Internet!

Andy-And finally one last set of questions. What are your rehearsals generally like? Do you have a set time each week in which you practice or are rehearsals more spontaneous?  Do all members of the band contribute to the song-writing process?

Alfredo-As regards the process of writing songs, there's not a fixed rule: inspiration is like a beautiful woman, who never announces her arrival. Certainly mys story inspired our music arrangements, but lyrics and vocal arrangements were made after the musical parts; these are peculiarities of our work. In our band all the members participate in the creation of arrangements. Alessandro did a great job for the production of this album.

Blizzard Hunter-Conqueror Of Destiny

Peruvian heavy/speed metal band Blizzard Hunter was first formed in 2006. Originally conceived as a Ozzy Osbourne tribute band and going by the name of Blizzard (with the Hunter part added only recently due to trademark issues) the group eventually made the move from playing other artists material to performing their own. With guitarist Lucho Sanchez (ex-Disinter, ex-Necropsya, ex-Bleed of Hate) leading the way Blizzard Hunter entered the scene with their first release entitled "Demo 2011". At the time of the demo's release the group was fronted by vocalist Mauricio Medina, but (along with changes to the drummer position) that has now changed seeing as Sebastian "Dragon" Palma (Lightning, ex-Morvidhen) has firmly taken hold of the mic and made it all his own. From this point forward it would be foolish of Blizzard Hunter to make a change. Just as the change from Blizzard to Blizzard Hunter will help them in the long run (as there are far too many bands going by that moniker!) so will the addition of this high-caliber lead vocalist who brings a sense of magic to the mix! As for the rest of the band? Besides Sebastian "Dragon" Palma and the aforementioned Lucho Sanchez the current version of Blizzard Hunter includes guitarist Toño "Wild Rocker" Rojas De la Cuba, bassist Lalo "Indú" Salas and drummer Daniel Ruiz de Castilla. On "Conqueror Of Destiny" we are treated to the same three songs that made up the group's 2011 demo, but it's highly likely that in additional to there being a different, more improved line-up going on with those three tracks ("I'm On My Way", "Ghost Rider" and "The Joke") the new EP features upgrades in both sound and style! That's just a guess on my part, but seeing as strong as these three individual tracks are here on "Conqueror Of Destiny" it would make little to no sense that they were this good before. Why? Well, logic would follow that if the past versions of these three metal gems were this powerful and epic then this Lima-based outfit would already be signed and working on their second or third full-length LP! As a music critic one has to be careful to not toss around or overuse the term "perfect", but in this case Blizzard Hunter's new EP there is just no other way to go about it! For Peru's Blizzard Hunter it's a matter of taking what they most love most (80's speed metal, traditional heavy metal, N.W.O.B.H.M. and even early progressive power metal) and then, by way of a lightning bolt of energy and enthusiasm(!), giving it a make-over so that the end result is an EP that finds all of those influential high-points loving nestled up to epic metal as well as both the European and American style of power metal. It really does end up sounding nothing short of glorious! And it most certainly makes Blizzard Hunter into a legitimate contender. There's little doubt that had this band come along in the eighties a release like "Conqueror Of Destiny" would be considered a classic. As it stands now it's a classic piece of recording and whether we choose to drag out American, European or Swedish bands to compare Blizzard Hunter to it would all end up being the same. These guys are great and "Conqueror Of Destiny" should make EVERY ONE'S best of 2014 list! Due to be released by Sarlacc Productions it is limited to 100 copies, but as a collector's item in the making it is well worth acquiring! Either way though you can't go wrong with Blizzard Hunter and with a rumored album in store for later this year/possibly 2015 this is one band that I'm betting will pay off huge dividends for the label that signs them to a long-term deal!

Norselaw-Kingslayer

The last time we checked in with Ohio's own (supreme lords of the underground metal scene) Norselaw (so named because of it's multi-talented front-man/musician!) we were treated to one of 2013's best album's in "Serpent In The Circling Sea" (http://metalmark.blogspot.com/2013/08/norselaw-serpent-in-circling-sea.html). Since then things seemed to be quiet...too quiet in fact (as those N.W.O.B.H.M. moments (by way of a noise-infused punk metal band) on said album were the stuff that heavy metal wet dreams are made of!) and I had almost given up hope on hearing from Norselaw (the man, the myth and the legend!) again. And then out of the blue I get a CD with a note from the band and my spirit is once more awakened! Up front Norselaw is Norselaw (vocals, guitars, bass and keyboards) and Jaime (drums) and "Kingslayer", which was mixed, mastered and produced by Norselaw(!), is just the latest in a string of well-received (if grossly ignored by the metal mainstream) releases. With "Kingslayer" Norselaw moves on from "Serpent In The Circling Sea" musically (if not even mythology-wise) by way of an (overall) darker essence which eventually bubbles over like some sort of primordial slime! With all sorts of (odd and yet captivating!) colors splashed across the sky "Kingslayer" offers up the likes of Raven, Venom, Cirith Ungol, Megadeth, Jimi Hendrex, Hawkwind, Black Sabbath, Manilla Road, S.N.F.U., Judas Priest, Butthole Surfers, King Diamond and Bathory over the course of this wildly-intriguing album! What's more those varies influences oftentimes come into play over the course of one song(!) and, in a few weird cases, it's like all of those different bands/artists are playing at the same time! It's true that at times it can all be a tad bit chaotic and that on more then one occasion I got the distinct feeling that it would all make more sense if I was to say, uh-hum, "partake" in recreation "activities". Not that I would do such a thing mind you (in case the NSA or, more importantly, Mom were to read this!), but for my readers out there if that's your king then this album could be your thing! For me though, clean-headed (if not necessarily sober!) this one smoked on it's own merits and with numbers that run well-past the 4-5 minute mark this was one album that threw down the gantlet and I early accepted it! File "Kingslayer" under all things METAL and all things HEAVY and by the gods of Heaven above and hell below play this BEAST like it was meant to be played-LOUD and "Kill 'Em All And Let The Reaper Sort 'Em Out!" PROUD!

Solstice (UK)-Death's Crown is Victory

Initially this was a digital-only release, but with Into the Void Records stepping in to offer it on CD (and, if I'm not mistaken, a limited run cassette tape while the band's own label, White Horse, pressed it on vinyl) it stands to reason that it should be greeted with welcoming arms from those that love epic doom metal! Tracing their roots back to 1990 (with a small break in the action having taken place between 2002 and 2007) and with founding member/well-traveled musician/exceptional guitarist Rich Walker (ex-Sludgelord, ex-Isen Torr, Solomon Kane, ex-Pagan Altar, ex-Napalm Death (live), ex-Bio-Hazard, ex-Discontrol, ex-Harmony As One, ex-Nailbomb, ex-Sore Throat, ex-Warfear, ex-Wartorn) having recruited some excellent players for "Death's Crown is Victory" such as vocalist Paul Kearns (ex-Arcane Sun, ex-Fifth Dominion, ex-Eden Obscured) and drummer James Ashbey (Cravel Idol and Deceptor) this EP ends up being well-worth the wait (this is after all the band's first new recording in 13 or so years!). It's also leading the race as far as comeback albums are concerned (even if, technically-speaking, this is only an EP with a run-time of 26 minutes or so it is still a strong contender for "Comeback Album" of the year for 2014!) and is another great new release that I hope to add to my physical collection before it's all said and done! Even if this recording is short and sweet (hey, just like this review will prove to be!) it still echos with excellence and comes across a grand exercise in all things doom-laded! With two short instrumental numbers serving as bookends for the nine minute "I Am the Hunter" and the almost ten minute title track (both of which are wicked in their own epic ways!) this four-track release makes one long for more new material from this UK behemoth so let us prayer that it isn't another ten year or so years before we hear more from Rich Walker and his new companions!

The Approach And The Execution Kickstarter campaign (Urgent Update!!!)

Cleveland's The Approach And The Execution The Approach And The Execution are looking for help in funding album number two. Faithful readers will no doubt recall that I have covered this excellent metal band in the past and have also considered them to be friends. As usually with these kind of  Kickstarter campaigns there are all sorts of goodies for those who can and do help out. Having heard some of the new material live I can tell you that it carries the same kind of spirit as album number one, "The Blood March". That being said, album number two for these Cleveland metal maniacs (with the working title of "Kings Among Runaways") should see the band move in a new, and more then likely exciting, direction as there has been some line-up changes between the release of "The Blood March" and now. On behalf on the band I'd like to thank everyone ahead of time for anything they can do to help fund this new album by possibly one of the nicest and most humble group of musicians I have ever had the pleasure of being friends with!

Interview with Fang VonWratenstein of Lords of the Trident

  

Just recently I had the pleasure of sitting down with Lords of the Trident lead singer/epic warrior Fang VonWratenstein. Up front I must apologize as I did dare to suggest that their take on metal was nothing more then a gimmick. How little I knew! Their quest is noble and just as I would find out and the battles were all too real and intense. While I did have to soldier-up and strap-on a huge amount of armor, which is just as heavy as one would imagine it to be, and arm myself with the sword and shield just to stay safe (as there are many who would love nothing more then to ambush these noble warriors) it was well worth it in the end! Andy-Thanks for sitting down with us to answer a few questions. Could you please give us a quick run-down on who everyone is in the band?

Fang-No problem! I’m glad you’ve donned the appropriate amount of battle armor to keep yourself safe during the interview. You wouldn’t believe how many people sit down to interview us in just jeans and a t-shirt, and end up melted into a small puddle on the floor by the end. The name’s Fang VonWratenstein, and I’m the group’s Lead barbarian vocalist. On lead guitar, we have the incredible samurai warrior Asian Metal, and on lead guitar, the undefeated gladiator Killius Maximus. On Lead bass we have the high priest of Death, Pontifex Mortis, and finally on lead drums we have the head of the executioner’s guild, Sledge Garrotte.

Andy-How did the band's name come about?

Fang-After forming the band, we drank a considerable amount of ale and spirits, and had a long fight over what we should call ourselves. Eventually, we consulted an oracle in Greece, who ended up divining the name. Originally, it was “Lords of the Trident Unite”, but that was too long, so we ended up dropping the “Unite” part.

A-What about the actual band? How was Lords of the Trident conceived?

F-That is actually quite a long tale! If your readers would like to hear the epic quest in its entirety, they can visit our webpage (www.LordsOfTheTrident.com) and select the “Bio” section. But I’ll try to sum it up for you. Essentially, I was born from a volcano full of molten metal (AND steel!) at the beginning of time, and my one and only goal was to find the greatest metal warriors ever to roam the earth. After many travels, I finally collected a band so fierce, that even Death himself decided not to join us. He did, however, send us his highest priest to play bass. But I digress. We took a break after the 1340 “Black Plague” tour because of the PR backlash (sorry Europe), and in the late 2000s Asian Metal and decided to go back to college to finish up our pillaging and barbarian studies degrees. It was there that we wrote and recorded our first album - “Death or Sandwich”.

A-What made you decide to run with the costumes and storyline?

F-I’m not sure what you mean by “costumes”...these are our everyday battle gear! What, you think we’d leave the house without armor? I’ll have you know that we live under constant attack by a shadowy multinational corporation called SPIDR, and to venture outside with everyday garb is just asking for an arrow to the chest. We HAVE been known to change into our “normal people costumes” from time to time in order to escape the large, rabid group of groupies that seem to appear at every show. Those harpies be CRAZY.

A-Even though some people might question the use of a gimmick (and admittedly I fall within that group) there's no denying the strength of your material. It sure sounds as if tried and true, real heavy metal runs through your blood. Other then some of the "bigger names" like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest who else has inspired your sound?

F-Although we’ve been accused of using a gimmick before, you’d be surprised at how many mortals we’ve converted into metalheads just by wearing our armor on stage. Sure, we could go on stage “in costume” - black shirt and jeans - to try and fit in with the other bands out there, but why deny who we truly are? And why be so boring? Besides, some people come just for the show, and end up enjoying it so much that they quickly turn into fans of metal! We had a maiden the other day say to us, “You know, I didn’t think I liked metal before I saw you guys, but then I started listening to some Iron Maiden and I realized I really like it!” That put a smile in this barbarian’s rage-filled heart. “Metal” is such a polarizing word, and there are so many subgenres out there. I think most people see or hear the word “metal” and they instantly think of scary, angry dudes with beards and long hair screaming and growling into microphones while they play as fast as they can on their pointy guitars. Mostly songs about how they hate their dad. That sort of thing. The truth is that there is so much more variety to metal than just that, and that a majority of the general public would truly enjoy the more “classic” metal sound that we play.

Wait...what was the question? Oh yes, influences!

Well, since we’re immortal, and formed the band at the beginning of time, you could argue that every band since has been influenced by our sound. But if I had to pick artists that we listen to and enjoy, I’d say Dio, Black Sabbath, Savatage, Dokken, Manowar, and especially Dream Evil. We also enjoy the more “modern” type of metal as well. We’re huge fans of Scar Symmetry, for instance.

A-Of course that brings up another question. Judas Priest or Iron Maiden? Which one would stand victorious in your mind?

F-That’s a very difficult question. Personally, for me it would be Maiden. I think most of the band would answer the same way. Two years ago we did an Iron Maiden cover set for Halloween, and this year we’re doing Judas Priest, so it’s a very timely question.

A-How about Black Sabbath with Ozzy or Black Sabbath with Dio?

F-Unmistakably Dio. Not sure what the rest of the guys think, but for me there’s no better metal singer out there.(editors note: I totally agree!)

A-Given the chance which "big" name band would you like to play with?

F-I’d love to do battle with Manowar or Dream Evil some day. I’m sure both bands would put up quite the fight, and I’m well aware of Manowar’s axe handling skills. It would be quite the lengthy battle! Of course, we’d all give our right arms to play with Maiden or Priest, but if we did that we wouldn’t be able to play very well, so that would sort of defeat the purpose, wouldn’t it?

  A-Are there any shows that stand out to you in your 5+ years with Lords of the Trident?

F-Absolutely! We’ve opened for some bigger names, including CAGE, 3 INCHES OF BLOOD, SKELETONWITCH, SLEEPYTIME GORILLA MUSEUM, PUDDLE OF MUDD, SALIVA, FUEL, and indie megaband OF MONTREAL. All of those shows were incredibly fun, but the Of Montreal one was just plain hilarious. Spraying my giant trident confetti cannon from between my legs on the front row of indie rock girls was something I’ll never forget. Recently we got to open for one of my favorite bands of all time - The Protomen, which is a band that plays rock operas based on Megaman. And in a few weeks, we’re opening for HELLOWEEN!

A-What can people expect if they have never been to one of your shows?

F-Fire, explosions, swords, confetti cannons, more fire, and the best music you’ve ever heard in your life. Take all the best experiences you’ve ever had in your life and try to condense them down into a 45 minute musical experience. That would be close to what we do during a live show.

A-Has there ever been a moment when you thought of dropping all of the extras and just going the blue jeans and heavy metal t-shirts approach?

F-We’ll have to save that for a KISS-style “Lords of the Trident: UNMASKED” episode of 60 minutes or something like that.

A-What's in store for Lords of the Strident for the rest of 2013?

F-We’re currently finishing shooting for our 3rd music video for “Complete Control” from Plan of Attack. Additionally, we’re finishing writing material for our next full album. We’ve got about 5-6 songs completely finished, and a few more in the works. Other than that, we’re releasing a few more t-shirt designs soon, and hosting some local battles in the Wisconsin area. After our recent tour, we’re enjoying some down time, writing songs and sharpening our blades for battles ahead.

A-Is there anything else you'd like to add that we haven't covered?

F-For those who are curious, the scaled leather armor that covers my shoulders are called “pauldrons”. No one seems to know this fact! THE MORE YOU KNOW! (We don’t have any pictures with my new armor on the site yet, so check the facebook page.)
