Double Experience-Unsaved Progress

Colfax Music
2016

Active since 2011,  Double Experience is a Canadian trio with three release to it's name thanks to the forthcoming "Unsaved Progress". Self-dubbed Nerdy Neo-Rock and featuring a solid line-up of Ian Nichols (vox, lyrics), Brock Tinsley (guitars, bass, lyrics), and Dafydd Cartwright (drums), Double Experience is also a band that answers one of life's oldest and most persistent questions. And of course that would be: "What would Fall Out Boy sound like if they were less emo and more rock?". What, you've never asked that question before? Am I the only one who has wondered that? Wow, who knew? Anyway, this is pretty much what you get when it comes to the quirky Double Experience and/or "Unsaved Progress". With eight original compositions and a fun cover of the B.O.C. classic "Godzilla", "Unsaved Progress" is an easy enough album to get into so long as you enjoy alternative rock & pop-infused heavy rock. Double Experience's new release has a due-date of April 8th and lest I forget, "Unsaved Progress" will be printed with classic video game-inspired packaging! That's rather righteous don't ya think? Well, at least it is to me. I grew up loving the video game culture and I now have the pleasure of watching my own children teenagers enjoy the same games that I did when I was there age! And speaking of my teens (or my family of three!), "Unsaved Progress" has a good chance at becoming a new family favorite thanks to it's catchy mash-up of pop rock, alternative rock, pop punk, power rock and heavy rock! While it might not appeal to all of our readers, "Unsaved Progress" still deserves a fair chance so if your musical tastes are a little more open why not give this one a shot? You've got nothing to lose....

Run 2 Cover-Lovesick

KBB Records
2015

Based in Phoenix, Arizona and made up of brothers Christian and Brandon Iverson (lead vocals and bass & drums and vocals respectively) and Colin Shaw (guitar and vocals), Run 2 Cover is a extremely talented modern pop rock/pop-punk trio that was first formed in 2010 and began life as a heavy metal outfit. "Lovesick" is the full-length debut from this 3-piece teenage band and this radio-friendly release was produced by Matt Good (From First To Last, Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows) at Good Sound Studios. Having played alongside the likes of Escape The Fate, Eyes Set To Kill, IM5, and Alien Ant Farm, Run 2 Cover has already amassed a loyal following and with each new date added that list seems to be growing at steady pace! Just going by this band's catchy debut here it's plain as day as far as why that's the case and with a crap-load of live shows on the horizon (see below) this up-and-coming pop rock and roll band should easily win the hearts of our teenage daughters before they even know what hit them! The way I look at it things could be worse. At least were not talking about another One Direction or anything! And then there's the fact that A) This band plays their own instruments so it's not like this is a pro-tools type of pop album and B) There are legitimate rock hooks to be found on an album like "Lovesick"! Sure, there is a lot of bubblegum pop going on here and you are going to have to wade through it. No one in good conscious can deny that. But, every once in awhile this young trio starts to reminisce about the "good old days" and when that happens...well, let's just say there's some powerful stuff going on! While true blue metal fans will likely want to pass on this I will say that there is plenty to like about Run 2 Cover if you are into the more guitar-driven side of pop rock and/or pop-punk. Seeing as my tastes generally range from Slayer to the Go-Go's I actually enjoyed this album as a nice change of pace kind of option. If you are the same way (meaning your collection is like mine with Iron Maiden's "Number of the Beast" sitting comfortably next to the soundtrack for Saturday Night Fever!) then why not give this one a spin? You can find out more Run 2 Cover on the band's Facebook page or over on the group's official web site.

The Giggitys-Songs In the Key Of Awesome

Loserheart Records
2014

For as far-back as anyone can recall (we're talking about the swinging-seventies at the very least kids) Cleveland and Akron have been involved in a ménage à trois with punk rock. As a matter of fact my home-state the of Ohio as a whole can lay claim to such legendary artists as Devo, The Dead Boys, The Cramps, Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders, Rocket From The Tombs, Pere Ubu and electric eels. And that's just to touch upon a  few of the more recognized names to come riff rocking out of our ever-expanding scene! If you really want to see how deep down Ohio's punk rock roots go you should over to the following link (http://www.clepunk.com/bands.htm), but that's after we get done talking about punk rock's new darlings The Giggitys! Formed out of the blood and guts of legendary Akron, Ohio punk band The Nimrods, with Ric Nimrod himself handling vocals and guitars(!), this cleverly-titled band takes it's name from Family Guy character Glenn Quagmire's catch-phrase while their sound is old-school punk rock 101! Prior to this fun full-length album the band released a demo version of the pop-punk instant classic "Balls Deep In Love With You", but it's actually the Ramones-tinged "Not With You (Winter Moon)" that gleefully opens The Giggitys debut offering! But it's not just The Ramones that The Giggitys pay homage to on this ten-track album. Everyone from All to Zero Boys gets a subtle shout-out with "Songs In The Key Of Awesome" carrying on much of the same joyous racket as these top-tier punk bands once did! Fuzzed-out craziness is on full display with "Goodbye Cruel Girl" as is classic, mid-eighties melodic punk while "15 minutes" is the uglier side of yesteryear's crusty punk scene! Through-out the album the band effectively utilities background chants as easily as buzz-saw guitars with "Talk To The Hand" finding that sweet common ground between The Ramones and Sloppy Seconds! "Don't Think" is gnarly L.A. punk while "Take Control" has New York City written all over it! Craving punk that's a little snotty? How about taking "She's Gone" for a ride? This short and sweet number channels The Misfits just as easier as a few other songs here on "Songs In the Key Of Awesome" echo the likes of 7 Seconds and Fear! And speaking of snotty numbers do you remember that pop-punk instant classic "Balls Deep In Love With You" we were just chatting about? Yeah? Well here it is in it's glorious LP version and it's a total kick in the ass my friends! "Balls Deep In Love With You" (along with "Not With You (Winter Moon)" and this album's rabble-rousser closing number!) have all the hallmarks of classic scene of old all but transforming The Giggitys into tomorrows newest punk rock hero squad! What's more we find The Giggitys taking on the failed promises of yesterday as "Total D" is actually where a lot of us wish a certain "Dookie" band would have gone next (here's a hint, it's got grit and integrity unlike the modern day spank fest that is Green Day!). All of which brings us to this album's real deal of a closer and my new favorite love song, "It's Not Me, It's You". I can think of a few "special" ladies from my past who could benefit from this song's timeless message, but that's another story for another night friends! With it's splendid mixture of all things classic punk and modern day pop punk "Songs In the Key Of Awesome" is as good as it gets kids! Hear it right here ladies and gents: http://thegiggitys.bandcamp.com/album/songs-in-the-key-of-awesome

Sunken Monkey-Party Scars

Bumface Records
2014

Self-described as "pop punk/alternative/rock" and first formed in the early "noughties" (something which makes a tad more sense once you've danced around a bit to the music of these foul-mouth rockers!) we have Lancashire, England's Sunken Monkey and their upcoming new album, "Party Scars". Serving as the group's sophomore outing, "Party Scars" is the the follow-up to a 2009, self-titled release and for a band (guitars/vocals-Spindle, guitars-Rob, bass-Adam and drums- Hendy) which has apparently had more then it's fair share of line-up changes since first coming together there is a remarkable sense of consistency flowing through these gritty numbers. And speaking of numbers, "Party Scars" (with it's run-time of the 38 minutes) comes packaged with 13 songs. Since 13 has always been a favorite number of mine (what can I say friends other then I'm dark!!) I was delighted to see an album that filled that particular quota! But what of the actual music I hear you asking? How is it other then gritty and (as referenced above) danceable? Well, despite the "alternative rock" bit that came with the e-mail promoting the new album "Party Scars" is more about one heartfelt band drawing upon their influences (in this case NOFX, The Menzingers, Rise Against and Four Year Strong) and then transferring all of the energy from said bands into a band of their own making that is part classic punk rock and part classic (heavy) pop-punk. Vibe-wise we're talking about one band that has the whole old-school appeal down flat while the catchy music that makes up the bulk of "Party Scars" comes across as genuine and sincere. It's no wonder then that England's Sunken Monkey has developed a loyal local following! Whether or not the group's last release is as good as this one is the question (or at least my question as this release, so far so good, is all that I've jammed out to so far), but either way "Party Scars" comes recommend.

Derecho-Coffee & Disruption

Derecho/Red Echo Records
2013

Ready to get your rock on? If you answered yes then please allow me to introduce Cambridge-based Derecho. If you answered no then feel free to click your way over to some dreadful Top 40 blog-site. Especially seeing as this female-fronted four-piece, which was formed back in 2010 and sites it's influences as "ranging from 1960's pop to 21st century rock via classic punk", has no intention of taking a backseat to the likes of Miley Cyrus, Lorde, Ke$ha and Lady Gaga! Taking their (fitting) name from a Spanish word meaning "fast moving band of severe thunderstorms" the band, which is featured on the Delinquent Records' compilation "Maidens of Metal" (from the sound of things it was prior to this release), is lead by vocalist/keyboardist/primary songwriter Jo Ash and features within it's ranks well-traveled drummer Mike Ellis. Having worked with artists such as Mitch Mitchell (Jimi Hendrix) and Ash Soan (Adele, Billy Idol) this profession drummer adds an extra air of respectability to this UK rock band. Although, realistically speaking and all, it's not as if Derecho needs the extra attention that someone like Ellis would bring to the band as their music speaks volumes about what this versatile band brings to the rock scene. On "Coffee & Disruption" the band, which also features the skilled-playing of guitarist Mike Wheatley and bassist Marc Zyngier, covers a lot of ground from opener "Remembered" (Blondie meets Paramore?) to "Lonely Girl" with it's Fleetwood Mac vibe and even the Dire Straits-infused "Crash & Burn"! All of which is accomplished thanks to the unmistakable talent of guitarist Mike Wheatley. Whether helping Jo Ash turn a number like "Perfect, Like You" into a emotional, pop-driven rock and roll ripper or treading into No Doubt territory like on "Void" (which, trust me on this one friends, is much better in practice then then it sounds on paper with the No Doubt reference and!) he does it all with grace and style! Have no fear though as at it's core this UK-act is still a hard rocking force of nature as is evident on "December". Featuring great lead guitar work, "December", which ended up being a favorite cut of mine of this (late December of 2013) rock release along with "The Silence", teeters on garage hard rock even as the Jo Ash's intoxicating voice keeps the listener snapped to attention! Even on a more laid-back number like "This Mask" there is the undeniable presence of a guitarist who (no doubt) grew up submersed in the sounds of classic British rock. Of course when we're talking about impact-is-imminent classic guitar rock riffs it helps when you have a bass player like Marc Zyngier in place providing phenomenal bass lines! Marc's presence is felt all over this full-length release whether you're talking about a number like the aforementioned "Void" or the dirty rocker "Alibi". On "Coffee & Disruption" it's great to see a band (or for that matter a producer!) that has finally gotten it right as far as recording the bass lines. Here they are clear as day and when you add to that the professional drumming of Mike Ellis you end up with a rhythm section that does more then just hold pace. They are every bit as involved within the process as Derecho's wonderful front-woman and guitarist and as far as what's next for this Cambridge-based four piece rock band? Only time will tell. If more material like we have on "Coffee & Disruption" (from Blondie-driven punk like "Bystander" to the driving rhythms of eighties-vibe rocker "The Silence" this one has it all!) is in store then I welcome the opportunity to roll with this female-fronted rock outfit wherever they may choose to roam from this point out. You can hear the album for yourself at the link below and, as an added bonus, be sure to check out the video to the group's "The Silence" (featuring very cool keys that are splashed against rock and roll garage riffs!) right here (should you wish to see this band live and in living color!): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osXiJgv49A0 Speaking of live and in living color, Derecho sure sound as if they keep a busy schedule (as far as playing live in concerned!) so, if you're on that side of the pond and all, be sure to check out this original rock and roll band for yourself. I know I would if I was anywhere near where they were playing! Since I can't feasibly do that I'll just have to be content with keeping an eye out for the further adventures of Jo Ash and her rock and roll cohorts!

Boatrocker-Antagonize

Self-Release/Independent
2014

I've got the great site Stereokiller to thank for this one. And up front I'm just going to admit that I plan to cheat as far as the release date goes on this one. Technically-speaking it was released at the tail end of 2013. Or at least digitally. With CD copies just becoming available earlier this month though I can sneak a release like "Antagonize" right passed the cut of line and we'll just pretend that it came out in 2014. That means I can add it to my 2014 best off list. Booyah! Still, I'm getting a fair bit ahead of myself here so let's rewind the tape shall we? Self-described as a "bunch of dorks playing bad music" (although their Facebook page actually states the opposite, which is way more closer to the truth, with "We are great") Boatrocker is a 4-piece band (Chris, John, Sean, Will) from Wilmington, Delaware whose style could best be described as post-hardcore. But, then again, the band, which, prior to this 7-track thing of beauty, released a 2009 demo ("Turn it The Fuck Up") and one other full-length album (2011's "Delicious Jams" which features one of the best album covers I've seen in a L-O-N-G time!), adds in these different elements/ingredients so they are a bit more then just merely "post-hardcore". Whew, that was more then a mouthful. Especially as all I had planned to serve up was the notion that the cool-named Boatrocker turn-up to 11 their overall potential appeal thanks to some timely-placed heavy metal and pop-punk elements! The Stereokiller "suggestion" was New Jersey's Thursday which I can sort of see. Other names have been tossed out as well, but it's more of the same "take this band (x, y or z) and then add these bands (more x, y and z pieces & parts)" when all that really needs to be said is that Boatrocker, whether they are trying their hand at the various nuances that made up late nineties alternative music or attempting to crush your skull with (early 2000') hardcore riffs which have been miraculously raised from the dead through some mystical source (Radiation? Voodoo? A Strange glowing comet?), rocks to the beat of their own drummer and that said beat is deliciously divine!

Forgotten Gems: Profondo Rosso -Next Stop Neurosis

Neat Records
1997

On more occasions then I'd like to admit or even care to remember, which is to say quite a few times, I've been suckered into buying heavy metal lots or, like in this case, a "NWOBHM" lot. Back before I really knew my way around the Internet (and there was still dinosaurs and dial-up connections) it happened a lot as I would just take sellers at their word. These days I know better and am better prepared to do research before I hit either the "bid now" or "buy it now" button. With this 3-piece act I knew that I was not getting a N.W.O.B.H.M. band. Just because they were signed by Neat Records does not mean that they were some sort of British metal act. About the only thing they have in common with other Neat artists is the fact that they hailed from England! As I got it along with Sweet Savage's "Rune", Wraith's "Schizophrenia" and Slander's "Careless Talk Costs Live" (which I already had in it's re-released version) I didn't much care about technicalities. It's merely that I found it kind of funny how much (and how often) people will try to stretch the movement to cover bands like this. I mean at least Slander gets points for their love and devotion of all things N.W.O.B.H.M.! Anyway, the CD's description did mention how, upon signing with Neat Records, they were (supposedly) assigned ex-Tygers of Pan Tang front-man Jess Cox as a manager. That's interesting stuff if it's true and all.  Formed in 1992, and having a sound that owed way more favors to punk rock then it did heavy metal, the band named themselves after Dario Argento's classic 1975 Italian giallo (which is more commonly know these days as "Deep Red" I suspect). What's funny though is how the name choice doesn't really match up with the music on hand. It's possible that the band, which was lead by vocalist/guitarist John Savage, started out a bit more "edgy", but they are nowhere near as dark as their name might imply! After all we are talking about naming your band after a Italian slash-fest! The name choice aside, we're looking at a band/album that reminded me of everyone from (early) Goo Goo Dolls to the Sex Pistols. With bassist Duncan James Garvey (cool name) and drummer Karl Rouleau (also a cool name) on board we find a really steady power trio that rolls out track after track of punk rock and roll cheesiness! As they shuffle about their business on "Next Stop Neurosis" it's easy to pin-point the many bands that these three emulated.
This Sunderland, N.E. England-based band most assuredly loved the likes of The Clash as much as they did The Who. It's said that the group also owed part of their original sound to other influences like  Swervedriver, Jane’s Addiction, Manic Street Preachers and even Ned’s Atomic Dustbin, but that's less obvious (especially on this disc) then bands like The Clash, Goo Goo Dolls and The Sex Pistols. If I walked away with anything (in regards to the album) it was a desire to hear more from the group. So in a way they did get their claws hooked in me. With their only other full-length album, "To Live, And Die, In The UK", on it's way to me as I type this I guess we shall see if musical consistency was a trait that this band flourished in or not.

Counterpoints-The Difference Between Hell and Home

Victory Records
2013

This is the 3rd overall release for Canada's Counterpoints since forming in 2007. The five piece act has always championed honest to goodness hardcore, but with a splash of pop-punk in their sound, and a approach that out of the blue becomes fixated on the melodic side of things 9not that it happens much here as this album is remarkably HEAVY!), they ofter up an interesting take on the genre with "The Difference Between Hell and Home". Two albums into their time with Victory Records (who are well-stocked with hardcore acts on their roster) and these guys look and sound as if they are primed to shake up what is now a largely overflowing mountain of hardcore acts. Be sure to keep an ear out for them, as well as an eye out for these heavy hitters, as it sounds as if they spent plenty of time hitting the stages in their home country and here in the States!

These Hearts-Yours To Take

Victory Records
2013

Pop-punk meets hardcore?  That seems to be the case for Fargo, North Dakota-based These Hearts. Granted the hardcore aspect does make them perfectly suited to be with Victory Records, as all of their bands seem to be hardcore + something, but pop-punk? Yeah, it's odd. The group, which consists of Ryan Saunders on vocals, Daryl Van on lead guitar, Kyle Colby on guitar and backup vocals, Tyler Rice on bass and Isaiah Folk on the drums, are not exactly new to the scene as they were formed back in 2007. And then there's the fact that "Yours To Take" isn't their first trip into the studio. So, what are we to make of them then? Well, first off this is a Christian act although, given the mix of clean singing and hardcore-tinged gruff vocals, it's not like it's easy to follow along with these guys lyric-wise. While their faith is important to them it's not likely to be the deciding factor on whether or not a person is into this kind of groove scene. If it is a factor because you're a Christian then cool, but if one were to automatically write them off because of their faith then that would be lame. Musically that's were it's a with this bunch and, even if I find it really weird to think that this bunch seems as influenced by Blink 182, New Found Glory and Green Day as much as acts like Black Flag, Gang Green, Cro-Mags and the short (as well as potentially Christian hardcore act The Lead), I'm kind of digging what these guys are doing. Make no mistakes about it I'm burned on the op-punk aspect to folks. Sure, I listened to Bad Religion and Social Distortion to (still do) and even had, at one point in my younger days, discs by the pop-punker version of Green Day and Blink 182 (hey, it was about as punk as I could get with my ex wife and still have her listen to it so....), but I like what these guys are about and "Yours To Take" is actually an easy disc to get caught up in. So, pop-punk meets hardcore then? Yeah, I guess I can get down with that....

Mosely-With Pencils In Hand

House Of Fish
2013

I'm taking a wild stab in the dark here, but I'm guessing it's really freaking cold right now in Ottawa, Ontario. That's where this 4-piece band calls  home. With their warm & sunny take on rock and roll though this young band must be making the area all the more enjoyable, cold weather or not! For a band that was only formed back in February of 2012 they sure do seem to as if they have managed to do a lot in a relatively short span of time. The band released the 10-track album "Frailty" in April of 2012 followed by the "Don't You Dare" single this past December. "With Pencil's In Hand" is the latest release from Canada's Mosely and it finds this 4-piece band offering up 6-tracks of energetic garage rock. Now, to show that I do indeed have kids (which should be obvious as I dearly love them and try to mention them as often as possible!) the first thing that popped into my head when I saw the name Mosely was Jennifer "Moze" Mosely from Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide (played by the lovely Lindsey Shaw). Weird I know, but this band almost has the same sort of quirky fun to them as the show. They are not as goofy as TV show, but one of the other things they have in common is this sense of enduring charm you get from both. Now, just like the TV character "Mosely" this young band is features an equally lovely lady in the form of front-woman Dani Poisson. As she leads the band in an effortless fashion over these 6 tracks words such as "energetic", "pop-punk", "alternative rock", "sunny", "fun" and "garage pop rock and roll" come to mind. Consider those the "tags" then for this band that cites Coldplay, Thrice, Foo Fighters, Kings Of Leon, Muse and Black Sabbath as influences. Nah, I'm just kidding about that Black Sabbath part (seeing if you all are awake on a sleepy Saturday) as these four seem more drawn to a band like Blondie then Black Sabbath! While I've thrown out the terms "pop-punk" (and even "pop-rock") this band does have more of a rock edge then those two descriptions would imply. Yes, the band can craft some pop-tinged material, but it's not like any of the songs on "With Pencils In Hand" are god awful Avril Lavigne "Sk8er Boi" pop or anything! Since they are lead by a woman with a little spunk in her voice I'm sure sooner or later (if it hasn't already happened that is) that they will get compared to Paramore. You do have to wonder how many female-fronted hard pop/rock and roll bands get compared automatically to Paramore? Probably too many to count. For some unknown reason though another band comes to mind who are, well, a little more less known. After listening to this EP I can honestly say that this is what I'd imagine a heavier Zolof the Rock and Roll Destroyer would sound like! (just look up the name folks). Anyway, this is something different then 99.9% of what you'd normal come across here, but I like to walk on the wild side sometimes so why not have a band like Mosely here right?

A Private July-Frown

Pinhead Records
2012

If your wondering what a pop-punk band like A Private July (Whose name I must assume has something to do with my birthday being in July and thus paying tribute to that fact) are doing on a site called "Heavy Metal Time Machine" I'll tell you why:

A) This New York band plays blissfully sloppy EARLY pop-punk  (not the trendy radio pop-punk crap)
B) Just because "heavy metal" is in the title doesn't mean we can't cover other genres of music. We're not  Maximumrocknroll here kids. We don't just cover heavy metal bands. We cover just about EVERYTHING!

With four new songs and two covers ("Girls With Boyfriends" by The Sheckies  and "Just like Kurt" by Weston) this is a fun EP that brings to mind everyone from The Queers to Sloppy Seconds. With that "I'm going to kill you in your sleep" clown cover how can you possibly go wrong?
