Battle of the bands
It's easy and it's relatively painless, it's battle of the bands. I list two bands and you choose the one you prefer. This time it's:
Dio vs. Ozzy Osbourne
***Remember we are comparing the bands here and not just the singers and not any other bands they have been in. So you are only taking into account albums that say Dio on the cover against albums that say Ozzy Osbourne on them.
So who do you choose and why?

I would have to go with Dio. Ozzy has (had) a great voice but he barely does any of the songwriting in any of his bands. His first two albums are great but once that band broke up, Ozzy went downhill.
I would pick Dio. Twenty years ago it may have been a closer contest. The first two Ozzy albums are great and so is No more tears, but the rest of his albums are okay or worse. Dio has done a few clunkers like Angry machines and Strange Highways, but largely he has been far more consistant.
Although the world will be eternally grateful to Dio for coming up with the metal horns. Ozzy contribution to the genre is far more reaching.
Fred-Ozzy coasted a lot on his guitarists and his image in the 80's.
Fuzz-It's close I think.
Ben-Sabbath are my favorite band and Heaven and hell was good for the band and good for metal. The last two albums with Ozzy stunk and it was the whole band's fault. Getting Dio and Vinnie Appice in the band gave them some new life.
Webpirate-Music as we know it would be pretty poor without the British rock and metal bands from between say 1965-1985. Probably half of my top ten bands are British.
Although the consistency of Dio is admirable, and I really enjoy a couple of Dio albums, it's hard to match Ozzy's first two releases and their influence on metal for decades.
Ozzy by a half-length.

I vote for Dio. It's the same old thing over and over again, but I'm sick to death of Ozzy.
Webpirate-Claiming a band would have found another inspiration is all speculation because british did happen and in a big way. I don't mean I just appreciate them because they influenced whoever, I like a lot of British bands from the Who to Motorhead and a lot in between. They were matching or surpassing American bands for years. Your point about the Beatles just doesn't hold water because a lot of acts came from humble beginnings were lucky to get signed. Not just bands from other countries because you look at Elvis or Buddy Holly as example of artists that were surprised they got signed. However, each to his own.
i agree with ben heller up there. in band terms, black sabbath were more important and influential. in personal terms, dio has been more consistent, more true to himself, and has aged infinitely more gracefully. plus, i love his voice much better.
Interesting site. Useful information. Bookmarked.
