Heavy Metal Thunderdome

Time again for Heavy Metal Thunderdome where you pick which album you prefer based on the music. If you think of the early 1980's and England you probably think of the NWOBHM scene and that's understandable because it was a very busy and exciting scene. Yet a lot of veteren bands were going strong or heating up again at the same time as well including Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Ozzy and Budgie. So I picked to of those to pit against one another today. It is...

Silly question Mark. Motorhead!

It's always a personal preference when deciding upon two entirely different albums from separate bands. This Motörhead lineup and the Dio led Black Sabbath are beyond legendary, so it is not that easy to choose between the two, especially when I revere both albums.

With all that said, I don't find the question "silly" at all. This "Mob Rules" album carries more weight when it comes to leading the charge of Metal into the 80's and beyond. Plus, I like "Mob Rules" better, despite my allegiance to Motörhead.

Being a teenager when "Mob Rules" and "Ace Of Spades" were released, I know just how both albums did affect "me" and my buddies back then. We would listen to "Mob Rules" and be mesmerized by Tony Iommi's riffs and Ronnie James Dio's vocals.

In closing, if you choose this Motörhead album, your basically stating that Lemmy is a better singer than Ronnie James Dio and "Fast" Eddie Clarke is a better guitarist than Tony Iommi. Part of my being a lifetime Metalhead is being a Metal realist. "Ace Of Spades" over "Mob Rules"? Uh... not in my Metal world.

Definitely Motorhead. Close one though.

When did I say I was picking Lemmy over Dio? That's a really dumb comment. Sorry but it is. I'm choosing between the two albums and I happen to think Ace Of Spades is a better album. Is it musically as technical as Mob Rules? No. But, you can have technical (see any Ynqwie Malmsteen album) and being boring as shit. I'm sorry Metalodyssesy if I don't share your opions and are not as much a musical genious as you. Besides, the comment was a joke between Mark and I because he knows how much of a Motorhead fan I am. That's all it was.

Besides, having seen them both live I admit Dio is a much better live act. Motorhead is more of a rock n' roll noise act. There are some brilliant albums Dio has done as well as Motorhead. There are also dudes for both. I've just never been into Mob Rules that much. I'd rather have Dio w/ Rainbow or solo.

Gee whiz Andy... My intentions of commenting is not to put anyone down. If you or anyone chooses one album over the other, I'm "supposing" that you or anyone else will like the vocals and music better than other said album.

Mark, I never have professed myself to be a "musical genius"... you surely know that through our communication. That remark was a tad much.

No big deal, guys. Just a difference of opinion on the albums. I think we can all agree they are both fine albums that are still classics thirty and thirty plus years after their release dates.

It's all how you look at it. Dio was a great singer and this was a fine performance. The Dio era Sabbath albums were a real power boost for Sabbath who had become lame for the last couple of Ozzy-era albums. Heaven and Hell and Mob rules were a couple of heavy hitters though. Motorhead had been solid since their start, but I think Ace of spades was a step up from even their Overkill album. I think the writing and those heavy grooves on Ace of spades is what makes me prefer it to Mob Rules.

If I came to your blog metalodyssey and called you out over your choice of two albums I'm pretty sure you would get bent out of shape. It's fine that you think that Mob Rules is a better album but then assuming that I choose this album because it's this or that is foolish. I'm sorry that's how I feel. Mark is right Ace Of Spades has better grooves and is more of a rockin' disc. I know you and Mark are friends it's just that I'm tired of people questioning my musical tastes/ability to review albums. I'm been a fan for well over 25 years and have more albums than I know what to do with. Having a difference of opion is one thing but going out of your way to point out why I'm wrong and then expecting that I'll just sit there and go "oh, ok..." that's not me. Sorry Mark.

It's great to have differing views and debate them. That's one one of the things I look forward to on this blog and other music blogs. Still remember it's just music and not worth getting that worked up over.

Motorhead takes this one, my all-time fave song is on this album "The Chase is better than the catch".

Sabbath by a mile for me. Whilst I love classic era Motorhead, this is not one of my faves by them. It's good, but they've done much better IMHO.
