Ichabod Crane-Brimstone

Under The Current
2011

Those of you who are a little older (and a lot more grey around the edges) like yours truly should remember Disney's "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" (taken from "The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad"). Ichabod Crane (the main character in Washington Irving’s “Legend of Sleepy Hollow" who is described as superstitious, cruel and depraved) was hunted down by a headless horseman who made the one in Tim Burton's 1999 "Sleepy Hollow" look like a school girl. His wicked and downright scary as hell cackle was matched only by his essence of pure evil. When he comes riding out on his black steed you know the shits really hit the fan. Forget Ichabod Crane for a minute. Vocalist Scott is that horseman. From the opening of "Strange Aeons" to Brimstone's closing number "Hail!" this guy freaked me out. He is one wicked and insane front man leading this full tilt charge of intense thrash on it's destructive path. He's also the only consistent member of the band since it's formation in early 2006. Having already shared the stage with bands like 3 Inches of Blood, Napalm Death, Woe of Tyrants, Revocation, The Black Dahlia Murder, August Burns Red and Inhale/Exhale the group finally seems to have found a stable line-up. Having released some demos, EPs and the full-length "Wearing the Horns" the group have managed to built up a loyal following in Ohio and beyond. Brimstone has a planned release date of April 23rd at Musica (located in Akron, Ohio). While the band plays thrash metal that would even make Slayer proud there is actually more to the band than that. I heard them called deathcore too yet that's not it either. It's more like taking technical thrash, adding some death and then giving it a bloodbath in rocking hardcore. More than anything it's heavy. Heavy and evil sounding. Don't expect breakdowns kids. I know it's the rage and you all seem to like them these days but I'm telling you Ichabod Crane doesn't need to pull out those sorts of tricks. Why play around when you can just rip people's souls out and feast on them. Brimstone is not going to find play on rock radio either folks and that's a good thing. Ichabod Crane would be responsible for far too many traffic accidents if this was released on the masses while people were driving. It's better anyway to go see them live, pick up a copy of this and then play it at home where nobody (other than yourself of course) would be hurt by the insane amount of headbanging that will be happening! Wow, Mike, thank you so much for the awesome review! So glad to hear you like our stuff and that you get where we're coming from musically (thrash!). Thanks for taking the time to give our record a spin, and for posting this, we really appreciate it. Stay evil!

Brimstone is pure thrash...maybe not Bay Area thrash but heavy as hell/fist in your face thrash. I was thrown off by the deathcore tag that I heard the band get called before. Maybe there is a hair of it somewhere inside their sound. That said Ichabod Crane obviously pull from so many different sounds/styles that calling them deathcore would be a cop out. And Scott is for the record the voice of evil!

Sorry Andy, I realized that after posting the comment and felt like a dick :D
And yeah, we're not like 100% old-school thrash (why retread what's already been done to death, you know?), I was just thrown off by getting called a deathcore band in that other review. I guess it just goes to show that what the musicians aim for and what others take away from it can be two different things... Glad you like the vocal style, evil is exactly what we're going for!
Anon, I'm confused- what are you referring to?

He didn't call it trash, he called it THRASH as in THRASH METAL

I'm still not quite sure what it is your talk ing about Anonymous. My review? Another review? Scott (the singers) post? No idea you've lost us all. I listened to this album several times through and must say if I had to describe it I would say it's thrash. It's certainly not metalcore or deathcore. Just piss in the face heavy ass thrash. What does it really matter though if you call this thrash of hardcore pop? Either way it was heavy as all get out and make me want to go punch a flamming vegan liberal in the head. Isn't that the purpose?
