Jenner-To Live is To Suffer
Infernö Records
2017
Jenner is a speed/thrash metal band from Belgrade, Serbia that was formed in early 2013 by sisters Alexandra (guitar) and Marija (drums). Originally featured in one of my posts from last Saturday, lead vocalist Anđelina Mitić and Mina Petrović (bass) round out this skilled quartet which is being heavily promoted as being the only "all-girl metal band" from the Belgrade area and/or Serbia. In my opinion that is a sad reminder that we still have a long way to go towards equality. Like all genres of music, new metal bands should be judged solely on the basis of their talent and not on the actual sexes of it's members. What's more, Jenner is a strong case where it just isn't necessary to use "tags" as a selling point. Equally influenced by the traditional heavy metal of Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Grim Reaper as they are (the thrash of) Anthrax, Heathen, Testament, Exodus, Overkill, and Agent Steel, Jenner is more than capable of letting it's music do the talking for them! On the band's full-length debut, "To Live is To Suffer", Jenner mixes passion with power as it whips out eight tracks of (eighties-inspired) speed metal/thrash! Razor-sharp solos and thunderous drumbeats work side by side with precision while crushing bass lines and high-pitched vocals take you on a spin through time. Your final destination? A day...some years back. Heavy metal on the radio (Z-Rock no doubt), your denim jacket on a chair, and a pile of cassette tapes that are all worn out from constant play. In this setting (forgotten by time, but still fresh in your memory) you find the band Jenner. Heavy yet technical. Aggressive and melodic. Frenzied and filled with fantastic arrangements. Those are but some of the fine the qualities of the band's first album. Seldom witnessed in today's scene, Jenner is a classy metal band that is obviously invested in it's sound. While it is great finding a new metal band that is entirely comprised of powerful women, Jenner should have been dubbed Killer speed/thrash metal from Serbia with a vintage vibe. It's simply a more appropriate title for this intelligent band...
