Skull Fist-Chasing the Dream

NoiseArt Records
2014

I've long had a soft spot for Canadian heavy metal/speed metal band Skull Fist. Having loved the band's 2011 full-length debut album "Head öf the Pack" (which I did review at one in time) and having picked up (and subsequently devoured) their cleverly-titled "Heavier Than Metal" EP (released in 2010 it was the follow-up to the band's 2006 "No False Metal" demo) I was psyched to see this one land in my inbox. With founding member/sole surviving original member Jackie Slaughter (ex-30 Years Too Late, ex-Carpadium, Jackie Slaughter Experience, ex-Mäniac, ex-Kïll Cheerleadër) once again taking the reins on lead vocals and guitar and with some like-minded metalheads backing him up "Chasing the Dream", which runs about 37 minutes long and totally kicks ass(!), is the perfect follow-up to "Head öf the Pack"! Over the course of nine fist-banging, "Throw those devil horns in the air and mosh your hearts out!", cuts of pure heavy metal love this New Wave Of Traditional Heavy Metal (NWOTHM) four-piece rolls out the red carpet for fans of crazy good, "Hell Bent For Leather" on a "Highway To Hell", heavy metal! By this point in his career (Seeing as Skull Fist is pretty much just a vehicle for a certain someone to live out his love of honest-to-goodness, bang your head like a maniac, heavy metal!) main-man Jackie Slaughter knows what he wants and how to deliver it and, in doing so, having now thrown off the colorful musical inspirations in favor of a more original and downright distinctive sound and style, he proves that Skull Fist are now the innovators and not the followers! Easily in the running (and most assuredly my a choice for!) for heavy metal album of the year for 2014! Translation? Pick this one up and rage on my friends....rage on!

Metal Law-Lawbreaker (Second Edition)

Metal On Metal Records
2013

Germany's Metal Law began life back in 1997 as Reudig. Under that name the group released the 2004 LP "Hunter & Prey". After a brief name change to Rapid Fire in 2005 they settled on Metal Law in 2006. At the tail end of 2007 the group released  their debut-album, "Night of the Wolf", before issuing this sophomore release in 2008. Now, 5 years later, the good folks at Metal On Metal Records have seen fit to re-release this sold-out album in a remastered form and with 3 bonus cuts tacked on for extra emphasis! Looking at the revamped album-art (chains have been added as a cool frame) you'd be under the impression that this is heavy metal at it's purest and really, for arguments sake, it is! Metal Law wear their influences rather proudly so no one can really proclaim that these guys rock out with originality. Fellow-Germanic bands like Accept, Running Wild, Sinner and Stormwitch are all close cousins to Metal Law's sound although the likes of Judas Priest, Manowar and Iron Maiden are not that far from the gene pool. Even if these Germans wear their influences pretty close to their sleeves it's all in good fun. "Lawbreaker", which is over 60 minutes now with the 3 bonus cuts, is clearly played with passion and enthusiasm so, even if it's not technically going to bowl people over with it's originality, it's got enough going for it metal-wise and fist-in-the -air-wise to make for a really easy listen!.

Witch Cross-Axe to Grind

Hells Headbangers
2013

"The cult is alive...WITCH CROSS have returned". So opens the promo material that came with "Axe To Grind" and, without coming across as too much of a fanboy here, truer words have seldom been spoken! Who could have imagined that all these years Witch Cross would return with a sophomore recording that was every bit a comeback album as well? With 1984's "Fit for Fight" being such a killer LP, albeit a cult LP, fans of Witch Cross would be justified in feeling leery about this new release. When "Demon in the Mirror" kicks in though all of those fears are thrown out the window! "Axe to Grind" picks up where "Fit to Fight" left off and showcases a band that still has plenty of fire in their gut. This is track after track of straight-up heavy metal all with that very distinct Witch Cross vibe. "Axe to Grind", which was mastered by Flemming Rasmussen (Metallica, Morbid Angel, Blind Guardian) and mixed by Chris Tsangarides (Judas Priest, Thin Lizzy, Anvil), is one of those albums where you can't help but think of metal's heyday. Had this been released right after "Fit for Fight" there's no doubt that it would have made Witch Cross more of a household name. Vocalist Kevin Moore, who for all the world just seems to have just fallen out of the sky as there is no mention of him playing in other bands, is the perfect front-man for this Danish band as he's got the heavy metal 101 singing down pat! With founding members Mike "Wlad" Kock ( guitars) and Jan "Little John Field" (bass) serving as a link to the past (but still playing with the same fury they did back on "Fit for Fight") the new version of Witch Cross sounds both retro and modern. All that means is that Witch Cross' new album should find wide appeal. "Axe to Grind" has already found itself in heavy rotation in my office space and I look forward to holding a physical copy of it in my hands when it's released in July (just a FYI for anyone looking for birthday ideas for me this LP comes out 2 days before my 40th B-day!). I close with this little nugget of information-it sure looks as if my best of 2013 list has found another addition!

Sign Of The Jackal- Mark of the Beast

High Roller Records
2013

When I first laid witness to Italy's Sign Of The Jackal back in 2011 (when they made my best of 2011 list!) I was blown away by the killer "The Beyond"! That 5-track EP (which included a choice cover of "Head Over Heals" by Meghan) was my personal introduction to this female-fronted, horror movie influenced, heavy metal act and that introduction lead to repeated listens of anything Sign Of The Jackal related. Now the group, who were originally formed in 2007, are finally releasing their long-awaited full-length debut album and to say that I walked into this one high on life is a huge understatement! The line-up for "Mark of the Beast" is Laura Coller (vocals), Roberto "Bob" Condini (guitars, vocals), Max (guitars, vocals, keyboards), Röby "Knife" (bass, vocals) and Heavy Mate (drums, vocals) and, from top (Laurie) to bottom (Heavy Mate) everyone sounds as if they came locked and loaded for this release! It's more of the same for this Italian act as they pull in their musical influences (everyone from Exciter to Black Lace) and stuff the sound with horror movie magic. Before we go any further though let's save some of you out there a bit of time. If you liked "The Beyond" or "Haunted House Tapes" then read no further. Just stop what you're doing and go out and pick this one up. If it's not out yet when you read this then pre-order it if you can. The foundation of killer traditional heavy metal that those two earlier recordings established is built on over the course of this new album. Brick by brick, track by track you find Sign Of The Jackal ripping through 80's-inspired heavy metal while they lovingly showcase their affection for classic horror flicks. I've said it before and I'll say it again folks. When you combine female-fronted metal, 80's influences and horror movies you get what I consider a winner! OK, that said there is a few things worth mentioning. Truthfully there are only four new tracks on the 12-song promo I listened to* so that might be a downer to some folks. That said all of the songs that were previously released on other recordings are different here. The re-recorded tracks are different versions and they sound much better on "Mark of the Beast". Side by side I prefer these new versions over the demo versions. What helps with that is the production which has improved since they signed on with High Roller Records. "Mark of the Beast" has a near perfect sound for heavy metal like this. The overall vibe is still eighties in nature, but this 12-track release never falls into the trap of sounding retro thankfully. Sigh Of The Jackal acknowledges their roots (Judas Priest, Taist of Iron, Iron Maiden, Malteze, etc), but they never look back for too long. Instead Laura Coller, who sounds as sinister as she does sensual, leads her band-mates into battle and, as they fight tooth and nail until the bitter end, they give it all for the glory of heavy metal and they succeed!

* As on "The Beyond" both the CD and vinyl version of "Mark of the Beast" will feature a unique cover song!

Storm Warning-Storm Warning (Demo)

Swords & Chains Records
2013

My friend Strappado posted information on Storm Warning's debut demo on his site: http://strappadometalblog.blogspot.com/  and, true to his word, this demo features true heavy metal in the vein of Gotham City, Saxon and Midnight Priest! There's some of the other usual hallmarks of a band like this (Iron Maiden and Judas Priest love) and, what I believe to be (if my ears aren't playing tricks on me), Grim Reaper, Witch Cross, Angel Witch and Demon traits as well! All around, as Strappado foretold, this is TRUE METAL boys and girls. It appears that the band released this demo on CD-R initially (in 2012 no less!) before choosing to issue a limited-edition cassette on Sword & Chains Records. Why not? Considering how much this sounds like a golden oldie from the days of old (or if you will back when cassettes ruled the earth) it makes sense to unleash this on the public in plastic form! Limited to a mere 100 yellow copies, and now at least one less cassette as I bought my copy yesterday I believe, it features 2 live bonus tracks that weren't available when the band original released the CD-R version of the demo. The 2 live cuts are, beautifully, more raw and showcase a band that excels in a live setting. Unfortunately that live setting is most likely on the other side of the pound as this old-school heavy metal act hails from Germany. With Johnny Topside on leads vocals the band is rounded out by  guitarists Andy N. and Tim H., bassist Jacky J. and drummer Freddi G. Why it's only Johnny, and his wonderfully raw & real vocals, that is the only one allowed to give their full last name I'm not quite sure, but it's all good and this 5-piece band has a nice 5-track demo on their hands here. You can find out more at Swords & Chains Records or Heavy Merch!. Also, be sure to follow Swords & Chains at their Facebook for updates http://www.facebook.com/swordsandchainsrecords on future releases.Want to listen before you buy this fun little demo of throw-back, eighties-inspired heavy metal? Of course you do! Then click on that link below my friends! And as always live loud and proud my friends!

Sanktuary-Something Fierce

Spread The Metal Records
2013

The last time we say Sanktuary was in 2011 with the "Tundrastruck" 3-way with split with fellow Canadians Metalian and Black Moor. Now this young band, who were formed in 2007 and also have 2 previously released EPs to their name, take up the battle cry that is traditional heavy metal and ride out for glory! Sanktuary, who have blessed Heavy Metal Time Machine with an interview before (see link below), has shared the stage with such acts as 3 Inches of Blood, Skull Fist, Reanimator, Striker, Blood Ceremony and Savage Blade. The band is lead by guitarist/vocalist Alan Binger whose vocals bring to mind many a great cult eighties heavy metal bands. On "Something Fierce" Alan Binger is backed up in style by bassist Cole Hume, drummer Anders Grasholm and guitarist Glen Emond (who appears to no longer be in the band quite possibly). The members of Sanktuary team up to offer the listener some good, old-fashioned, fist in the air metal anthems that kicks off with the 1:44 minute opener "Dead Prey". As an album opener this cut is damn near perfect. It slowly unfolds moving closer and closer to the listener before Sankturary tear into the explosive cut "Heat Lightning". This Megadeth meets Judas Priest like number is a hard living, fast driving thrasher as is "Thrill Of The Kill". On "Thrill Of The Kill" the band finds comfortable footing in territory previously inhabited by the likes of 3 Inches of Blood and Cauldron. With "Hail The Villain" Sanktuary turns back the clock to a time when bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Dio ruled the land. Taking that foundation the band gives it a shoot of  adrenaline and turns everything up to 11! That's an old Spinal Tap reference for those who don't know, but make no mistake about it this band is nothing if not 100% dedicated to the fine art of kicking ass! "Screeching For Vengeance", while an interesting named number (Priest anyone?) is another "foot on the pedal, let's hit 100 mph guys!" metal thrasher. Somewhere I'd imagine bands like Anvil and Metal Church much be smiling knowing the impact they have had on a generation of young metalheads! One of the album's true highlights is "Beyond The Wall". This number, which serves as a sort of intro for the epic thrasher "Fire In The Sky" is simply the kind of beautiful guitar playing you might have expected to hear out of Metallica way back in the day. When you take the beauty of  "Beyond The Wall" and then follow it up with "Fire In The Sky" (which almost sounds like a mash-up of Judas Priest and Slayer!) you have yourself a true album highlight. Good judgement call guys. That right there is the sign of a band that "gets it". If Sanktuary get's the right kind of press, and word of mouth publicity, and are able to catch a few breaks here in the States (touring-wise, with the right bill, a band like this could explode pretty much over night!) I could see big things for this Canadian outfit. Man, considering all of the great bands coming from our neighbors to the north, Canada is becoming a reliable source of killer heavy metal acts. From bands like Exciter and Anvil (I'm not counting Rush are they are more rock in nature) to new groups like Sanktuary true metal is alive and well on are side of the pound!

Lady Beast-Lady Beast

Infernö Records
2013

"I am Lady Beast" Lady Beast front-woman Deborah Levine roars as this self-titled release comes charging forward like a hungry lion from the days of coliseums and gladiators! This Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 5-piece might not hail from my favorite place on earth (I'm a Browns fan after all!), but man alive if they aren't another perfect example of the greatness of true heavy metal I don't know what is! Deborah Levine is one powerful lead singer and this self-titled EP, which was originally issued in August of 2012 on LP, is another impressive re-issue from our friends over at Infernö Records. This female-fronted heavy metal act was formed by Deborah Levine and bassist Greg Colaizzi (Wrathcobra) back in 2009 and are already making a name for themselves thanks to their blend of traditional heavy metal and New Wave Of British Heavy Metal. Lady Beast, which is a great name for a band (female-fronted or not), draw from the likes of Dio, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Doro/Warlock, Scorpions, Accept, Saxon, Motörhead and Thin Lizzy to create their own sensational take on the genre. Seriously, where does Infernö Records find all of these great bands? First Death Rides A Horse and now this bunch?

Anyway, the band went through the usual line-up changes before settling down with the current line-up. Along with Deborah Levine and Greg Colaizzi Lady Beast is filled out by lead guitarist Tommy Kinnett, rhythm guitarist Twiz, aka: Christopher Tritschler (Carousel), and  drummer Adam Ramage of crossover act Oh Shit They're Going to Kill Us (another great name for a band!). Infernö Records will be re-issuing Lady Beast's 8 track EP on CD and cassette with the CD version only including a cool cover of "Ram It Down" by Judas Priest. Now, speaking of the band's choice of cover, which really is quite fun as well as being cool, Judas Priest are obvious one of the other big influences of the band. Tommy Kinnett's leads are straight out of the school of British heavy metal and add the perfect compliment to Deborah's forceful vocals. For a band with only one recording under their belt so far the talent level is superb as there isn't a dub to be found on this EP. With female-fronted metal bands suddenly springing up all over the place a band like Lady Beast needs to do a lot to stand out and yet, even as young of a band as they are on paper, the group has a maturity about them and a remarkably focused vibe. Lady Beast have a familiar sound to them that is comfortable and easy to get caught up. This is another new band that I could see making some serious waves even if the market is getting over-flooded with female-fronted heavy metal acts. My only complaint about this re-release is that even if you count the cover of "Ram It Down" it just feels too short. I'm left longing to hear more from Lady Beast now! Here's hoping that A) it isn't too long until the band issues a follow-up to "Lady Beast" and B) seeing as they hail from Pittsburgh they come down and play live in my part of Ohio soon!

Breaking news!!!! Masque reforms!!!!

Several weeks back I promised I'd have great news in regards to a cult eighties heavy metal band and here it is: The Mighty Masque, whose "The Dead Of The Night" EP is simply one of the greatest traditional heavy metal albums of all time, has re-formed and are in the process of writing new material and preparing for the long overdo CD re-release of "The Dead Of The Night"!  Simply put Masque, who sadly only released the one lone EP before calling it quits, were the sound of pure heavy metal and their original vinyl-only release, an absolutely perfect example of true heavy metal, is a highly-sought after collector's item! Previously the only way you could hear this album was if you downloaded it online illegally or settled for cheaply issued CD bootlegs. Thankfully "The Dead Of The Night" will finally get the deluxe treatment that it rightly deserves and the band members themselves will be rewarded for their efforts. Along with the CD, which will tentatively come with one new track and a 16 page color booklet, the band will be issuing the re-release on vinyl so collectors of all shapes and sizes will be quite happy! The best news of all, especially if you live in the UK I'd say, is that the band has plans to embark an upcoming tour to promote the re-release! In the words of the band themselves: "A new era is unfolding. An upcoming tour be titled “Unfinished Business”, Masque are back, all new, all different - to settle the Unfinished Business!"

That was then...

And this is now!

(Amy and Pete in the studio)

New guitarist Hayden Bedwell lays down some sweet riffs!

Along with the news of the band re-forming comes the news that Masque has a new singer! Replacing original vocalist Jo Phipps is newcomer Amy Casson (the new version of Masque also features new guitarist Hayden Bedwell as well as "unofficial member" guitarist/keyboardist Gavin Hyatt) and, as an exclusive here at Heavy Metal Time Machine, we have her very first ever interview! The word is that Amy, who is a wonderfully down to earth woman, brings a new dimension to Masque and that the band sounds better then ever! I'd just like to thank founding member/chief song-writer (and all around insanely cool guy) bassist Pete Jensko for setting up this interview and of course Amy for taking the time to talk with us. Enjoy!

Andy-Could you introduce yourself please.

Amy-Hey I'm Amy Casson, I'm 26 and am the lead vocalist in Masque and from a town called Witney In Oxfordshire.
Amy takes over the mic for Masque in epic fashion!

Andy-Fill us in on your background some if you would.

Amy-Been in Witney all my life, my childhood was mostly brought up by my mum and grandparents, I've been to college where I studied Music Technology, worked many jobs most of them rubbish, and currently as well as singing in Masque, I am studying a degree in Music Performance.

Andy-As a singer who influenced you? Are you a metal fan yourself?

Amy-There are many singers mostly strong fronted female singers such as Amy Lee from Evanescence, Sandra Nasić from Guano Apes, Cristina Scabbia from Lucuna Coil, Gwen Stefani when in No Doubt, Sharon Janny den Adel from within Temptation, Tarja Turunen former singer from Nightwish to name a few.I have a very wide taste in music and metal is definitely included in that.

Andy-Is Masque the first band you've fronted?

Amy-In a way it is, I have tried with a couple of other bands in the past but they did not get very far due to different factors, I have always been very particular in what band would suit me and vice versa and Masque felt like it was meant for me.

It's on!

Andy-As a women in rock have you struggle to be taken seriously because of your good looks? Have you experienced the stigma and, frankly, sexism that is still prevalent in too much of the heavy metal culture today?

Amy-As this is the first real band that I've fronted I haven't really given it much thought as didn't even consider my looks in the process and always focused on my voice and haven't come across this problem as of yet. However in general and being brutally honest I think your always gonna get some people who are sexist and if this is the case then in my mind if this is how they think then they don't take their music seriously and I would pity that and feel sorry them, as this is the 21stcentury and in today's world there's no time for being narrow minded.

Andy-How did you first come to hear about Masque?

Amy-Through an advert that was placed on line, I read it and sounds bizarre but it was like they were talking about me, so listened to some of the tracks and though straight away that's me I can do that, so messaged them, had a meeting with Pete, went for an audition and the rest is history as they say.

Andy-How does it feel to be fronting what many people consider to be a cult eighties band?

Amy-Doesn't bother me in the slightest, if that's what people want to think then let them think it but they would be wrong, cause I don't think the songs sound as if there from that time, if anything I don't think a lot of people were ready for Masque and missed out, when they see us and hear the songs they will soon change their minds, not sounding to cocky ha ha.

Andy-Is there more pressure in singing the older Masque songs (because of diehard fans of "The Dead Of The Night" EP) or in singing the new material because of people's anticipation/expectations?

Amy-There is pressure obviously as I don't want to disappoint fans, it makes me work that much harder and push myself to prove that I can meet their expectations and more, and that's a good thing in my eyes.

Andy-Have you played live with the band and if so how has the response been?

Amy-We have our first opening small gig on the 23rd of May, so cant really say much on that. But the response already and we haven't even played has been truly amazing.

Andy-Do you feel like you have some big shoes to fill since you've replaced Jo Phipps?

The fire still burns for bassist Pete Jensko!

Amy-Ha Ha waiting for this question Jo is an amazing singer, and I'm flattered to be replacing her and obviously keeping up again to the fans expectations is gonna be something, but that just pushes me even harder to hopefully one day be even better then Jo.

Andy-How is the new material coming together?

Amy-Its coming along really well, all very exciting people are gonna be blown away when they hear the material.

Andy-What should fans expect from the new version of Masque? How would you describe the new sound?

Amy-There is a lot of new and great material which they should be buzzed and excited about, the sound id say has still some of the old sound just revamped to keep up with the times.

Andy-With the re-release on the horizon are you prepared for the inevitable comparisons that will be made between the older material and the newer songs?

Amy-Yeah of course I'm sure the fans will let us know exactly what they think ha ha but then that shows us that they care and are passionate about the band and songs and that is something truly great to see, but I'm sure and no doubt about it that they are gonna love the new material.

Andy-Are you ready for the next step? By that I mean let's say Masque suddenly goes huge and it's non-stop touring, interviews, etc and instant stardom. Would you be able to handle that kind of sudden life adjustment?

Amy-This is something that I love and am passionate about, and have always wanted I wouldn't care if I was earning next to nothing, if all what you say above happens it would be incredible and I would just take it all in and think of it as an amazing experience, I wouldn't let it get to my head just roll with it, I just say bring it on!

Andy-What would you like to say to Masque fans?

Amy-Masque is back with a vengeance and has unfinished business!

Andy-Final words? I give you the mic Amy...

Amy-I wont let the new or old fans down I know what they want and will deliver and hope they except me as part of the Masque family like I do them.

Amy and Pete in preparation for the comeback.

Below you can read my original review of the killer "The Dead Of The Night" and be sure to check out the bands brand new Facebook page and "like it"! As soon as I have more information of the re-issue I will be sure to post it here.

Omega Reign-Arise

Itchy Metal Entertainment
2012

Somehow this one slipped passed me as it was released back in November of 2012. Usually traditional heavy metal acts mark my internal radar go off, but this Massachusetts-based 5-piece sneaked by me like a thief in the night. Oh well & hell. Anyway, Omega Reign, who were formed in 1998 by guitarist Gene Felix, have shared the stage with the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, Steven Adler of Guns and Roses, Wasp, George Lynch of Dokken, Bullet Boys, Taproot and many more. "Arise", a 9-track affair, is their only recording to date it looks like. It has to be said up-front that for a self-released album the production is rather good. If anything it sounds like a late-80's/early-90's recording and that, in this concept, works really well. All of the music is written by guitarists Gene Felix and David Bowman and, along with vocalist Hank Perry, bassist Scott Langevin and drummer Tyrone Williams (all of whom sound like class-act professionals) navigate heavy metals landscape. Influenced by bands like Dio, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Queensrÿche and Savatage the band plays true, straight-ahead heavy metal that is, sadly it seems, lacking in this day and edge. "Arise", which is about 40 minutes in length, is a fun listen as it stays true to the spirit of true/traditional heavy metal (it's as if this could be a blue-print on how to make a heavy metal album!) while never over-staying it's welcome or becoming Über-cheesy. Vocalist Hank Perry has a real eighties power-metal vibe going for him and I'm frankly amazed that this is his only recording as he handles cuts like "The Way You Lived" and "Killer" like a pro. Of course the guitar work of Felix and Bowman help a lot in making Omega Reign stand out (for the record the rhythm section is really good too) as the pair channel the metal gods (Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Scorpions, Megadeth and Anthrax) through-out "Arise". The Metallica-like "Invisible World / The Eidolon" is killer and "Doomsday", a heavy crunch of a rocker, reminded me somewhat of Ohio's cult-metal act Midevil. “This Poem is Goodbye” is probably the only toss-off as this ballad-like rocker kills what would otherwise be a stealer album. At least the slightly more rock oriented "Prison in Your Eyes", which sounds like a mash-up of Rainbow, Queensrÿche and early Megadeth to these ears, moves along without any real hang-ups. One track out of nine then is pretty solid making "Arise" a real treat for fans of hard & heavy, traditional heavy metal and US power metal (eighties-style!). A Sound of Thunder-Time's Arrow

Mad Neptune Records
2013

I'll apologize to fellow fans right now and right up front. You're going to hate me as A Sound of Thunder's third full-length album, "Time's Arrow", is epic and one of the BEST album's I've heard so far this year. Why would you hate me then? It's simple really as you'll have to wait to hear for yourself how killer this release is! I am so very sorry for that as you will be missing out what is some of Nina Osegueda's finest singing and Josh Schwartz's best guitar solos. A great example of this is on the track "I'll Walk With You". Nina's vocals seem to only get better with each new album and Josh has saved some his best licks for "Time's Arrow" by the sound of things! Of course it's not like drummer Chris Haren (who wrote the lyrics on "Time's Arrow") and bassist Jesse Keen don't get their chances to show off. In fact, incredible as this might sound, bassist Jesse Keen get's his first ever bass solo on "My Disease" and man, does he ever make the best of it! Why it's taken them this long to showcase his mad skills is a mystery to me. Anyway, while "My Disease", which features current Wolfsbane/ former Iron Maiden front-man Blaze Bayley doing a duet with Nina, might be one of the album's heaviest moments (it most certainly shows off the influence that Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden had on both artists careers respectfully) it's actually some of the album's more adventurous material I truly appreciated. "Reign of the Hawklords", the band's tribute to the one and only Hawkwind (for you young kids that Lemmy's old band), was available as a early download for those who ordered the "Queen of Hell" EP and is equally different and deliciously dangerous. Meanwhile you've got the bluesy "End of the Road" which seems to be more in tune with classic rock then classic metal. Both work and show that band's do not need to have cookie-cuter songs that all sound alike to be good. Of course record labels couldn't seem to grasp that (their loss!) so the band formed Mad Neptune Records to release their music their way. Of course the result speaks for itself! With this more "adventurous" metal does that mean the band has abandoned their roots? In short: HELL NO! "Broken Bridge" is traditional heavy metal in nature while "Wastelands", which pushes Nina's voice to extremes, flirts with American power metal. Again, these tracks showcase a band that has grown strong and more confident in their abilities. If they were not so well-versed in their craft it's doubtful they could pull off the nearly 10-minute title cut as well as they do. "Time's Arrow" (the song) actually began life back in 2008 as a home demo recording. Guitarist Schwartz would have to wait until all of the pieces were in order though before the band could undertake the songs dynamic and complex structure. It's not the only number that pulls out the Deep Purple card (see "Wastelands"), but it's the best example of how a band can take their influences, whether they be Black Sabbath/Iron Maiden or Deep Purple/Rush as in the case of A Sound of Thunder, and turn them into something compelling and unique. With it's multiple change-ups it's an epic number sure to please your discriminating progressive metal friends! Really though there is something here for everyone metal-wise and yet it all still sounds like A Sound of Thunder. While the album is not due out until June 4th (North America) the band will be releasing the single "I Will Not Break" in April to help tide fans over. "I Will Not Break" (which is loud, proud and in your face!) is what Halestorm would sound like if they were a true metal band. At a little under 4 minutes it's one of the album's shorter songs, but that allows the band to come in, make their point that this is how radio metal should sound like, and get out! If there's justice (doubtful) "I Will Not Break" would only serve to break this band into the mainstream. For now though their message will have to reach new listeners one metalhead at a time. Maybe it's better that way anyhow as A Sound of Thunder care more about their fans then fame. There are not a lot of groups you can say that about sadly. Anyway, the album is currently available for pre-order as both a standard edition (nice) and deluxe limited box set (VERY nice!) at the band's official store. While it might still be early in the year, and since there are a lot of good albums that are supposed to be coming down the line, I can guarantee you that "Time's Arrow" will make my best-of list for 2013! From the second that "Time's Arrow" kicks down the front door with the superb speed metal onslaught that is "Power Play" (a killer opener if ever there was one!) until it closes things up with the unique "Reign of the Hawklords" (you have to hear it for yourself to appreciate it's quirky nature!) the band never gives you reason to pause. Truly each track brings something different to the table which makes this album a sensational listen and a must-own. Highly recommended!

Salem (UK): X-Rated (Limited Edition EP) "Brofest 2013"

Self-Release/Independent
2013

Thanksgiving has either come really early for me or way to late. It just depends on how you look at it. Why, you may find yourself asking, are we talking about Thanksgiving in late March? Well, while I can't divulge all of the news and/or rumors that have found their way into my daily thoughts, as of late more and more cult eighties acts/N.W.O.B.H.M. acts have either released new music or are in the process of releasing new material. For me that's something to be VERY THANKFUL for! Or rather, this new music is something to keep this long winter (and it's every looming seasonal depression) we are having in check. All of that brings us to Salem. If you're already familiar with the band then you will know that they what I'm talking about when I say that they have always had the perfect blend of hard rock/traditional heavy metal and N.W.O.B.H.M.  If you're not familiar with the band then be sure to click on the link below where I have an interview with them as well as some reviews of their material. Beneath that you'll find all the other links you need to know when it comes to Salem and this new free digital EP. Yes, this new 4-track EP is free for the taking and, if you're   like me in anyway (in that you love great heavy metal), then just stop what you're doing and download this EP. Don't ask any questions. Just do it. You won't regret it. With "When Love's In Your Heart" setting the stage in true heavy metal fashion, followed by the ever so cool title cut, the band tears through 4 tracks of sensational hard rock/heavy metal. Lead singer Simon Saxby sounds better then ever. Truly, a track like "Ask The Lonely", showcases his youthful voice and shows that Salem still has what it takes to be a leading force in the field of British metal. The EP concludes with a re-recording of a song from 1982, "Reach To Eternity", and, if anything is wrong at all with this limited edition EP, you find yourself craving more! Paul Macnamara and Mark Allison offer up killer lead guitar solos to compliment Simon's youthful energy as Ade Jenkinson (bass) and Paul Mendham (drums) keep things solid in true rock steady fashion. Throughout this EP the band pulls out all the stops to give the listener four tracks of epic heavy metal that is both melodic and menacing. My only question to Salem now is this-when will we see another full-length album?

Alpha Tiger-Beanth the Surface

Century Media Records
2013

"Beneath the Surface" is not a album that I would have likely given a fair chance. As "Man or Machine", the band's 2011 debut, left a bitter taste in my mouth (it felt far too artificial for my tastes) I almost passed this one over. To be honest it's only because this album made it's way into my Rhapsody queue that I gave it a chance. I'll admit when I'm wrong and maybe, just maybe, I was wrong about Alpha Tiger. Time will truly tell if my initial call about this band will ultimately be right after a few more releases. For now, on album two,  the band has managed a  (seemingly) sincere release that loving takes the appeal of classic heavy metal and gives it an upgrade with a heavy dose of power metal. On the band's first album I got the sense that Alpha Tiger was flowing over with artificial additives that's only purpose was to mimic (better) retro-N.W.O.B.H.M. bands while sticker as close to formulaic heavy metal as they could get away with. Here the writing comes off as more sincere, the music is more technically sound and, yes, the emotion feels all the more "real". I'm sure some would disagree with me and say there was nothing wrong with the band's last release (especially as everyone seemed to rave about it), but it always felt lacking to me. This shows a different, more creative, side of the band as if they are getting more comfortable playing to their own strengths. I guess I'll have to start keeping an eye on these guys if they're going to go about proving me wrong with each new release.

Holy Grail-Ride The Void

Nuclear Blast
2013

In days of old I usually left Holy Grail for Metal Mark to cover. Whether it was the band's name (I liked their original name Sorcerer better) or their album's cover art so far (I hated the album art to the EP "Seasons Bleedings" and the single "Dark Passenger") I just wouldn't give this band a chance. What changed then? Well, first of all Metal Mark is covering all things sci-fi, horror and fantasy (at least film and TV wise) these days so he is a little busy. Speaking of which, if you haven't check out his other site then you are missing out! Drop what you are doing and pay him a visit. Of course you should finish reading this review first (LOL), but here's the link: http://scifihorrorfantasy.wordpress.com/   so go stop by and say hi to Metal Mark. Getting back to this album though and the second reason why I decided that I had to give it a shoot. Reviews. Yes, other reviews of this album. The latest issue of Metal Hammer has a lot of good things to say about this release it seemed and the more I dug about online the more I read some reviews of this album which were overwhelmingly positive. The final thing that did it for me was when I went back and decided to re-read Mark's review of the "Dark Passenger" single. He has this to say about the single "They dip into NWOBHM territory following the likes of Maiden and Diamond Head and combine with some heavier riffage." In a nutshell I trust Metal Mark's words so I decided to tackle this album for myself. If you don't know already this band was formed in 2008 by several former White Wizzard members. The story goes that just as White Wizzard was breaking out ("High Speed GTO" was as much a hit with the metal community as it was loathed by the metal community) they were breaking apart. Bassist Jon Leon dismissed the other 3 members of the band and decided to carry on White Wizzard with new members. The 3 former members meanwhile went on to form Holy Grail. To of those guys still remain in the Holy Grail line-up. Vocalist James-Paul Luna (who also played alongside Jon Leon in the band Jet Fuel) and drummer Tyler Meahl have proved that there is life beyond White Wizzard. Guitarist Alex Lee (formerly of Bonded By Blood), guitarist/vocalist Eli Santana and bass player Blake Mount fill out the line-up. Alex Lee is new to the band and shares lead guitar duties with Eli Santana. Those leads are what make "Ride The Void" such a good album. It's been three years between releases and the reality is "Ride The Void" is only the band's second full-length release. I can't say if 2010's "Crisis In Utopia" was any good or not as I've never heard it, but here at least the band plays to their strengths while backed by a superb production. Speaking of which, this was produced by Matt Hyde (Slayer, Children of Bodom), mixed by Mark Lewis (All That Remains, Trivium) with mastering done by Alan Douches (Baroness, Firewind, Mastodon). The three of them have helped Holy Grail achieve that perfect sound. Back to what makes this album tick (or rather shred!) and it has to be noted just how good the two guitarists are together. Like I said those leads are nothing short of sweet! They are definitely from the Iron Maiden twin-guitar school of thought while this young band also seems to nod their head (or thrash their heads!) in appreciation towards the likes of Dio and Judas Priest. If you think this is just more retro-metal worship though (like their previous band White Wizzard) it's far from it. These guys come to the party ready to thrash!  If anything I find Holy Grail's new album to be better then anything White Wizzard every put out! You could call this thrash inspired by classic metal and N.W.O.B.H.M. if you like. Maybe that description might be meet with some skepticism. I'd understand that. Any band that was formed by ex-White Wizzard members (who are then said to be inspired equally by Iron Maiden and Metallica) that is described as classic heavy metal meets classic thrash would make me pause to question such a claim. While certainly not as classic as either (or at least Iron Maiden and early Metallica) these guys are on their way to be one monster of a band. With two great lead guitarists and a rhythm section that is simply crushing you have a winner right there. But then you go and add this excellent lead vocalist who knows how to hit all the right notes. What does that add up to? Right there is enough for me to say there is no telling how far Holy Grail could go. These guys have broke away from the retro-this or retro-that crowd and instead have forged their own identity from the ground up. "Ride The Void" is the sound of a band that gets it. And this is just the band's  sophomore album! How scary is that?

Amon-Ra-In The Company Of Gods

Pure Underground Records
2013

Like the bulk of material being released by our friends over at Pure Steel Promotion this is a re-release of a long-lost album. In this case it's Amon-Ra's sole album and it is going to be issued in a limited-run, vinyl format with 4 bonus-cuts. "In The Company Of Gods" was originally released back in 1992 on CD and still shows up for sale on Ebay. Now, because it featured Sacred Heart's Byron Nemeth I had high hopes for this album. Given that they also hailed from Cleveland, Ohio (and were purported to be this exceptionally talented traditional heavy metal/power metal/progressive metal outfit), had a novelty Egyptian theme, and featured member's of fellow-Cleveland power/thrash act Ground Zero (in this case Ken and Kris Dugan) all signs pointed toward a hidden gem. There is just one problem with Amon-Ra though. In a nutshell Dan Mattingly is not a very good singer. Even if musically this is only so-so to begin with (half of it sounds really inspired while the other half sounds hastily assembled) that could be overlooked. You can't overlook a bad lead singer though. His range is limited and, to be frank, his vocal style is rather monotonous. If you can look past that then you will want to scoop this up quick as there will be just 333 copies. If you are like me and bad vocals can ruin a good album then you should pass on this U.S. metal act. It's as simple as that. I wanted so bad to like this album, but it just doesn't cut it.

A Sound of Thunder-Queen of Hell EP

Self-Release
2013

My first exposure to U.S. metal act A Sound Of Thunder came courtesy of  "Out Of The Darkness", the band's second full-length album. Since "Out Of The Darkness" made my best-off list for 2012 it's safe to say the album had an impact on me. The truth is it inspired me enough to want to help out the band with their Kickstarter campaign to fund 2013's forthcoming "Time's Arrow" release. This four-track EP serves as a preview of things to come from A Sound Of Thunder. It's also a sign that the band is getting better with each new release. Up front I'm just going to say it: this EP is an instant classic. If  "Time's Arrow" carries the same high-level of energy (and since tracking for both albums took place at the same time there's no reason to think otherwise) it's going to be one hell of a year to be a heavy metal fan! As far as heavy metal releases is concerned this EP alone is golden. "Time's Arrow" is one of 2013's album I'm stoked to hear! That said let's get back to the forceful impact this EP should have on the heavy metal community right now. If you could give only one selling point for the "Queen of Hell" EP it would have to be the vocals of Nina Osegueda. Nina's been described as "the love child of Rob Halford and Bruce Dickinson...", but even that description fails to fully describe just how good she is. The opening title cut might show of her power, but it's "Hello Nurse" that really shows the full range of Nina Osegueda. This oddly fascinating (and yet extremely cool) number has a charm all it's own as it casually strolls about in the garden of Alice Cooper's mind. As the song opens with American-style power metal  you can't help but get a strong sense of fellow U.S. metal act Lizzy Borden's potential influence. That's of course before "Hello Nurse" turns into a classic rock number accented with a Billy Joel-like piano solo! It's a startling twist that shows how A Sound Of Thunder are not afraid to take risks with their music. Here the risk pays off in a big way as "Hello Nurse" is a fun and memorable number that will stick around in your heard long after the song's over. Now, as the band wanted the same producer and studio that they used for "Out of the Darkness",  Kevin '131' Gutierrez (Shinedown, While Heaven Wept, Raven) was once again enlisted and production took place again at Assembly Line Studios in Vienna, Virginia. In regards to that, guitarist Josh SchwartzI said that part of the reason they wanted the same producer and studio was so that they could think of the last album and the new material as their own version of "Blizzard of Ozz" and "Diary of a Madman" (as the guitarist rightly points out about the two albums "...they go hand in hand,"-not only chronologically, but vibe-wise). Speaking of all things Ozzy, while guitarist Schwartz was working with Kevin Gutierrez again the pair bounded over their shared appreciation for the Black Sabbath album "Born Again". That would lead to the EP's one cover track. While A Sound Of Thunder usually shy away from covers (as they would prefer to let their own music doing the talking) "Queen of Hell" features a choice cover of  Black Sabbath's "Born Again" number, "Trashed". With "Trashed" guitarist Josh Schwartz gets a chance to fully showcase his skills. His lead work is insane on "Trashed" just as it is on the EP as a whole. You can't just forget about the rhythm section of Jesse Keen and Chris Haren (bass and drums respectively) though. Not only does this pair offer the perfect background for Nina and Josh to feed off of, but when given the chance to shine both musicians are at the top of their game. All four members of A Sound of Thunder manage to work together in perfect form on "Queen of Hell". As if the title cut (which is a nice slab of American heavy metal), "Trashed" and "Hello Nurse" were not enough reason to love this EP you also get a duet version of "Queen of Hell" that features guest vocals by Benedictum's Veronica Freeman. And hell yeah!, it's every bit as good as you'd expect giving that level of talent. It's cool hearing two of metal's unheralded female vocalists tearing it up together and it's hard to pick one version of the song over the other as both versions are killer. Both vocalists are unjustly left out in the dark when talks turn to the best lead singers in metal (female or not!) which is messed up if you really think about it. Anyway, A Sound of Thunder will be touring behind this EP here in the US in early 2013. That will be followed later on in 2013 by a more extensive tour to promote "Time's Arrow". Among the dates currently scheduled is one with Doro and Sister Sin. Now that is a show I'd love to see! Hopefully their tour includes stops in my part of Ohio (or Ohio in general) . If they play nearby then by all means be sure to catch A Sound of Thunder live. Also, if you love good traditional heavy metal/American power metal then be sure to pick up the "Queen of Hell" EP. Speaking of which, rather then re-type everything I'll just give you the scoop straight from the band as far as what's available. Some items are insanely limited in quantity and sure to be future collector's items so get them while you can!

Attic-The Invocation

Ván Records
2012

For a band that was formed back in 2010 (over a shared interest in such things as sinister music, spiritualism. occultism, horror movies and literature) Germany's traditional heavy metal act, Attic, sure has managed to get a lot done a lot in just this past year alone. As if having issued a self-released/self-titled EP and a split 7” with Walpurgis Night already in 2012 wasn't enough now the band is looking to add credit to their name with this full-length LP. Obviously the group has had a busy 2012, and no doubt they spent the first two years of existence honing their skills, but how does the band's full length album ,"The Invocation", really hold up to inspection? Well, there is such a thing as paying homage to your inspirations in the music you play verses being a all out a carbon copy. Attic find themselves walking the line between those two descriptions and I can't help but wonder if  "The Imitation" wouldn't have been a better title? Merciful Fate and Judas Priest fans would do well to listen up to this next part as those are the two main targets of Attic's affection. While lead vocalist Meister Cagliostro comes off as more Rob Halford then King Diamond the music is clearing a combination of those two classic bands. While Helstar and Pentagram are also mentioned in the promo as possible front runners to Attic's sound this is the result of Merciful Fate and Judas Priest coming together for a collaboration. That about sums up Attic. If your a fan of either or both of those acts then "The Invocation" should be on your Christmas wish list. Even if the band sounds a little too much like their heroes for my tastes I will say though that everything from the song-writing to the performances is spot-on. The band is no doubt a talented bunch of guys who know how to write darkly-tinted classic metal. The production is just about perfect as well and you can't help but appreciate the old school cover artwork by Markus Vesper (Manilla Road, A Tortured Soul, Poison Oath, Headless Beast). But, it's not the most original idea in the book when it comes to traditional heavy metal bands out there so it comes down to what your looking for metal-wise. If you can look past the minor flaw in their music then by all means go for it!
